You know you've arrived if Sarah Vaughan sings even one of your songs.

The interval at 2:19 shattered my soul. Who even thinks like that?!?!?! She's my idol. I will forever be inspired by her in her entirety.

I love Ella to no end, but have to admit that Sarah was the queen.

Ultimately Ella is more talented, she can do more musically complicated things. But Sarah is very close, and has that incredible sound

@@theblueangel28Ella is certainly more accomplished and has a broader ability. That said, Sarah could hit operatic notes outside of Ella's range. As you implied, both were spectacular talents. I think there's some space between them and the rest.

@@terrybader8595 Yes, I think you're both right. They were both brilliant singers but they had somewhat different instruments. I think Sarah was fuller in the extremes of her register (especially high), but Ella was an elegant stylist who could inhabit a song deeply and pull you in (as in her ballads in the songbooks).When Sarah sings "I'll Close My Eyes," I am transported; when Ella sings "How Long Has This Been Going On," Im transported. They're just different modes of transportation, but both excellent.

Well put, @Branner. I listen to Ella all of the time. She's a nightingale and the undisputed queen of the American songbook. Sarah does have the ability to do things with her voice that are breathtaking. There are some great videos on KZread with professional music teachers critiquing Sarah. Almost all of them are astounded by her.

At least 60,000 of these views are mine alone!! I can't stop myself from comiing back to this song!!!

The lady was one of the great artists of the 20th century.

Exactly ! I was thinking it's something that she launches in the universe, it's like that sound would travel somewhere else.... Pure art !!!

Her voice is truly an instrument....incredible pitch and range...your ears can't believe what you are hearing at certain points.

The ending was so superb, holding that note so tenderly it was sublime! She is the best, but I also like Mary Wells' rendition even though Sarah takes the prize.

Incredible last note...and she still had air for more.

I agree I have so much respect for her. I am a singer, and I mean this women was way more then a vocalist she was an instrument, she was down with the sexy baritone lines, then alto to mezzo soprano, she was just just one of a kind, one of the coolest things about the Divine Sarah, was even in her old age she never lost the power of her voice even when sick, she just stayed in insturment and always just perfectly in tune just a beautiful voice!! Sorry I am just amazed by her could really just ramble on :D!!

Me too ! She speaks to ,y soul. There are so many great female singers but the divine one is like no other

OMG--that entire song seems to float on one long,silken breath. Just awesome. And listen to the lower range--basso profundo! Staggering. But the final note just floats on forever. This is kick-ass singing!

Festivals 1969 looks pretty crazy exciting time. Thelonious Monk , Sarah Vaughan... That generation that lived through early 70's somehow comes across as the most respectful and sociable people at the least for today's standards.

I've only had one occasion to see Sarah perform in Detroit. Outstanding performance here and the trio is tight as hell. Finally able to purchase this song online and add it to my playlist at #1. So incredible that she holds that last note for damn near 20 seconds. From high to subtle low. No artists alive or gone, can do it like Sarah!

her approach to this song was so great .....the ending was so classic Sarah too....hit em with a HIGH NOTE

So gorgeous. I think her voice got better as she aged, you can’t say that for too many. Sarah is and always will be Divine

I was so moved by Sarah's beautiful rendition of this song.

This is truly the Queen of jazz vocals. And I love her!!! So much heart and soul in her voice. I tear up every time I hear her sing. My mothers boyfriend introduced me to her music when I was 12 years old in 1961. I am a fan forever. Bow down to this Queen! There will never be another sassy Sarah.

This was a wonderful trio for her and she sounded sublime with them. You could tell they were in synch with each other. They knew how to play for her. They left it open for her to just sing. What a great loss for the world when Sarah's voice was stilled. She sings with the angels now. I bet she sings lead!

It’s always interesting to google jazz musicians who weren’t necessarily famous but were very talented and managed to play with some heavyweights and make a living.
