PLEASE LET ME HELP YOU teach all musicians how to make an EASY living with GOOD CASH, and no middlemen or hassles. EX: no smart musician plays venues, as you are AT THE MERCY of skeevy people and it's illogical to make the audience come to you. (You play OUTDOORS and go to the public. Ask for more details.) (Look up FRIENDS FOREVER from Colorado [RIP] who toured america and played out of... their van!) EX: THE MOST IMPORTANT DECISION A BAND WILL EVER MAKE? THE NAME OF THEIR BAND. (Imagine a restaurant called "Puke and Diarrhea" and you get the idea.) WHEN LED ZEPPELIN CAME OUT, they were mocked as a total rip-off of THE JEFF BECK GROUP. GUESS WHICH BAND WON. GUESS WHY. (BOTH had a Yardbirds guitar legend and an iconic singer! JBG had a 20 year old... ROD STEWART!! So WHY did they fail? Because "LED ZEPPELIN" is much cooler than "JEFF BECK GROUP" (ZZZZZZ)) SARAH IS SUGGESTING THE SAME PATH THAT A ZILLION BANDS TRIED. IT'S NOT EFFICIENT. IT'S NOT SMART. WHY would you waste time with a booking agent? I've toured the world effortlessly and profitably over and over. Didn't book even ONE show! Didn't have to deal with plane tix etc. THERE ARE MUCH SMARTER WAYS than the "conventional wisdom". LET ME HELP SHARE MY SECRETS!

FESTIVALS ARE DUMB AND HORRIFIC. BETTER IDEA: shows in local clubs where it's 20 BANDS in one day (saturday). No one needs to make money by charging a high fee, b/c it's about NETWORKING / COMMUNITY. (Then, if your band rises above, ppl will buy your merch and CD.) $5 or pay what you want admission. Young people are STARVED for culture / adventure. MAKE IT EASY FOR THEM.

My perception, as a child of the 90s where there wasn't the constant fan/artist interaction of now, is that if an artist goes silent for a while is that they haven't given up, binned it etc. Just that they're off workshopping something new.

btw, the reason the concerts were so awesome in the day is that those concerts was the ONLY exposure to our favorite bands so when they came to town, it was HUGE. there were trade rags and LP's/CD's and that is it. A live album was as awesome as a studio album. Now> I just watched many hours of Coachella and I watch new music videos non-stop. So ya, the internet has destroyed the old mystique of the "concert". I am so glad I got to see the old bands in big arenas and the party in the parking lot before and after and just the craziness of rock'n'roll before the ultra PC police state happened (70's and 80's). I have no motivation to see shows any longer.

This is saddening. I personally don’t know this musician but I know many talented musicians and I am a player too and the fact that an act would make a band “buy on” to a tour is repugnant . If I had tickets to an act and found out that the headliners practiced this, I would not attend. The music industry has consumed itself and left talent, thoughtful artists on the curb side.

I recently quit and haven’t touched my guitar in about a year and a half. Im in a point now in my life where I need a career. Ever since I quit there has been a huge void and I have nothing because I identified with music so much. Hoping to get back out on stage one day.

If you are using a promoter they get the merch cut not the the venue. In their eyes the promoter is paying to rent the place. So they want a portion of your sales to make up for the area you occupy that could have been used to put more fans in or rent to a vendor. Its all about the money. Your negotiation skills will get you where you want. Good luck. Awesome interview.

Really good video and insights. I hate to add more pressure, but ... Being a creative at Sarah's level is a foreign process to most humans. We are often more task oriented and our stream of consciousness is directed by a project or other folks. So, with the 'Net we can try to look into the creative process a bit, and often be amazed at how it works... The extra pressure I refer to is seeing creatives collaborate on a project. That chemistry is double unique. Each creative and the synergy. I hope to see more of Sarah and maybe her collaborating to do another of her ethereal pieces :) Any look at how it works and what comes from seemingly almost nothing is joy to behold. Keep on keepin on !!!

Liked Sarah's perspective on how it'd be better if musicians worked together. Because it is really crazy how pretty much everyone but the musicians profit the most from the music they make and it's sorta always been that way that labels, venues and now Spotify take such a huge cut from the money that's being made. Musicians should really work together and scandalize this or protest/strike together to finally demand a fair pay for their work. I mean the venues are only able to make their money because musicians work hard on their songs and bring people to the venue. Though it's kind of hard to make a strike when you depend on the money. There should be something like a union for musicians where they can organize and strike for better regulation of this stuff so they don't get exploited as much as they do..

I played full time for ten years in a a few DC bands. Made a decent living. No real touring but we would play hundreds of miles away but most of the far away gigs were resort gigs that you played the same room for two weeks often for the same people. The good part was one set-up one tear-down one free meal per day, three free drinks and the pay was pretty good. It did make me ka-rayzee.

Great interview! The number #1 thing that kills the music industry is no longer artist development. The Industry wants bands prepacked with a #1 hit ready to go before they'll sign them, and then the label wants the bands to sign a 360 deal. When before they would let an artist grow. Prince for example took a couple of failing albums before he hit big.

NOW, I have to listen to Bon Jovi every hour (!) and other TOOTHLESS bands, b/c the GOP HAS WANTED TO STOP ROCK MUSIC SINCE IT BEGAN (b/c it made kids hate religion and authority). NOW, the MSM forces SPORTS down our throats and don't cover MUSIC, b/c SPORTS teaches OBEDIENCE TO RULES AND AUTHORITY, while music does the opposite. I've been a musician since the 80's, doing industrial music and experimental music/sound collage and all kind of tape music, experimental music, and guitar music. In all these years, I've never once published my work, shared my work, or posted my stuff online. I've built up this huge mass of just.. personal recordings, just for myself (I'm really the only one I know who enjoys the kind of music I make) over the years in boxes of tape cassettes. Now I'm getting older. My equipment is showing it's age, a lot of it is breaking down and I can't afford to repair most of it, and even the tape players needed to play my tape recordings are breaking down. My 20 year old Tascam multitrack recorder finally bit the dust and actually caught fire last month when I turned it on, haha! I have a couple of synths that need to go to the shop for repairs now because they're old and started malfunctioning. Slowly, I've been losing my hobby because all my hardware that I've relied on all these years just... is getting old and I can't afford to replace or repair stuff now. I'm not a teenager any more and there's just too many other bills. Being a musician, unfortunately is expensive.

Dont loose your music ,its part of you. Find a way to transfer it to digital/mp3 and put it on youtube. At least "ITS OUT THERE", for people to listen or just for you as an archive. My equipment is failling too after a while, you think the preamp trim-pot doesn't work anymore until you wiggle it about 30 times and find out it was just dirty from not using it for many years lol what i dont need anymore , i'm selling

@@bethoveen3 Yeah. My Yamaha DX7 for some reason keeps switching to patch 8 and patch 13 all by itself. ALL the pots are scratchy on my Sequential Circuits Split 8 and my amp. My SY35, the volume is entirely scratchy. My old Tascam multitrack recorder that I used to use as a mixer caught fire last month, haha (you couldn't imagine what that made the room smell like. Even when I unplugged it, it wouldn't stop producing smoke and I had to put it outside. The thing was smoking for a good 15 minutes or so. I have no clue what went on that thing... but MAN did it stink... and the room just smelled like burning...whatever it was that was burning in it for days after, no matter how I cleaned the desktop where it was and no matter how much Fabreez I used.). My only tape player also decided to crap out as well. It made a loud "POP!* and now only makes clicking sounds. I'm going to be opening that one up to see if it's anything I can fix. I think the thing that impacted me most was that mixer fire. It surprised the hell out of me. I was NOT expecting THAT to happen.

@@bethoveen3 Well I replaced it with a modern Mackie mixer. Hopefully, they don't have the same type of mechanism installed. Haha!

I don't get into the gender equality issue but she doesn't use her identity to get anywhere. She does her homework of being an artist and being humble about. That's a mind of a leading woman. Very down to earth

Ok 250 comments it's possible to read them all... I don't know what to write... Tomorrow comes my Sarah Longfield Vinyl and it will get the special place over my record player, because it has a beautiful Cover. 😁

This video needs more views. It’s so sad to see that the people who are supposed to drive the industry are getting screwed over the worst. I would like to be a touring musician but this video makes my dream so discouraging to carry out. It seemed so much easier back then to be a touring artist but it seems like you have to be a generic rap artist to make it by. Please someone fix this industry haha.

BINGO!! MY PROFIT MARGINS are FAR superior to Taylor Swift or U2. NO Pro act is SMART or logical or efficient. WHEN U2 MAKES A BILLION ON TOUR... everyone forgets their EXPENSES are $999,999,999! Busking is THE greatest thing ever. (Too bad the word "busk" is horrible!) I take my guitar, one Boss pedal, and battery amp and go out and practice and strangers throw money at me! (It helps that I'm not doing anything ORDINARY, like singing folk songs.)
