Ms. Jarosz tends to end up owning the songs of others she covers. I’m sure this made Tom Waits smile from ear to ear.

It was wonderful how the all the parishioners jump in at 4:46. I still love Austin, even though it's been over thirty years since I've seen the old gal.

Come down off the cross we could use the wood........ Probably one of the greatest lines I have ever heard in a song.....but there is one problem. We are dealing with the genius that is Tom Waites and he must have at least one thousand other lines to dispute my choice. For example in this song alone there is; if you've been whipped by the forces inside of you the only things you can see is what you lack.. you know you should surrender but you can't let go the world is not my house I'm just a passing through life is nasty, brutish and short...which is originally from the English philospher Thomas Hobbes 1588-1679 and this line is sampled (not plagiarised) from Leviathan his most famous work. Although I belong to the Church of the Open Minded Tom Waites Society, Sara does a brilliant job of the song.

I don't remember where I got this copy, but someone commented on a version I shot at a festival in 2017 asking if anyone knew what happened to the ACL version. Strangely ACL posted songs on KZread that didn't air on the broadcast, but not those that did. It felt great to be able to give the commenter what they wanted immediately. I'll search for other songs from that show and post any others that are missing in the next day or two.

The purpose of a cover is to be good, and different. Better happens sometimes but is not the point. Having an opinion is fine, saying no one else's opinion is valid, is not so fine.
