I love all your videos but this one hands down is my favorite!!! The production value, calming voice, education factor and your humor shines brightly and continously for 29 min straight with no edits. I love Santa Maria Novella. I just discovered them last year, and have bought 3 so far. Pot Pourri is so good - I love it after shower or in warm weather. It ended up being one of my most worn perfumes. It smells so natural - like aromatherapy or a spa.

Hi JJ. This video was so enjoyable. I've been intrigued by the perfumes of this house. The music you've chosen is so evocative, including your featured vocal. Your descriptions of these fragrances are loaded with fun imagery, your words conjure up the experience. Garofano sounds like my dream fragrance... Yikes, now out of production. Great video and very informative as always. Only one from the house that I own is Tobacco Toscano, which I really enjoy but sadly you don't have it. Was hoping to get your take on it. Keep up the good work and a hi from across the pond in England.

Ahhh yes, that may seem a glaring omission. I do like Tobacco Toscano, but I wasn't compelled to go full bottle. It's elegantly sweet and aromatic, but between choosing that and Acqua di Cuba, the latter was the clear winner. I have to draw the line somewhere!

Hello from your newest subscriber. Love the history, have visited the shop in Firenze often. Love the original Rose and the Carnation, most modern perfumers cant handle those two mega hitters.

JJ, this was poetic, knowledgeable and oh so genuine. I’ve come here after the fact, having been lucky enough to visit the SMN HQ in Florence this month. I picked up Cala Rossa (a wonderful green scent of theirs from 2014) as we head into the Australian summer. If you haven’t had that trip to Florence yet, you’ll love the setup at SMN. We stayed for about an hour (the lineup was out the door to begin with), as the rooms full of interactives, soaps, incenses, candles and lastly perfumes are well worth the visit. The perfume counter seems to have about 25 to choose from. The hardest part is making up your mind which to go with. Thanks for the great video.

I want to thank you for the bottom of my heart. It means a great deal to me. I would love to visit Florence one day in the not so distant future. The New Years' resolution. Less perfume buying, more traveling! It would be dream to visit SMN in Florence. Stay tuned-my first video in five months is coming up in the next week or so!

Great reviews on those great fragrances by Santa Maria Novella, JJ. I happen to have six of the fragrances you have reviewed and totally agree with what you have said. The Santa Maria Novella stores in Hong Kong were closed few years ago and they just reopened a new one last October. I must go see if they still have Acqua di Cuba as the brand had already pulled out of Hong Kong when I was planning to get it then.

So nice to see some of the less well known SMN fragrances discussed. I missed out not sampling that Marsiciella and Fieno. I use the Potpourri when I pack away my wool coats and they smell so good when I bring them out again. The fragrance smells exactly like their famous potpourri. I was able to get my nose on this line in Miami, but there are so many I couldn't test them all. I came home with Lana and Rosa Novella. I look forward to going back to Miami and testing more. With your taste for the more unusual I think you would like Oriza L Legrande's Chypre Mousse. Great review!!

You have a very nice SMN collection! And I love the ordering by color. I haven’t tried Acqua di Cuba, Ginestra and Garafono. There is SMN counter at department store in Stockholm, but there are only about ten fragrances. One that they have and which I’m considering buying is Sandalo. Have you tried that one? I think rosewood is the most prominent note. I take a sniff almost everytime I go to the city (I will probably do it today)

I recently ordered some SMN samples. I wanted to try the new L'Iris and the Bizarria mostly, but added a few other samples (Violette, Vanilgia, Zagara, and Caprifoglio). Last minute I remembered the Marescialla you talked about. Well, that is the one I am ordering the full bottle of despite you mentioning dank, medicinal herbs, astringent, etc. I will request a sample of Fieno when I place my order.

@@JJColb I bought the sampler set from SMN in Miami. It is just their more bestselling 'mainstream' scents, but a good starting point. I purchased my samples this time from Aedes in NY, that was the only place I could find the new 4 Eau de Parfum garden scents.

Lovely review, I have to try SMN, sound very much up my alley, overgrown with weeds. Rumor is that Acqua di Cuba is discontinued now as well. Do you know how the SMN Garofano compares to Villoresi's?

I heard! What a shame. I love Lorenzo Villoresi's Garofano as well. That one is far more shadowy, almost mushroomy, more of a moody garofano.

I just visited the Florence SMN shop yesterday, and it's beautiful inside. I think you'd love it, and if they offer tours or something you should try taking one. I bought marescialla, its one of my very favorite from the house. And idk why but it smells like a more classic resinous medicinal version of enigma from roja dove. What i mean by this is, that it has this "cola" ish feel to it, that i can't really describe, and the people at SMN were looking at me like I'm a little wild hahahaha but that's what I think about. While it still being absolutely its own beast. Timeless. As far as eau de cologne fragrances go, i think SMN over delivers in quality and strength! I think garofano isn't discontinued..? I swear it's still there at that store... I could be wrong. Carnation in fragrance is so underrated! I believe myths man from Amouage has carnation in it too, but it's definitely the most somber fragrance i think I've ever felt in my life. I know i gotta own it someday.

@@JJColb you should if you really love the house. Fragrance is like an essential part of the french and Italian ways of life for sure at this point.

All of the fragrances you mentioned are outstanding, in terms of smell. Unfortunately, I never bought anything from this house due to the excessively high price for an EDC. I suggest you to btry Garofano from Villoresi: a true beast in terms of quality and performance.

I find that most of the EDCs in the SMN house do not "perform" as one would expect from an EDC. I will be featuring Villoresi's Garofano in my house profile for Lorenzo Villoresi.

I think SMN's EDCs perform just as well as EDTs from other brands like Diptyque. I have Citta di Kyoto and Cinquanta and get a good 6-7 hours of wear from them.

That would depend on the age of the bottle in question. My bottle is about three years old and smelled no different from a sample of an older gold-label version.
