this is jose (aka pepe in Mexico). Originally from Cuba,he's a dive instructor in Akumal now and is fine with a hard core scar on his arm. I just met him and he was my dive instructor last week. An extremely nice and humble man and as others have written readily admits it was a stupid move. He's fine and an incredible instructor.

Is his nickname Lefty? Just kidding. Respect to title calling it accident instead of attack. & respect for this man who clearly has nerves of steel. Anyone who can remain that calm in this situation is obviously an excellent instructor who thinks about others before himself. We all make mistakes but how we react to them is what separates ppl. Impressive.

Thousands of dives and I have never tried to “play” with shark. Observed them from a distance. Respect them but not encourage or attract them in any way. Play with fire and you get burned. My hats off to the guy for not shooting to the surface. He stayed calm and came up “reasonable” slow. Obviously he had some depth there.

Exactly what I thought. "Calling" them in like that means they'll be aggressive when they arrive. His presence of mind to surface slowly is pretty amazing considering the fear, pain and blood in the water.

Wife and I did this dive at the same location back in 2000. 90 feet down at the mouth of a river and waited 25 minutes until the Bull sharks arrived, 3 of them. I always remember this big British guy with his fancy camera wanting to get that perfect shot. So he decides to move beside one of the Cuban divers who was feeding the sharks. Well the shark came in and was more interested in the guys camera. The shark started to push the camera with his nose, buddy is trying to swim backwards, drops the camera and punches the shark on the nose which sent it back into the murky water. Another group came down and we had about 30 divers on the sea bed to watch the show. I remember we got into a decompression dive towards the end and had to hang on to this concrete platform at 10 feet and decompress for 15-20 minutes before surfacing. Quite a few people had run out of air and had to surface early. I remember being down to 150PSI. Just made it. All in all it was an experience, a very expensive one which included a 3 hour bus ride to this site and the shits on the way back. You can't leave ham sandwiches out all night. The Cubans thought you could.

Jose was possibly Cuba's best diver and has a great deal of respect and love for the sharks. He acknowledged that this was his mistake not the shark's. He has more guts than the arm chair critics who condemn him or think that this video was funny. He also had the presence of mind to make a safe ascent and keep the others away from him while he did. Before he moved to Mexico, I saw him and he was bearing a pretty horrific scar but no ill will to the shark.

@PigsCanFly99 I was diving at this very same site twice. It's a wreck near 3 all-inclusive resorts and there are bullsharks at 25 meters deep. You will descent near the shore while following a slope. On both occasions my Suunto computer told me that I had exceeded no-deco limits. I didn't like it at all as water temperature was only 24 celcius so I was freezing but had to observe decompression times. At that point I didn´t care about the sharks anymore, I just wanted to get out.

You have to try really hard to even view these large animals. I've dove with the bull sharks - lemons- blues- greys off Jupiter, FL and the only reason they showed up was because they've been trained by our instructor when called for their sushi chum line. This experience only helped to learn that you have absolutely need to fear them. Just don't make any loud noises (with your body movements) and they will ignore you. The trick is to just move calmly and relaxingly and you're practically invisible to them. If you leave them alone , they leave you alone. If you splash around on the surface like a wounded seal, then a shark still won't even eat you, because you taste WRONG. If you try to reach out to touch them.... or chase any ocean critter then, it's just a matter of time, someday Nemo might be aggressive right back at you. I've dove a lot and only viewed one beautiful 6 ft shark in hawaii while free diving. He was far away.

The victim being an instructor, he seemed to be in control and nowhere near panicking. In fact he even seems to be making his safety stop and he gives an OK sign at 2:40. Those Cuban divemasters/instructors dive everyday 2-3 dives a day, takes a lot to get them anywhere near panic.

@Topesio66 It wasn't a reefshark but a bullshark. I was diving at that location in january and the smallest one was over 2 metres. The biggest one exceeded 3 metres! Bulls can be very dangerous but what surprised me: once the divemaster stopped feeding them the sharks were no longer interested in the divers. They didn't become pushy but actually continued to keep a distance from us. They are being fed for over 10 years but are nevertheless still wild animals and mostly shy for people.

There is a lot wrong with the decisions this guy makes. As a general practice, it is a bad idea to feed sharks because if it happens at the same locations for long enough, a feeding expectation starts to brew. This is bad for other divers. If you are going to feed sharks, try hard to have some sort of extension to hold the bait. This leaves you room for error. Lastly, don't yank the bait away as he does at 1.21. This makes the shark think the prey is fleeing.

Sorry, scubadvd. There was no safety stop made. The general practice is to do a safety stop of 3 minutes at roughly 5 meters. Given that the clip is itself only three minutes long, we can see no such safety stop happened. The beeping you are hearing is his comp telling him he is ascending too quickly and ignoring the safety stop. They don't appear to be too deep however, and given the circumstances a rapid ascent is warranted. They seem to be at least keeping to a slow speed than the bubbles.

good judgment comes from experience, experience from poor judgment...if someone is truly responsible and not reckless, they don't hand feed large predators. If he had been more respectful, it would not have had to be.

blood looks so cool at that depth, being all green like that. As for the diver.....lesson learned. He got away lucky too. He could have lost his hand or arm! No surprise, you can here his dive comp beeping to slow his ascent rate.

So this video is pretty much ancient now, but all I can really say is god damn. I know that for the most part sharks don't want or like the we taste. So most bites are from shark curiosity or human error or a little of both. Looked to me as the shark just had a quick turn into that frenzy mode they have cause it didn't really look to want your buddies arm. I believe those were bull sharks which are particularly aggressive so I'm pretty sure if it decided it was gonna eat more it would have. Especially since for the most part y'all surfaced a little fast for scuba, but y'all seem to still keep calm.

Susky, they weren't really to deep, so in that case a 3 min safety stop is not necessarily. And after all, if u get bitten by a shark and are bleeding alot, I think u wanna get back to the surface as fast as possible, even if its dangerous...

Imagine seeing a bullshark and thinking, "Im gonna just fuck with it and it's food." There is an aquarium in my hometown that prides itself on having more bullsharks than anywhere else and they have an annual drawing where scuba divers can be chosen to dive in the tank. Because being the only new thing to enter a tank of aggressive sharks that are otherwise void of all stimulus and anything to be curious about seems like a good idea to some people.

Looks like a mistaken shark bite.....thought the arm was part of the fish offering. Just shows you the power of these sharks and the razer like sharpness of their teeth. Then again you must be very careful feeding these predators. Things can get ugly quickly.
