    I try not to pick sides but the reason why I decided to go with the LT mostly is because I was able to get a better price on it. That being said the things that I appreciate the most is the ease of maintenance on the bike, efficiency, and the stiffness. Both bikes will be solid all around bikes but the Santa Cruz just makes owning the bike a little easier.

    Great review. Thank you! Have now taken both on apples-to-apples demo rides near Boulder, Co and in Moab, UT. For me, the Yeti feels faster and more confident on the downhill, especially on big descents where accuracy was required over one set of obstacles to set up for the next. I think the Santa Cruz climbs steeper pitches better but agree that the technical uphill was slightly better on the Yeti. Now to decide on the build spec - Leaning toward the GX Eagle. It seems like a nice balance of price to performance/weight. BTW, the maintenance insight was really valuable - thanks for adding that.

    Thank you! Ya comparing both in stock configurations I would agree as I said that the 5.5 has more downhill prowess. It would take some part swapping to get the LT as comfortable but its not too far behind. The GX eagle is also a great build. You get the X01 derailleur and you could easily sell the GX cranks and drop weight getting the X01 Cranks. Not needed but an option. Enjoy the bike!

    You give as much thought, care and special attention to your video's as you did in choosing your name (Bikeariously)! Brilliant on that one! Thanks for the great camera angles and vid segments to mate up with your explanations in real time. Also the longer action segments to visually cue those sections and bike reactions to what you are riding /explaining. Nice insight technically between the 2 steeds (maintenance, warranty, bearings etc.). That stuff is really important. I am in the market for a new bike to replace my 8 year old EX-9 and appreciate the time and effort you put in to your eval's. I just demo'd an IBIS Ripley LS 2018 and was hoping to find your comparo to the HIghtower LS. Have you done one (I will search) but if not, curious as I found that bike to be amazing. The Transition Smug/Sent are in the running as is the Hightower LS. Have not ridden those 3.

    Hey thank you for the kind words! I really wanted to bring an attention to detail to bike reviews I haven't been able find myself. I don't have a comparison video yet between the LT and the Ripley as they to me are in separate categories. Since you asked though it makes me wonder though who else is wondering the same thing so that is something for me to consider. Ill give you a brief insight to the LT and LS. The Ripley will out climb the Hightower LT everywhere. Efficiency, suspension response and technical climbing ability will all go to the Ripley. The DW design coupled with the less travel makes this happen. So if climbing is a priority the Ripley LS will be the bike you want. That being said the LT climbs very well itself given that it has 150mm of travel. I find that it climbs better than some bikes with less travel and definitely better than most that have more. Descending though the Hightower LT takes the advantage for a lot of reasons. More travel up front and back, slacker angles, more aggressive tires. I really find the Hightower LT as a balanced bike that can handle almost anything. However if I could ride a Ripley with my setup choices(better tires, 140mm fork, wider bars), That bike I think would rip. It wont go down the same stuff the LT can as fast but it would be a great trail bike if you trails are not as demanding. Ill be trying a Sentinal sometime this spring and will be doing more comparisons. I think right now in the pipeline for comparisons I have the Wreckoning VS SB5.5 and Wreckoning VS Hightower LT.

    Yes climbing is a priority here in the Bay Area (nor cal). I agree on the cockpit set up. Personally would go with wider and a smidge taller bars and down to 2.4 Maxxis Minion DHF up front and similar at rear. I am 6' even 32 ish inseam and demo'd a large. I felt the cockpit to be a tad short. On the flats while tooling I felt a lot of weight on my hands and noticed my sternum seemed to be just over the top of the stem. Will be trying an XL next to see the diff. Maybe a large with a tad longer stem would be the ticket as I felt I was in a good position for climbing both long stints and technical just a little cramped. Appreciate your comments and insight regarding the LT and LS. I will for sure try the LT

    Man I looked over at Beacon on the way to work and the south facing side looks almost all clear. A buddy that does trail work scouted around yesterday and said it should be near ready after another week of weather like we are having and no new snow. The trails are still icy due to hiking and Fat bikes.

    That's good to know about Beacon! I think we are projected to get some more snow this weekend and possibly next weekend, but weather does change, so hopefully it changes for the best. I rode yesterday in Spokane Valley/Liberty Lake area. There is a trail system called Saltese Uplands (Saltese Conservation). Have you ridden there before? It was pretty muddy but not much ice at all. It's a little slow moving and like trying to bike in molasses but it was fun getting out.

    I have been there a few times. It is definitely a good place to scratch that itch you get from not riding all winter. Right now I have been getting back into the gym and running because that was a personal weak point for me last season. I will most likely be on the road bike most of the early year and then work in some dirt as the weather improves. But its hard to ignore when you have a fresh bike waiting to be ridden!

    Yeah good way of putting it. It's not the most exciting trail, but it is hard not to get out there! Sounds like you have a good plan with running, working out and road biking. I got a bike trainer during the winter so I have been doing that and working out at home for now.

    Both bikes are beautiful works of art and engineering! Meant to be ridden and not sit on display. Yeah, I can have lazy streaks about such things. And I know that the Santa Cruz is not maintenance free either. I do very basic work like cleaning, or replacing pads and have felt the motivation to learn more DIY. And I've been spoiled, after a fashion, riding a Specialized Roll Sport with seatpost shock and plus tires. 36psi is pretty cushy. But the Santa Cruz lineup calls to me. Still some hills in my East TN area that I have to do in spurts. All the best!

    Great comparison man! I thought that Santa Cruz Bikes also have grease ports so you could push new grease into the bearings if you want to freshen up the old grease or if you pressure washed it and are worried all the grease was washed out. Maybe that was for the older Santa Cruz Bikes

  • @RideEatWander

    @RideEatWander

    6 жыл бұрын

    That is an excellent point that I forgot to mention. It does have a grease port. Although when I did a complete strip down, the bearing seemed to have plenty(or what I presumed as plenty) of grease in there and the bearings still had a hitch into their movement. I'm going to keep a better eye on it this go round and comment when I do follow up reviews on the Hightower LT.

    Good review. Did you mention your height and frame sizing? I tested the “regular” HT in XL and me being 6’3” I did feel a bit streched out on the bike. I just bought a Ripley LS in XL and it is spot on for me. I just have to say, if you’re about to bash your bucks on a bike, demo it! It just says way more than reviews.

    I am 6' with shoes. My daily driver is an XL but i run a 40mm stem and also my saddle all the way forward. Arm and torso length are going to be just as important to bike fit as overall height. The Large LS that I rode felt good for a do it all bike but i think if i were going to get one I would go XL too. Great bike!

    i was 98% sold on the 5.5 until i looked into the infinity switch - £300 just for the replacement part. i then watched a video of someone changing it and it's far too messy for the average rider. tried to demo one but they wouldn't allow me due to the weather, which just spoke even more to me about the bike. i'm now 100% sold on the lt and am in the process of ordering one!

    Very nice! You will have to keep me posted on how you like it. Ya I seem to recall that Yeti seemed very confident in the system but I had my questions around it as well. Some videos show stancion wear, simple servicing turning into whole part replacing. Even if you had to replace the VPP link its much more affordable and don't forget you have lifetime replacement on the bearings.

    definitely, that lifetime replacement and lifetime frame warranty speaks eons about their brand and bikes. i also realised that the 5.5 had a pressfit bb too and that helped sway me. why any manufacturer would put one on a mountain bike is beyond me. i'll let you know when i finally get it!

  • @RideEatWander

    The Orbea Rallon has been getting rave reviews with its overall package. Looks like their bikes start out around $5kusd. For that price you are getting better suspension than the Yeti with the Fox Factory DPX2 shock vs performance. The fork I think is the same. The rest of the bike will come down to mostly Sram vs Shimano. It also has the current trend of Steep Seat tube angles and Slacker head tube which should make this a very comfortable bike. I have not tried one yet so I cant give my full opinion but I hope I can try one soon.

    I share your assessment of the "muted" feedback on the LT rear suspension. What are your thoughts on increasing sag and adding a volume spacer to make more progressive?

  • @RideEatWander

    @RideEatWander

    6 жыл бұрын

    Adding a spacer would definitely make it more progressive but I am not sure if the added sag would increase sensitivity. In theory it would since its less pressure to work against but then you are taking away a part of the travel the bike has to work with. The thing about the LT is that the "feel" may be muted but the suspension is still working and providing traction even though it doesn't feel like it. If I were to personally chase more sensitivity, I would probably start with different shock tunes and compression tuning. Also give a Needle Bearing Bushing a try. To me its the most simple but effective way to bring some sensitivity back.

  • @RideEatWander

    @RideEatWander

    6 жыл бұрын

    +Go 4 Jay if money wasnt a factor I would probably buy a Push 11/6 shock for the Wreckoning. I have had this shock before and the ability to have 2 completely independent circuits from each other would make this bike perfect I think. You could truly have a dedicated climb setting that isn't just a lock out. It could have tuned rebound and compression to make it the best climber and then a dedicated DH mode. The extra weight in my opinion isn't as much of a factor when you have the power going where it needs to go. With the Hightower LT, the one tweak I wish it could have is the ability to run a angleset headset. That way I could slacken it out by .5 to 1 degree witch would offset the Bottom Bracket being raised with a longer fork, shorten the reach just a tad and also slacken the seat angle a little. If I could have these things I would probably go with the Evil Wreckoning. The downhill capabilities of this bike is beyond what I have experienced but the performance in the flat and energy consumed climbing is concerning for me especially when it comes to racing.

    I just don't see the benefit anywhere. Maybe it's a manufacturing cost idea or something but after having severing Press Fit frames I have come to appreciate threaded again. Pressfit BB's that thread together aren't bad since you can use an identical tool to work on them but still.

    Jack can you tell me a little more about your tracks you will be competing on? Is it more endurance based? lots of technical climbing? What are the descents like? Also what price point and build would you be looking to get? The LT and 5.5 are about evenly matched in pedaling efficiency, However if there is a lot of technical climbing, you will be spending a lot more energy on the LT getting over obstacles. If you want to prioritize downhill, in my opinion the LT will have the most potential especially if you upgrade to a 160mm fork. I dont have experience on the Orbea yet so I cannot really help you there.

    Bike|ariously yea my race courses aren’t really flat and are about 18 miles each. So they don’t have too technical spots for climbing so maybe a more endurance based bike would work. On the Santa Cruz:Carbon CC X01. Yeti sb5.5:Torq x01 eagle.

    @Bike|ariously What are your thoughts, I’m looking for a new trail bike. Yeti SB4.5c vs Evil Following MB vs OG SC Hightower? All 2018 models. Which would make the best all-around trail bike? I do think the plus compatibility is nice, but more interested in 29er. Looking for a good pedaler that’s still capable descending, also playful and being agile are important. Thx

    +baileywhit man what a list of bikes to choose from. I think the best overall trail bike would have to be the Following MB or the Hightower. The SB4.5 is an excellent bike and I have a friend that loves his to death but I think the 140mm fork up front on the 4.5 will have a tendency to get you into situations where the rear will be overwhelmed. In my opinion though it will climb the best and be one of the fastest when the ground is more level but if your trails have a lot medium to large sized repeated hits like rock gardens, the front will take it fine but the rear could get a little harsh. The Following MB will punch way above it's weight. The DELTA is truly impressive in terms of how it tracks the ground and feels bottomless. Even with less travel up front I feel like it does more with less. The Hightower on paper seems like the perfect trail bike. 135mm of travel out back with 140 up front. Slacker up front than the MB and steeper on the seat angle as well. The hightower VPP though will not match the feeling of the MB though which isn't necessarily bad because the traction is there but some don't like the feel. Things to consider. The DELTA uses a lot of bearings. 10 in total and a lot of those are small. The hightower uses 8 but most of them are a lot bigger and I believe they still have lifetime bearing replacement on their bikes. Switch infinity on the 4.5 needs regular love to prevent stancion wear. Another bike I think you should consider is the Ripley LS with a 140mm fork. The one I tested is one of my favorite bikes that I have tried. I did a video review on one if you are curious. It has an incredibly stiff rear end, climbs just as good as the 4.5 and descended well. It will need a Pike or 36 though to match the stiffness of the rear. The supplied 34 didn't quite cut it for me. Hope this helps! Andrew

    Bike|ariously Hey man, thx. That actually does help a lot. My local trails are somewhat flat, but I drive up an hour to the mountains at least twice a month. So the bike will get lots of variation in trails. Pisgah and Dupont national forest will be about the rowdiest trails it will see. There’s so many great bikes now, it’s hard to go wrong. But if I’m spending 5k, want it to be right! I watched your Ripley video and checked out the spec, looks like a great bike but not sure if the geo will work for me. I’m 5’10” with 30” inseam, but I’d want a size large for the reach. Not sure if it will fit a 150mm dropper with its longish seat tube. Best thing would be to demo each one, not sure I can get on an Evil or Ibis though. Btw, love your video filming, really appreciate the 3rd person views seeing the suspension react to pedaling and rocks/roots etc.. subbed and keep it up!

    Thank you for the feedback! I'm glad you appreciate the fine details. I don't think you could go wrong with the HT. Definitely try one though because like I said the rear end feel is not for everyone. If you can get past it I think it will be the perfect trail bike. If you do get one, I would highly recommend a needle bearing bushing for the rear eye of the shock. It helps liven up the rear end.

    I agree the vpp bikes seem to get a little more hung up on technical climbs but when pointed down they do a great job at dampening the trail chatter. Yeti climbs technical better but feels harsher deeper in its travel vs the vpp

    I would really like to take both bikes on a longer sustained run which I should be able to this year since the SB5.5 belongs to a friend. The VPP is deceiving and thats unfortunate because I think the "feel" turns away some people but don't realize the traction is all there and it makes for a stable consistent feel.

    Not by feel no. Something to consider is that even though on paper you are adding 10mm of height to the front, when you set the sag at 20%, the difference is actually more close to 2mm. 20% of 150mm is 30mm and 20% of 160mm is 32. Also I believe on the current Fox and Rockshox stuff the axle to crown is shorter on the RS stuff in comparable travel.

    I want a bike for enduro racing, but something that still makes for a fun trail bike. Sounds like the Hightower is a the better option. Would you agree?

  • @RideEatWander

    Peyton they are both Great bikes and either will do just fine. I think the Yeti would actually make a better trail bike because it climbs very well, can be built very light but also handle just about anything short of a World Cup Downhill course. The LT doesn't climb as well as the SB5.5 and is a tad heavier but its downhill abilities and also downhill potential I think are greater than the Yeti. Another configuration to look at would be the Regular Hightower with a 150mm Fork. That extra 15mm of rear travel is very unnoticeable on most things short of Large jumps and drops or if you terrain is just that rough. That would be a very snappy trail bike and handle Enduro racing as well.

    Bike|ariously thanks a lot for that information. I had heard previously that the yeti is less snappy and playful than the Hightower lt which is why I was thinking the Hightower is a better fit. I think that when the time comes I’ll have to demo ride some bikes to see what I like the most. Honestly I don’t care too much about climbing because I’m fit enough to climb just about anything. I also have an xc hardtail that climbs amazing. I am mainly looking for a fast race bike that will feel snappy and playful at the same time. The regular Hightower could work.

    I would agree in that perception since the Switch infinity system is pretty linear compared to the LT. However I wouldn't necessarily say that its slower because it will go about its speed differently. Rider style will dictate you decision more I think. If you want a bike that really holds a line well and is really planted the Yeti will do great. If you find your lines more unconventionally and really like to pump and pop the LT will do better but still not the best compared to other bikes in that category. Remember the Switch Infinity system is a 3x overall EWS winner.

    Bike|ariously yes that’s what I’ve heard about the sb 5.5 and I’m sure it would be a great race bike, but I’m worried that the bike will feel out of its element on my everyday rides. I would say my rider style is more like suited towards the lt. You said that it is not the best in “that” category. What category do you refer to? Also what bikes would you say are better?

  • @RideEatWander

    I was referring to the playfullness of the LT in the longish travel 29er category. Between the LT and SB5.5 the LT definitely has more pop to it but it is still not as good as others. Bikes that would be more playful would be the YT Jeffsy and Capra both come to mind along with the Specialized Stumpjumper just to name a few. I wouldn't call these bikes better but definitely have more playful characteristic. I find though the LT is a good balance between the two.

  • @RideEatWander

    @RideEatWander

    +Bandit TwentyNine the SB5.5 was 28.5lbs with pedals in size large and the Hightower LT was about 31. Keep in mind the LT was the less expensive "S" build. Depending on the size and build of the LT, 32 lbs should really only happen if you have an XL with heavy pedals. My personal LT is just under 31 with pedals, XO1 Eagle, Lyrik, frame protection and EDC tool.

    So I actually just spent some time on my buddies 5.5 today (same one in video) and I mist say the biggest thing that stands out is that it feels small. We installed a float x2 and the bike rides amazing but way to small for my preference. I am I'm between bikes right now so I am building the new one and selling my LT which is why I riding his. Capability wise they are both excellent but I think the LT just has a little more confidence inspiring ride for the DH. If you are interested in an LT, mine has an almost all new build with a push coil. Let me know if that sounds interesting.

    If money was no object I would have to pick the Hightower LT and add a 160mm fork. The feel of the VPP does not bother me and I think the package overall will be able to handle almost anything. It also has some intangibles that I appreciate that make working on the bike so much easier and as a rider that likes to do their own maintenance that means spending less time on such things. Keep in mind the bike does not "need" a 160mm fork for most people. It's a fine package the way it is. Enduro-Mtb.com did a 10 bike shoot out of the most popular enduro bikes our right now and the LT took the fastest average times with multiple test riders. It is very balanced and capable. My choice to run a 160mm fork is completely personal.

    Bike|ariously the LT would be my choice too, awesome looking bike - I’m looking to test ride one in the Summer time - it’s a small thing but no room for a water bottle is one of the things that puts me off the Yeti, besides that it’s a beast
