I bought (& still have) the brushed ally version (they did these in black or silver). They date from the late 1970's, I got mine in mid-1979. I recently unearthed mine after getting on for 25 years unused & tests seemed fine, but after a couple of hours use, it blew the left channel! Further tests showed the same problem with the bias transistor. (Shortly before to storing it, I'd replaced the power transistors, but can't now recall if I setting the bias. Suspect that was the cause of the problem...!). I will be ordering a load of parts, as it was quite a nice sounding amp back in the dim and distant...

Yeah, it seems to be a recurring problem and maybe a bit of design failure. Thermal runaway can kill an amp in this very manner

Very good video. In the other hand, for audio quality price ratio it is one of the best. If you look at the construction details, it's obviously not very good, but you may be comparing it to equipment that easily triples or quadruples its value.

Sansui A-60 uses 150k Ohm B log stereo volume potentiometer, which is very hard to come by this days. If you want to replace it, which will you use, 100k or 250k one?

You can find the service manual at hifiengine. That way you can match the part numbers to the correct location and orientation.

hi Trevor, i have the same amp & still working. But recently, the left channel went out & have no output. No signal on the v.u meter as well (only on right channel). So, what should i check first? with the current lockdown situation its quite hard for me to bring the amp to any repair shop. Thanks.

Hi, sadly since there is no fusing or other protection for each channel, A dead channel could mean a blown output stage. That would mean a trip to a repair shop ($$$). There could be other reasons why a signal isn't getting out to the speakers but my bets are on shorted output transistors. The design of this amp is very minimalist and Sansui didn't do well in adding protection circuits. Also, the heatskinking is sub-par, that's only my opinion but I'll bet your dead channel was the result of thermal runaway

Hi Trevor I got the same sansui on my bench it is still running, everything works but I hear hum sign of capasitors or first electrolytes are going to pop. I see no caps leaking or having a thick head😂 but I want to save this beauty. I did found the manual but I don't have a parts list could you provide me the download link or upload it somewhere. I would be happy. 😉

@@TrevorsBench Thx Trevor I just found it elsewhere but this link is good too. I changed the 4558 to a early version burson opamp it sounds very good. But like I said the caps are bad, all quality electrolytes nichicon and elna, I'll drop it new ones and little higher voltage resistance example 10uf/16v to 10uf/25v or some higher. Trevor a tip read the pdf from your phone or pc screen then you can read it well 😁

Do you take gear to repair shipped to you? I have one of these with one channel out thanks

Honestly, I wouldn't spend the money to ship this for repair. It's a good sounding amp but this is low end for Sansui

For the A80 bias should be 1.5mv.

I guess you are right, lol! I had one back in the day is why I am so biased, lol! After I got My NAD amp, there is no going back. Still have a whole collection of Sansui speakers though!

@@TrevorsBench I had a fully working mint one, could never find a buyer at 30 bucks. Sold it for 15 after 3 months. Cant even use it as a doorstop it's so light . But your video is very informative and helpful nonetheless.
