Caribbean music was a big influence in New Orleans. Danny Barker based his whole banjo style on this and this reminds me of things Danny would play. When I was studying with Punch one of the things I learned was "Going back to Jamaica". I think he said it was a Chris Kelly specialty and he demonstrated it using a plunger mute for "talking". I am glad to hear what you're doing and I want to explore more of this here. Under the western swing umbrella we can try anything.
