Makar Sankranti is an important festival celebrated in different parts of the country. The day celebrated on January 14 marks the beginning of the auspicious Uttarayanam. Makar Sankranti is an ideal example of unity in diversity. Every state in India has different ways of celebrating Makar Sankranti, but the theme-harvest season-is the unifying factor.
On this day, Lord Surya is worshipped, prayers and thanks are offered, devotees also worship Lord Vishnu and Goddess Lakshmi during Makara Sankranti.
Makar Sankranti punya kala or auspicious time starts at 8:30 am and ends at 5:46 pm
According to legends, Sankranti - after whom the festival is named - was a deity who slew the evil Shankarasura. The day after Makar Sankranti is called Karidin or Kinkrant. On this day Devi killed the wicked Kinkarasura. Facts and Glimpses of Makar Sankranti are available in Panchang. Panchang is a Hindu almanac that provides data on Sankranti's age, build, attire, movement and development.
In India, Sakranti is observed as the date when the sun begins to move north, before Makar Sankranti, the sun shines on the southern half of the globe. Hindus believe this period to be the Uttarayana period - or the holy period. According to the Mahabharata, Bhishma's father believed that Surya would be in Uttarayana to receive death.
