What a very pleasant, genuine and unpretentious man. So badly miss him. Rest easy, David (1945-2024).

Fantastic interview. I know it's a few years old, but it covers my concerns with Smooth Jazz, and I can't think of a better person than Sanborn to give it some perspective.

To get a true feel for your programming, I am REALLY going to make it a point of listening to your station for at least several days with the hope that I can say you're one of my favorites. Being that you are so passionate, I think this is the least I can do. :)

Terrific Interview and perspective from Sanborn. I despise the smooth jazz association with Bob James and David Sanborn. Great mention of Miles in that "Smooth jazz" convo. First time listening to Sandy,

With our mobile app and over 60 stations reporting their playlist to our Top 50 Album Chart, many privately owned online stations are back to playing what inspires them. I'm happy to tell you that your assessment of the exciting world of internet radio is not as you think and many est. and indie artists are now getting airplay, global fan base and sales without the chokehold of corp consultants. We look forward to working with David on his next release to our global audience and SJ industry.

Greetings-- A follow up to my posts from Feb...I have been listened to your station off and on since that time and I do like it :-) My ire with the current state of the contempo jazz genre lies more with the newer artists (e.g. I can't really tell the difference between the sound of keyboardist Brian Culbertson & Brian Simpson, but I CAN tell the difference between Bob James and the late George Duke). The 'Smooth Jazz' moniker has been the genre's death knell, IMO. The name says (cont)...

Thanks Judie, I will pass your note along to Sandy. Your dedication and interaction with us over the years has been encouraging and meaningful in our quest to "get the music to the people". ~Donna P.

SmoothJazzcom Global Radio, 1-3 internet radio pioneers since 2000, is owned by it's creators, Sandy Shore and D. Phillips. Dissatisfied from decades with corp FM, our mission is to create a new path to get the music to the people. We have helped hundreds of est. + indie artists, labels and events reach the widening global audience for the rich, deep, inclusive ver. of SJ that we program complete with click to buy buttons to enhance sustainability. David tracked us down for this interview btw.

Thanks, I hope you will also notice on the site and mobile app, the buy buttons and constant new artist promotion. Unlike FM, we don't USE the artist's music to sell the listener widgets. We use our global platform to respectfully give all artists a level playing field to reach an audience unbound and untainted from US FM notions... my passion is derived from providing an inclusive innovative path where there was none... hence why David agreed to and sought out the interview :-) SJcom/meetus

Did you know that when the RIAA invoked the per listener fees on internet broadcasters (not FM) we faced extinction or evolution? Because we opted for the more tedious direct artist licensing, although our music choices are vast, it is cost prohibitive to play any performance owned by one of the BIG three labels. So we choose from the best of what IS available to us from artists who own their own performances. Check our Listening Loft to see all of the new releases we are currently promoting.

"Internet Jazz" which stations? Do you listen to the original station? SmoothJazzdotcom? We agreed with you, hence why we created a new model. Can you imagine Sandy being a radio veteran since 15 and fighting for this music to the degree that we invented our own radio station online when there were NONE? We have introduced more new jazz than any other station, our World Premiers of Fourplay, Spyro, Jarreau and many others have put them at #1 Amazon/iTunes pre-sales. Have you listened?

I've been listening to this genre since my young teen years back in the mid-70s, when contempo jazz was known as 'fusion' so I remember what radio stations that played this kind of music was in the 70s/80s & early 90s. I stopped listening to SJ stations circa '96; the programming became sanitized & boring. I listen to Internet jazz all day while at work & with some exceptions, I hear the same programming mindset only on a much larger scale because of the myriad of choice (post continues)...

"Boring and predictable" which is what a lot this 'smooth jazz' music out there is. Don't know what percentage of your audience can say they were listening to the Brecker Brothers (with Sanborn on alto sax) back in early 1975-- as a 14 y/o female-- this is the history and perspective I come from. I've witnessed the contempo jazz progression over the past 40 years -- I didn't jump on its bandwagon and 'discovered' the music and the likes of a David Sanborn, et.al 10-12 years ago. ;-)

Yes, there's alot more SJ out there but not all of it is good; overall the genre isn't as exciting as it use to be-- alot of bland. I have listened to your channel but it didn't hold my attention. I will make it a point to revisit and stay longer than 30 min. There's much more I could say here. If I ever book this cruise I'll seek Sandy out--maybe we can have a friendly debate over a cup of coffee :). Interesting that Sanborn acutally sought you out-- BUT he was, afterall, the co-host ;)

David said it best. The “Quiet Storm” format was the real deal. Smooth Jazz, the label, is watered down crap, period.

The Internet HAS NOT 'stepped up' and taken over where FM radio use to be back in the day. Unless the station is truly independent, that is certainly not the case. Internet radio, more or less, is keeping the same formatting 'gold standard' Clear Channel has set for radio. And, the music in the 'Smooth Jazz' genre has become formulaic and banal-- everything is beginning to sound like Kenny G *shutter*. Sanborn is just being polite-- I'd like to hear what he REALLY thinks off camera.;)
