Sanding with Festool - Part 1

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

I thought it a good idea to create a two part video about sanding with Festool whilst I still had the cordless machines on loan from Festool UK. There are many other sanders that I do not show but I expect this selection to cover the needs of most woodworkers.

    The hand sanding block is brilliant. I use it when I am patching Gypsum board with my CT36AC. I also have the RTSC400 which is a brilliant finish sander.

    Hi Peter, as always you are a fountain of knowledge. Thank you so much for that heads up. I had no idea Festool were taken over saw stop. I’m looking for a cabinet grade or professional saw and I had my eye on saw stop for some time now. I even emailed them last year and at that time they had no intention of supplying outside the US. I will now look up contact details for Festool and ask them their view on the table saw. Thanks again Peter.

    Hi Daniel, I am sure that Festool will use the technology on some of their kit or create specially designed kit with it fitted. I have not heard any time frame. What I hope will happen is that the current Sawstop models will reach the European market. Good luck with your research. Peter

    Hi, Peter. At 1:20, I could not help breaking into a huge grin when you referred to the "/" in the ETS EC 150/3 as "...oblique..." That sounds so very proper British. Being a denizen of the domain across the pond, that was a new one for me. We 'mericans usually call that a "slash," unless one is in the military where it's supposedly referred to as a "stroke." Of course, everyone knows it's really a "virgule," which sounds much nicer than a "slash" -- and which reminds me that I need someday to write my great American murder mystery novel, "The Mad Virguler." Thanks for the superbly comprehensive review of the Festool line of sanders. Cheers. : D s/ W.R. (Ms.)

    For those in the UK my novel, Stone Message, (a Mystery/Thriller with a dash of Sci-Fi) can be found here: www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B004GUSDWW but as you are in the US, this is the link: www.amazon.com/dp/B004GUSDWW It is selling quite well on the UK market. The Amazon statistics vary from hour to hour but I have been in the top 10 of all electronic and paper Sci-Fi in the UK. Cheers. Peter

    Well presented Peter. You could easily open up another channel just doing product reviews. One thing that I would really like to see you do is a video on wood finishes. What and where to use various products. Lacquer, varnish, stain, oil. Tung oil! What’s that all about. How can you put another finish over Tung oil? How does it stick? Oil versus water. Very confusing for a beginner.

    Hi Peter, I don't wish to be critical, but you didn't mention the Festool Sanding block HSK-D 150 W #495965 (soft) or HSK-D 150 H #495966 (hard). I have one of these, I confess I'm not sure which but think it's 495965, and it's excellent. I take used disks off my RO150 then fit them onto the sanding block. It's one of the best Festool things I've got and probably the cheapest! Chris

You can also try 3M Cubitron foil with air presure sanders - it's very light system and very, very effective. 3M Cubitron II 775L Hookit - is the winner for me (yes, i've try Mirka, Festool or Kovax too) - 3-4 longer life and 2x speed of work, no dust at all.

    Hi again Peter, I wondered if I could ask you a question that might be outside your comfort zone and if anyone else could help. I am a Carpenter/joiner and I am setting up a new workshop later this year as I am moving house and I always like to have a workshop so I can make furniture objects as a hobby on my down time from work. My son has started to show an interest in what I’m doing and I’d love to be able to work with him at home, but I worry about his safety in particular working with the table saw. I have decided to buy a new one and I was excited to learn that “saw stop” produce a fantastic feature that stops and drops the blade when it comes into contact with human skin. Unfortunately saw stop do not supply to Europe and I wondered if you knew of a brand that has similar safety features and can be purchased in Europe (Ireland) ? Sorry for the long text. Cheers

  • @NewBritWorkshop

    @NewBritWorkshop

    Hi Daniel, I may be able to help a bit. I understand that Festool are buying out (or maybe have bought out) Sawstop. I do not know how that will affect marketing in Europe or whether there will be new tools with the safety features produced under Festool design. Bosch have a system on sale in Europe. It is called Reaxx. There was (maybe still is) a lawsuit between Bosch and Sawstop but I am sure that Festool would want that to be quickly sorted out. The system looks very effective. Here is a video kzread.info/dash/bejne/ZpyZqJKSYpC3icY.html. Good luck. Peter

    Hi Peter, thank you for getting back to me so fast. I always look forward to your videos as they are honest reviews from the consumers point of view. I was considering the rotex 150 but I take on board what you advise on the rotex 90. What would be your second choice in case I come across a bargain for two. Cheers

    Hi Daniel, Yes, of course, CE approval - that could take a while as tools normally base their applications of existing cases that have been accepted. If there is nothing with the same functionality then they have to start from scratch. Peter

    I owned the Festool ETS EC 150/5 and honestly its not a patch on the Mirka DEROS. The Mirka simply has it beat in every area - control, vibration, finish, noise, ergonomics, dust extraction and mirka has a huge catalogue of sanding accessories. This is one case where Festool simply isn't the best choice.
