Sanding vs Buffing Polymer Clay

A short video on how I prefer to finish my clay pieces. I understand that some techniques require sanding but for everything thing else this is my go to! I hope you find this tip useful :)

These are the tools that I used in this video. I also use a Dremel but this little cordless rotary tool is so light and small that I find myself using it very often. Bonus it’s about 1/4 of the cost if Dremel :)

Great tips, thank you! The buffing wheels in your link are no longer available on Amazon 😢 Do you have suggestions that would work for the dremel stylo?

I buff with a buffer bit but get white residue on darker colors even though I just buff the edge..why??

Your felt tip may be too abrasive. Or there is to much clay that needs to be buffed off. There should only be a tiny bit of clay on your edges that need to be buffed.

How to bring shine on jewelry pcs without using resin or any kind of gloss

Perhaps it is the type of clay you are using. Soufflé and similar clays have a natural matte finish and won’t really buff to a shine. What I do is use Premo for my pieces that I want to shine or add some Premo to my soufflé.

  • @theseasaltco5691

I only buff, no sanding. There really is no need to sand unless you are trying to achieve a glass like finish.

I typically only buff but some styles do require sanding clay especially if it’s a stone look.

But please, if you wet sand never ever let any sanding residue get into your water streams! It’s awful for the environment and our health (micro plastic).

Please be careful bc there is dust even worth buffing wheels. Wearing a mask is so important!😊
