🐾 Sand Pit | HAMSTER DIY 🐾

Sand is great for hamsters, it can keep their claws short and their fur clean. It also provides a nice cool place for them to sit in the summer heat. Simulate a hamster's natural habitat, keep them entertained, digging for treats buried in the sand. Add sand to your hamster's environment by putting this cute DIY sand pit in their cage. Constructed from cardboard, balsa wood and popsicle sticks. It can be removed from the cage for easy cleaning.

What sand should I use?
Sand that is clean, dry and dust-free, e.g. play sand. ⚠Never use chinchilla dust, as this can cause respiratory problems in hamsters. You can sterilise sand by sifting it through a sieve, spreading it thinly on trays and baking it in the oven for about 15 minutes.
What cardboard should I use?
Cardboard that is clean and free of any ink, tape or glue
What wood should I use?
Balsa is the safest kind of wood for pet toys because the splinters are soft and fluffy and can not hurt them.
I used 4mm balsa sheets for the walls and 13mm balsa strips for the supports. You can find packs of balsa wood at craft stores or online. Alternatively, you could use some thick cardboard or popsicle sticks.
⚠ Avoid soft woods like pine and cedar and man-made boards like plywood and MDF as they contain toxic things
What glue should I use?
Any glue that is non-toxic and water soluble e.g. PVA, Elmer's and school glue. Non-toxic means that it will not poison the hamster. Water soluble means that if the hamster were to accidentally swallow a little, it would just dissolve. Since hot glue is not water soluble, it would not dissolve, and could cause blockages, which is why I don't recommend it.
What paint should I use?
Soy Paint and Plastikote project enamel (the brush on kind) are both non-toxic. Any paint that is labelled as safe for babies should be ok. Use it in thin coats and sand away any blobs because it's still not good for them to swallow in large quantities. If your hamster is a big chewer, it might be best to avoid paints.
You could also stain the wood with a natural food dye, or make your own from vegetables.
What if my hamster pees in it?
If you're worried about this, you can apply some brush-on plastikote (a non-toxic enamel safe for hamsters, but not the spray on kind) to the floors so that they can just be disinfected and wiped clean

i love this channel because it's so unique and different. i've never seen anybody have so much dedication for a little creature quite like this person. i love the quality of all of these videos and i love the absolute bond that this person has with their animal. i wish more people found joy in having a pet, and i wish more people were willing to do these types of things for animals. i have a strong belief that animals should be treated like kings and queens while they're on this earth. thank you for setting such adorable examples. :-)

Awe poor thing she/he doesn't know what happened to the sand😂 one moment he was digging and the next all the sand was gone 🐹 but my hamsters (I have two robos) they have two sand baths and they just sit in there eating and while they eat they poop 😝 that's why I don't give my hamsters lots of treats/food while I'm holding them or else I would be one big poop factory😂
Watching a hamster enjoy its habitat is a sublime experience.

Isamar Juarez me and my sister wanted a hamster for months and we would just sit on the couch watching other people spoil theirs until the day before we left for Christmas vacation our parents got us hamster cages! I was so happy! But I don't use the ones they have me because they are to small 😞 I'll just use them for traveling cages, but I ended up getting two robos living together (marshmallow and cotton) and my sister got a dwarf hamster (petunia) and a Syrian (bear) don't worry the Syrian doesn't live with any other hamsters and they all live in a 496 sq in cage (my robots live in a 900 sq in cage) and rn I am working on 963 sq in cage with multiple levels for my robos I hope their happy ❤️

Hey I love your videos! I see though that a lot of your videos do not get monetized and that's a shame because you follow the KZread guidelines. I looked to see if you had a Patreon in the description and you do. When I clicked on it though I noticed you do not have much support at all. I think a lot of your subs just do not know about it because you don't announce it in a video. I think if you did that a lot more your subs would click and become a patreon. I've noticed that with other youtubers, once they announced in a vid that they needed financial support, a lot helped out. You put so much effort in your vids and deserve to have more patreons. I'll gladly support you.

If you dry the sand in the oven first it won't clump, and it'll be more effective if Vanilla wants to roll in it to clean himself. :3 Alternatively you can use chinchilla sand which will be fully dry already, but either way, for 5kg that will take you a while to dry it or cost a quite a bit in chinchilla sand, sorry! If you ever get dwarf hamsters though, they especially need drier sand to keep their fur in good condition, not quite as key with Syrians. :)

Chinchilla *dust* does cause issues with hamsters, which she mentions in the description, but the chinchilla *sand* does not. She also uses the oven to sterilise, which is awesome! It's just not long enough to fully dry it out.
Oh thank you so much! I wanted an easy way around making a wrap around tank loft for my future hamster and this made my life so much easier without the use of power tools! I just need to add support beams and aqua silicone as stronger glue. Very pleased, thank you!

Mack&cheese plate You can get it at a pet store (it's called chinchilla sand but be sure it is sand and not dust) or you can get children's playsand at a DIY or hardware store. There is no such thing as a fancy bear hamster, your hamster is most likely a Syrian. Pet shops give Syrians nicknames to make them seem more rare or special, or so that they can make more money off of them.
