Sanaa Gateja Rolled Secrets at KARMA
Ойын-сауық
James Kalm pedals through the streets of New York City, camera in pocket, and eyes open, looking for manifestations of culture. Despite a current heat wave, a glance through a front window during a late-night cruise through the East Village convinced him that he should return, and file a report on Sanaa Gateja, at Karma.
Quoting from the press release, “Gateja transforms natural materials and post-consumer paper waste into complex, mosaic-like works. Using materials such as hand-rolled paper beads and cloth made from soaked and pounded strips of inner bark, the Uganda-based artist merges fiber art, installation, painting, and sculpture. The beads, sourced from recycled paper, are first hand-rolled and cut to form and then sewn onto the barkcloth to create intricate compositions.” These lush tapestries ride an edge between the folk-art tradition of beaded curtains and the abstract design of high Modernism. A musical introduction is provided by KJ Denhert @kjdenhert.com and was recorded at Sonny’s Bar, Red Hook Brooklyn, July 7, 2023 This program was recorded July 13, 2023. #jameskalmreport #jameskalmroughcut #lorenmunk

Something weirdly perfect, wonderful and new about these!!
wonderful, thank you
Thanks for the shout out!
Very sensitive and informed commentary - thanks James 👍
Thank you Kate! ❤
Incredible video! (The best cover of "Blackbird" ever?) CNN has a fascinating video on youtube that shows how the beads are made. Thanks for turning me on to Sanaa's work!
Love those journeys so much.
That is just wow stuff ... refreshing thought provoking work love the Vincent reference ....sure it was hard not to reach in and touch these pieces ❤🎥
Thank you!!!
The works give a sense of contemporary Australian Indigenous paintings and particle physics with each bead acting as a discreet quanta of energy or light photon. Thankyou to whom it may concern.
the amount of hours these works represent is mind blowing. the intricacy is amazing and the textures created lures you in with promise of tactility. stunning
Stunning work! I have seen work from this artist before here in London in the 1-54 exhibition in Somerset House. Amazing textures. Thanks for sharing. Good sounds too 😊
Very warm, comfortable and homely work. It has the vibe of the 70s craft era, like those thick tapestries that I believe were all the rage. Great color palettes - again, giving a very comforting vibe. Would be interested to know how those paper beads are made exactly. Thank you Monsieur, et Mme. Kate aussi!

Kate also talked about a 70s vibe, and some hipster tote bags that were made from recycled stuff, and were popular when she went to college...JK
Nice review as always - but I am struggling to find any value in these 'craft' works beyond the decorative. Gateja's profile on afriartgallery states that he "allows the material to speak in its own micro-cosmos and ‘weaves’ them into abstract narratives commenting on social and political realities in his home country Uganda". Am I missing something?
Heat Wave here in Houston TX for over a month and no departure in sight. Cooler weather comes in about 10 weeks - mid to late October!
