we just returned from San Pedro de Atacama. We did 3 Tours, including an all day one to Lakes 1, 2, 3 (salt flats) at 4200 m. the guide trips we Took were Limited to about 8 people and the guides were good and entusiastic. Most speak spanish, portuguese, and English. While the Tours are expensive you will learn a lot about indigeneous culture and the natural history of the area - so that in my opinion was important to better appreciate this unique natural area. Fun fact: San Pedro is considered an oasis in the alto plano since the Incas and original natives brought water from the Andes to the Valley. Also, San Pedro is largely built on the Burial ground of the indigeneous people so there are rules enforced by the poliica (who don't have much to do) to respect dead - meaning no street dancing, esp. for gringos, in the evening.

Great to see you guys enjoy Atacama! About the restrictions and fees in each touristic place, they are there for maintenance of the sites and safety of the visitor (almost every national park in the country works the same). Hope you guys can go to the south and visit the chilean Patagonia, it is a place from another world! Enjoy your South America trip 🙌

El desierto de Atacama pertenece a Bolivia, no a Chile, por historia nos arrebataron ese territorio, pero no la idea de que aún es nuestro

Región de Atacama is the richest and most expensive region in Chile. Just to get an idea, it's GDP per capita is 70k USD/year, just about the same as Denmark's. That's why it's so expensive
