San Marino v Andorra: Can The World's Worst Team Finally Win?

35 years, 158 competitive games, 0 wins. San Marino are officially the worst football team in the world. But then, the 2022 World Cup draw threw them into the same qualifying group as Andorra. Will they EVER get a better chance to grab a competitive victory? One thing's for sure: there was no way I was going to miss it...

As one of those random dudes... I can confirm this was true. We sat with Tim and talked with some other people in the stands. They were Italian and Swiss. When were in town we kept asking locals if they were going to the game and the common response was "why? We know we are going to lose".

They also have the highest number of soccer (football) stadiums per capita of any place on earth. (Well at least I think they do, they have 26 fields and 26 teams for a population of about 50k!). If there is a place with more, I would be shocked! You should go when you can watch their championship matches or what ever they call it there.

I can symphatize with San Marino. The only way they could get out of their rut is to recruit outside from their diaspora. There must be a son or grandson of San Marino, playing in the Reserves, 2nd and 3rd division leagues in Europe. The most difficult part of this project is convincing these players to travel all the way home just to lose a match. The Philippines was in the same situation as San Marino. But the breakthrough was in the early 2000's convincing youngsters Phil and James Younghusband from Chelsea Reserves to play for the Azkals. When other players from abroad recognized that the project was serious. A lot of foreign based players started flying in for trials to join the national team. Fast forward today in 2021. We have now qualified to play in the Asian Cup twice in a row. No major trophies yet. We still haven't won a coveted AFF Cup competition in Southeast Asia. I now take comfort that whenever the Azkals steps on the pitch the opponent now respects us. Instead of being treated as whipping boys in the past. Where previously all they talk about during a pre match day press conference is. How many goals do you think you can score against the Philippines?
