San Juan Nepomuceno - The Making Of
Ойын-сауық
The making of the model ship San Juan Nepomuceno. The Scale of the model is 1:90 and it belongs at the Elite series of Artesania Latina.The time i needed to make this model was approximately 4 months with hundreds of working hours. The cost was approximately 400 euros (without the display case). The varnish is gloss by choice because it "brings out" the wood, it's more easy to clean ,you cannot have any white spots and it looks better. You can see this as my trademark! To answer a typical question, yes it will probably float ,but you will never put it in water. This video comes in 4K and has 2 sequential parts, the 1st part is a photo montage of every step of the making and the 2nd part is a plain video showing the finished model. Also the model has a few additions by me : 1) i placed railings, 2) the cannons are painted gun metal, 3) the officers quarters are painted with 2 shades of gold ,black and light blue 4) the gun ports are opened in slightly different positions (you can see my other video explaining why) 5) the cannon bodies have metallic hooks on the top 6) the cannons are tied to the deck 7) at the lamp i added a yellow glass. Enjoy!
In this video i This Video comes in 1080p.

My greatest appreciation? Your choice of music and not that annoying techno-pop explosion of over repetitive noise, making everyone run for the mute button...oh yeah.... nice ship build too!

Thank you very much! I believe that classical music is the appropriate music for a model that you can see as a work of art! :)
Absolutely a work of art, passion, and diligence few could ever achieve. Your work is a testament to those who built, sailed, and served upon her. Bravo!!

Hi John, I have watched this video 4 times. The attention to detail, the time and effort you put in to construction is obvious and much appreciated. Especially at the end of the video when you carefully show the completed work. A masterpiece! The music fits perfectly for the video and also the back ground while building the model a nice complete example of the time, patience, commitment required and the gorgeous end result. Thank you.

Thank you very much! I won't lie to you, you have to have a lot of spare time to make the models, but the result is always amazing!
Congratulations, superb! I know exactly what you went through, I did it myself almost 15 years ago, and I still have it on display. I see that the kit was upgraded, the cannons have a bit more detail, and so a few other parts. But, again, you totally nailed it.

this is a stunning work of art. All the time, precision work and patience to make ships like this is something alot of people, myself included can't fully appreciate. Also agree with you about never putting ships like this into the water. However, i do believe if someone actually did put it in the water, it will hold the water outside, but with the lack of ballast at the keel it would most likely capsize as the center of gravity would be too high without any counterweight at the keel.
@JohnsWoodenShips

Thank you very much for your kind words! You are probably right, without any counterweight it will probably capsize. Another good reason to never put it in water!

John Aliprantis if you don’t mind, I’m planning ahead and the final finish you have on your model is perfect, high shine and properly sealed, could you tell me what product you used or if it was a combination of products? Thanks
@JohnsWoodenShips
4 жыл бұрын
@@jasonwilliams3478 No problem Jason. First i used a coat of wood sealer (think of it us undercoat). The number of the wood sealer is 1419 and you also going to need Nitro thinner. Then i used 2 coats of gloss varnish for yachts. The thinner for the varnish is white spirit. I used paintbrush and not an airgun. With the airgun you won't get the amount you need , you will get a very thin coat and also at the corners it will pill up. Another problem with the airgun is that you won't get it on every single surface, only on what you are facing, not underneath. And another problem is that the thinner comes in large amount in the solution (varnish - thinner) you are spraying and you might get damaged varnish in the corners after it dries.
Brilliant work

@JohnsWoodenShips
5 жыл бұрын
Thank you very much!!! San Francisco is a beautiful model! I will make a video at the next model i'll make. For now i can only tell how to do it. For the wooden parts you have to use first a coat of wood sealer, then after it's dry you sand it down and you use the paint or the varnish. For all the parts i use 2 coats of varnish or paint except from the masts and yards which i use one. For the metal parts i use paints from Humbrol or Revell. Always 2 coats and before i apply the paint i use some thinner in analogy paint 80%-85% ,thinner 20%-15%. To paint the cannons you have to use some pointed tip toothpicks to lay the cannons on because you wont't be able to hold them from anywhere. After the paint will dry , you will have to use a coat of varnish on every metal part. I use paintbrushes in various sizes, the smallest one is 10/0.
Very beautiful👏👏👏👏👏👏👍🇹🇷

Absolutely beautiful! I particulary like the way you rigged the ship's boat for readiness of deployment -- a very nice touch which I intend to copy! So, you reckon gloss is easier to clean, eh? I was thinking of a matte finish for my build... I'm building my first, Artesania Latina's 1:48 scale plank-on-bulkhead (like yours) model of the HMS Surprise, the frigate from the movie "Master and Commander". The hull is fully planked (whew!) and the lower deck is in place. I've got a loooong way to go, in other words. Really enjoyed the video. You've every right to be proud!
