San Jose Homelessness I KQED Newsroom

For five years, Leonard Jackson lived in "The Jungle," a massive homeless encampment that was cleared out in 2014. Now, through a city program, he has housing and a paycheck. Still, there are more than 4,000 homeless people in San Jose.

You said it. It's expensive. I live in Kansas. The guy at the beginning was making $2500 per month and staying in a RV. Here you could get a decent place and pay all your utilities for under $1000 and there are plenty of jobs here. I don't understand why people who are able bodied stay there and live in poverty.

I have lived in South San Jose since January of 1971. A good friend of mine in the computer industry became homeless and I can tell you that the demographics of the homeless here in Silicon Valley are rather different than what you put forward. For example we find that 50% of the homeless are disabled or retired people on Social Security who cannot afford rent and are living in their vehicles. They don't want to be homeless they're not on drugs and unfortunately do not have the necessary financial wherewithal to leave the area and go somewhere else. We find that 20% of the homeless are as you indicate mentally challenged and or using drugs. The final 30% are working adults that have jobs, however they cannot afford rent and they are living in their vehicles.

It seems like there are those in our society who expect people, who have put a lot of effort into making a good life for themselves and their family, to support those who don't. They bring-up disabled people and mentally ill people as examples of those who need help and deserve our charity, but in truth, they are a small percentage of the homeless population. Most of the homeless just want to do things their own way which in most cases means throwing their garbage where they please, living where they please and paying no attention to the conventions which hold our society together. They show no respect for the public property yet they want you and I to pay for their food and their way of life and for politicians give them our money to do that. So who are the foolish?

I have witnessed them looking over my neighbors gates to see what the want to rip off when it becomes night and you want me to feel sorry about these drug addicts and thiefs? No thank you I will be moving out of the state and you can keep giving these people support even though they are too lazy to help themselves. In May 2018, it was appraised for 1,275M; looked at the neighbor's home down the street going for 975K, and put mine on the market for 100K less; sold in 2 months in the dead of Winter. I wanted out of San Jose that bad and got lucky. Homes aren't selling well there this year (2019), and the prices have dropped significantly. I hope you've found a place out-of-state you like, and got a decent price for your property; sure couldn't be worse than San Jose.

I spoke to a group the other day who were living in the Walmart parking lot. They informed me that even though they had applied for low income housing and that it would take up to 10 years before they would be placed somewhere. They also informed me that it was their belief that illegal immigrants were given priority for housing.

Welsh73&77 I live in a republican state and homelessness is crazy here. It's not always about sanctuary towns/cities or democrates. More homeless live where they won't die from weather. California, Arizona are hospitable cause of weather. Portland's hospitable because of all the food kitchens and open camp grounds. Homeless are in every town in some amount but they die in Chicago, Montana etc during winter. If ur homeless I'd rather spend winter in Arizona if u can make it there. In summer I'd rather spend it in Oregon or california. The south east has too many bugs for huge numbers of homeless. So I think if they can hope a train, hitch, the can go to the best spot for the season. If not they're stuck. If they make it to a reasonably easy to survive place they might just stay.

No doubt...with tears in my eyes,I see how true the Bible is,God's word...I'm not sure what verse it says, where we left his sheep get lost...we helped all those who were already far,and well fed(speaking spiritually)but those who truly needed it,were chased away, and we have done that...he says,he will help them, because we've let them stray away, where they fell prey and scattered to the wolves,I don't see a reporter ,I see a whole spirit of God,within people, helping those who we've forgot about,we were busy thinking of ourselves, our families, how great everything was, careers,we had it so good,we crushed those below, indirectly, but systematically,it just happens that way...it's by God's grace we have what we have,it's not because of all we've worked, how we've bled for it,it's not our efforts that have gave us what we have, but somehow...because we live in the land of opportunity, because we work for a living...our words, though we claim to live and honor God,they changed from,I have what I have because of God...to,I work hard for what all I have,I deserve...we go to the courts,we pay our taxes,we deserve,we demand ...it scares me ,not for myself, but I fear for people's souls, who feel secure in God,when those words come out of their mouths,in the courtrooms,in their homes,in the streets,on media...if we only knew how powerful those words in the mouths of believers means to God...it lets him know, that though we claim our faith is in him,our actions, and those words, prove otherwise ... How I wish we can understand how God feels ..

I have lived in South San Jose since January of 1971. A good friend of mine in the computer industry became homeless and the demographics of the homeless here in Silicon Valley are rather different than what many think. For example we find that 50% of the homeless are disabled or retired people on Social Security who cannot afford rent and are living in their vehicles. They don't want to be homeless they're not on drugs and unfortunately do not have the necessary financial wherewithal to leave the area and go somewhere else. We find that 20% of the homeless are mentally challenged and or using drugs. The final 30% are working adults that have jobs, however they cannot afford rent and they are living in their vehicles.

Sadly Art, you are correct, same here in BC, many people have said fuck the law and went into off grid living in what they call tiny homes, campers, motorhomes, homemade trailers etc. I was one of those people when I was told by a Dr. that he couldn't give me a light duty slip because he felt that my degenerative bone disease in my back was irreversible so he forced me to retire early from my working superintendent position from fear of being sued by my employer if he allowed me to continue working. The employer told me he without the letter their insurance could be compromised if they continued my employment and couldn't afford a nonworking supervisor. Fortunately I got through the hoops to finally get my pension and an opportunity came along where I could subsidize my CPP as a part time consultant for another contractor. I am an exception to the majority here in BC. 😉🍻

I was working and told her that god forbid i ever lose my job then we will apply for her. Well 3 years ago 160 of us were laid off. We went down to apply for her disability and we were told she cant get ssid because we waited 10 years to file. So basically we were penalized for not taking what we did not need at the time. I have now filed because she is 60 getting ssi and im not able to work due to health myself. We live in a park that charges 550 her check just covers that and electric and propane with no money left over. We are not bad people just tried to do the right thing and could end on the street if i dont get my disability. I worked 40 years low end jobs. But always worked. I hear a lot of people say bad things and it scares me that we could end on street. We talked about killing ourselves first.
