San Jose Green Waste - 2016

Filmed December 29th and 30th, 2016
Continuing the tradition of an annual San Jose Green Waste video.
The highlight of this year’s installment is one of Greenwaste’s old Volvo WX42/Heil Formula 5000s that I happened to stumble upon in Downtown San Jose. Unfortunately a New Way Sidewinder had swept the area for carts and green waste in general was relatively light so it was rather difficult to film. In addition is that diesel 2012 Peterbilt 320/New Way Sidewinder that was also in downtown, and a 2007 Autocar WX64/Labrie Automizer, a 2009 ALF Condor/Labrie Automizer, and two 2007 Peterbilt 320/Leach 2RIIIs in the Almaden Valley.
Still a great operation they got going here. One thing I noticed is that the automated trucks seem to be the primary trucks for carts and the rear loaders only seem to handle them on a select few streets or in “whoever gets there first” situations, which has drastically sped up the main rear load/loader crews. I would guess the old Volvo and Peterbilt Heils are up for replacement on the sooner side of things so I’m curious to see what the new trucks may end up being (I also believe the city’s contracts with their 4 haulers go up in 2018 so that may certainly play a role).
Thanks to all drivers as usual, in particular Jose on truck 230. Hard to believe it’s been 5 ½ years since I first filmed him • San Jose Green Waste -...

As a SJ native, it's refreshing to see some trucks I have not seen in a while. And to see some trucks that have never been captured before on camera, like that New Way and the Condor Automizer. Wish SJ had *mandatory* yard trimming carts, and split organics/garbage carts.

they actually did a pilot program in 2010 where all residences received a cart that was collected weekly, and loose stuff in the street was collected twice a month. People didn't like it so they kept the system as it is. I personally like the loose-in-the-street method far more; it cuts costs, is incredibly efficient, and essentially eliminates contamination. I saw that food waste pilot program; it will be interesting to see if it goes anywhere.

The fact that when GC is expanding to Milpitas later this year, and that they'll be using the same split IPL carts as their primary cart, the split cart probably worked well. It was also interesting that they didn't compost it, but they turned it into animal food. Interesting they did a pilot program for YW carts, I never actually received one back in 2010, so my memory might be very bland or it actually did happen. I personally think that, yes the loose-in-the-street is effective, and can cut on contamination, as crews can refuse piles that are visually contaminated, but yet again, if the residents are too lazy, the left over bits that are not collected, are gonna litter the streets.

You mentioned 'New Way' were you referring to like Magnum New Way rear loaders? Or something different? Cuz if you were talking about the trucks........I only saw the Leach alpha rigs in this video! Definitely not new way magnum! Lol. Cuz I work on both Leach alpha and Magnum New Way Rear loader packer trucks everyday! Personally I like the old fashion and new Leach rear loader garbage trucks!!

Great video! Nice to see that you paid another visit to the Bay Area! I never realized how many cool trucks GW has. That condor Labrie was very cool. So was the other Autocar Labrie. That Volvo Heil was very interesting. Thanks for uploading! Keep up the good work!

Nice wish we had that in New York State! Instead we pick up hundreds of thousands of heavy plastic yard waste bags and pails!! Homeowners don't realize or show that much appreciation of all the hard work us brotherhood sanitation engineers do all year round!!! Btw for this video.......what if it is expected to be very windy or a bad storm around there? Everything will blow around! What do they do? It's not the home owners responsibility! ?......

I love the sound of all these trucks, especially the Petes. They're a bit similar to ESD. I did not know they had the 5000s, that was a good catch. What are San Jose's other three haulers? I thought Green Waste did the whole city.

By "4 haulers" I meant all four residential haulers for all 3 streams -- not just yard trimmings. You'd be right to say Green Waste does collect the entire city but only yard trimmings. Sorry if that was confusing lol

Didn't those Formula 5000s used to be painted green? If so, I remember them well from my childhood.

I remember it now. Back in the 1990s, those Formula 5000s were the main RLs used by Green Waste. They started to disappear around 2002 with the introduction of the Heil Big Bites. I last saw one of the old Formula 5000s in 2005 on my grandparents' street. Now, the Big Bites themselves are falling victim to the Leaches, but it's REALLY nice to know one of the old RLs from my childhood is still around. Back in the 90s, they were all painted all green, which can be seen on the tire rims. While the 5000s yielded to Big Bites, the old loaders (I always called them "tractors", and still call Green Waste's method the "truck and tractor") soldiered on until around 2012, when they were replaced by newer loaders that were being used in Garden City/CWS areas. I last saw one of the old loaders in 2014, but its engine didn't sound very good, so I can see why Green Waste got rid of the old loaders. On another note, the New Way Sidewinder seems an awful lot like the Labrie Automizer.

Great work! Love all the amazing sounding trucks, but my favorite truck is the one at the beginning. That's a 2007 Peterbilt 320 Leach 2RIII, right? What was the truck number? Do you have a full video of that truck? And if you film it again, I don't like the loaders being in the way, it ruins the truck's engine sound, if you know what I mean. So if you film that truck again, please be sure to get engine and exhaust sounds. Please let me know ASAP.

One of my favorite series on KZread, awesome job on this year's! Great looking Pete/New Way, looks way better than the ones Palo Alto just got. Any idea if they still have that old Rapid Rail? The clip at 2:50 was great, and I was surprised at how full they were shoving the hopper on that one haha The Condor looked pretty slick from the angle you got it at 5:35. I always enjoy seeing them tip carts on the RLs. The extra large hopper is one of my favorite things about these trucks. Those green rims look sick on the Volvo. I sure wish there were more companies that bought painted rims these days. Curious, how do the loaders get back to the yard? Do they just drive on the streets or are there trailers parked somewhere for them? Really good stuff mixed into this one. Any idea why GWR didn't have to get CNG but Garden City had to convert their trucks (assuming they had to and didn't do it by choice?) Awesome job Tony!

Thanks Aaron! I always enjoy filming these. I can't say for sure, but as far as I know the San Jose yard hasn't gotten anything new lately. Last I saw the Rapid Rail was running county routes. Yeah, I've always been a fan of colored rims myself. haha they just drive which is pretty funny to think about. Unfortunately they don't get going very fast and are on surface streets the whole time, and depending on the part of the city often have to go quite a ways. I do believe I may have seen a picture of a rear loader with a trailer a few years ago though. I believe Garden City went CNG by choice; my guess is they have future plans for their trucks, maybe outside of SJ (they just recently won Milpitas, wouldn't surprise me if they end up there). Also, according to tiny labels on Greenwaste's trucks that can be pretty hard to see, their trucks (or at least the Leaches and CATs) are biodiesel. Thanks again!
