BART has the most hilariously indecisive routing of any system. "Extend to SFO, no extend to Millbrae, no we extend to both, no let's put one line to SFO and the other to Millbrae, no we put two lines to SFO and two to Millbrae." I can imagine many sleepless nights for the poor engineers on that project.

The primary reasons for changes between San Bruno, Millbrae, and SFO had to do with train car availability. And because SamTrans early in the project had no idea what they were doing. However, now because the fleet is growing overall with the introduction of the new cars, additional cars needed to extend the Red Line to SFO was made possible. It makes sense that one of the most important pieces of regional infrastructure, SFO, now has 8 trains per hour weekdays and 4 TPH weekends.

Fun fact: You can still see the remnants of Eureka Station when passing through the Muni Metro subway. The most obvious marker are the two gated portals to the surface where the streetcars used to enter/exit the Twin Peaks Tunnel, but if you watch the sides of the tunnel just prior to entering Castro Station (heading eastbound), you can see a couple of the old benches that marked Eureka's former platform.

Hey that's not useless at all! Maybe we can all sneak into the facility and manually extend the tracks by a few more feet. Once a Bart train's nose fully crosses the San Mateo County Rubicon, we can just claim "BART dominion" and force SM County to extend the line all the way to the Santa Clara border! 😁 Seriously though, why BART hasn't been extended in the median of the 101 I will never understand. It's literally right there and removing a lane from the 101 would actually reduce traffic up and down the Peninsula. I guess the Peninsula hatred of traffic is much weaker than their hatred of "poor people".

The Valley grew largely around the 101 not around the Caltrain corridor. A rail line in the median of the 101 would simply be closer to more employment centers than a rail line in the Caltrain corridor. This would layer onto the natural advantages of having single-seat rides from both San Francisco and the northern East Bay as well as from San Jose and the southern East Bay. But there are also built in advantages. For example, a dreaded highway median rail line would be fully grade separated from day one. It would necessarily have to replace highway lanes with rail which has at least 5x higher capacity and zero emissions. There are also connectivity advantages to having parallel rail lines that cover currently car-only areas but have robust transfer points. And of course, a BART ring around the Bay would allow for much better service on the existing BART alignment through San Francisco itself making Caltrain just another BART line.

The reason why they are trying different patterns is actually equipment availability. The old fleet was really getting old in the tooth and they had perpetual car shortages so they went to a different SFO service pattern to reduce the number of trains they would need. Then when the new cars started coming into service they switched back. Then it turned out that Bombardier messed up the cars and they had to reverse to the "car shortage" service pattern system-wide. Now the new cars seem to have been fixed and are entering service in force. So BART is switching back. There's nothing indecisive about this. It's just equipment management with an extremely constrained fleet.

The Key System was another victim of National City Lines (General Motors/Standard Oil/Firestone Tires). They never got their hands on Muni thankfully, though Muni still suffered from the must-switch-to-buses mania of the era, shutting down most of its lines including the absolutely vital B Geary line. This video doesn't show all the lines that were shut down, but the city was absolutely covered in them. The only lines that survived were the ones that used tunnels which couldn't ventilate bus fumes, and the J which used rights of way that would have been expensive to repave for buses. This let them survive just long enough that the tide could turn a bit to stop the tunnels and RoW from being turned into auto infrastructure like what happened to the easier-to-ventilate Stockton and Broadway tunnels.

Awesome video!! There were quite a number of additional streetcar lines in SF. 1941 there were 41 streetcar lines but that would have been a huge undertaking to delineate and research probably necessitating a dedicated video due to the complexity of the network. Most were replaced by buses using the same route number so the 31 Balboa streetcar became the 31 Balboa bus. The numbered streetcar lines were run by the Market Street Railway. The MUNI ran the lettered streetcar lines such as the B Geary, C Geary/California, D Geary/Van Ness, E Union, F Stockton, and the H Potrero in addition to the J Church, K Ingleside, L Taraval, M Oceanside, and N Judah that we know today. The Stockton tunnel was built for the E and F lines. The B and C lines on Geary were the last streetcar lines to be converted to bus in the late 1950s. The T Line uses a new letter not used before. Now, the MUNI is building a BRT on Geary although it really needs light rail service. There were also short lived MUNI lines such as the A Geary Park, the G and I Exposition lines, and the O Van Ness line.

The infrastructure for the Key System was actually already there long before -- it started in 1902, but the streetcars has to cross to SF via train ferry. There was an even older service called East Bay Electric. The big improvement in 1939 was the Transbay Terminal which let trains use the then-new bridge conveniently. It was very briefly also served by East Bay Electric and Sacramento Northern (You could ride all the way from Chico to downtown SF on it!), but after 1941 it was only used by the Key System.

Wow there's a lot here! Living in Emeryville (near Oakland/Berkeley), it's fairly depressing constantly traversing relics of the extensive urban rail system that used to exist here. You can see it all over the street layout and in so many little things. I work in an office that has photos of Berkeley pre-WWII: tracks up and down Shattuck and 40th St Oakland. The rusting skeleton of the 16th Oakland Station still stands today. There's a plaque for the Key Terminal at San Pablo Ave that's now a gated parking lot. A newly renovated museum near the Bay Bridge that was a Key facility. West Oakland itself is still littered with half buried street tracks from local factories. Photos at a local park of how the system used to extend over the hills to Sacramento. The area almost got a local rail revival in the 90s as AC Transit begged for regional planning dollars, but they were instead awarded to build the Dublin-Pleasanton BART line - that enabled more greenfield development way out on the edge of the Bay - and the plan died.

@@RaymondHng That's wasn't an apples to apples comparison. The eBART that ended up being built has nothing close to the capacity that regular BART would have had. Consequently, most of the costs will actually come when it's time to upgrade the line for more capacity. But it's always cheaper to built it right the first time rather than build and then rebuild correctly! The only real advantage that eBART had was that it was theoretically possible to easily extend the line via old freight track all the way out to Brentwood and maybe beyond. Perhaps one day linking up with the San Joaquins, the new ACE, and CAHSR on the Sacramento spur. Predictably, the host freight railroad blocked that pipedream just like everyone said they would. They always block any expansion of passenger rail if they can! And now we're back to square one with that toy line soon needing capacity upgrades. The reason why BART extensions are so incredibly expensive to build is that we never build any and no one gets any experience building them. We only do this about every 10 years. And every time by the time we need to do another extension everyone who knew how to do it is always already retired or moved on. We need to just commit to slow and steady system expansion - one station per year on any of the existing lines. That way we can get some economies of scale for a change!

The current F line existed in the 1980s as a seasonal summer service but had a slightly different routing... went from Transbay to Market... than up Market to Deboce, through the yard and down Church st to 17th and from there to Castro.

In the '90s, I worked swing shift at Fremont & Market, getting out just in time to catch the last F-Market which stopped right outside the front door of my building after looping through the Transbay Terminal, turning left onto Market Street, then left on Noe to 17th & left again down to Church, thence right & out to the barn at Balboa. With my stop at 24th & Church right in there. My workplace gave us late-shifters free taxi vouchers, but I only used them if I missed the F-Market and was always sad about it.

Wow! You managed to cover these networks while nodding to the Caltrain and VTA networks you'd already covered and wisely drawing the line at the Bay Area rail extensions (BART, Caltrain, Muni Metro, VTA, SMART) still awaiting full funding. Really good job here! I have never seen a pre-Metro explanation of Muni's streetcar system quite like that. I think the three cable car lines would be a good addition. Yeah, they're popular with tourists, but they are still basic commute for some folks, especially those living on Nob Hill.

agreed - and especially now with the question of restoring cable car service, it's important to recognize, because it's what makes the Cable Car network so special: it's an iconic tourist attraction, being so quaint and geographically specific, enshrined in our City's anthem, but _the people who live here use it every day as transportation._ it's not just an indulgence for world travelers, it's necessary for working-class people to get around in the Nob Hill/Russian Hill area. So yeah, put the money into it. I used to have a group of friends who lived in a little cluster in the Tendernob right around Leavenworth and Hyde, and that's how I'd get from work downtown to whichever of their places we were hanging out at that night. Good times.

The Bay Area was basically built on rail and has an extensive and very rich rail history. In fact, the pretty extensive rail system that you see here now isn't even 10% of what used to be there! So we did actually purge our rail transit just like all the other American cities. It's just that we had sooooooooo many lines that they couldn't remove them fast enough before the people started protesting. If you look at how extensive rail transportation was in the Bay Area, it's pretty crazy. You literally couldn't go more than two blocks without hitting another rail line in San Francisco or Oakland. We're gradually returning some of the lines, but the damage was so catastrophic that it will take us many decades just to get back everything that we lost.

Extending BART to Berryessa was REALLY a big deal, because it means that one can now circle San Francisco Bay by rail via a few rail system transfers at single stations. For example, from Millbrae, get on the VTA light rail (orange line, serving Levi’s Stadium) and travel to the Mountain View station, then transfer to Caltrain and take Caltrain north to Millbrae, then transfer to BART and take BART to Balboa Park, then transfer to another BART line to take you back to Milpitas (the BART to BART transfer could be made at other stations of course). What still remains is for BART to extend to Livermore, and also for BART to somehow extend to San Rafael to have a shared station with SMART, which currently serves the San Rafael/Petaluma/Santa Rosa corridor but will soon be extended farther north and will (later) likely be extended east to serve Napa, Fairfield, etc. Another big deal was the advent of the Clipper Card, which can be used on virtually all Bay Area public transit now, making transfers between systems SO much easier than previously.

Interesting to see that the early streetcar lines were really for streetcar suburbs. As some others noted, it is strange that the Key System goes unmentioned until it is finally connected with Muni via the Transbay connection. Caltrain is also missing, and we only get an offhand comment to bus service replacing some removed streetcar lines. When you fast forward through the 1950s to 1970s, what gets passed is the establishment of the BART authority, its initial construction and land acquisition. For the other missing transit pieces, I feel like this history gives us a history of the lines themselves, but not the reasoning for why service waxed or waned at any given point. For instance, streetcars were originally franchises awarded to private rail before being acquired by the City. Moreover, the late introduction of the J makes it seem like Bayview was underserviced -- but the Caltrain / Southern Pacific train line has been there since the early 20th century. Without the ferries, we also don't see how important ferries were to transbay travel before the bay bridge or how ferry commuting across the bay reaches into Marin, Sonoma, and Contra Costa counties.

Thanks for the most succulent survey of network evolution! I lived in San Francisco from 2004 to 2006 and had used each and every service providers in the Bay Area. I find the choice of diesel multiple unit (DMU) trains for eBART both bizarre and wrong. Using the diesel fuel seemed to contradict California's green agenda. I know that it's cheaper to build the system using the standard gauge and ordering the DMU from the maufacturer's "catalogue" (instead of custom built). BART ended up ordering hundreds of next-generation D/E rolling stocks to replace the A/B/C ones. Yet, it does cost more to build the separate maintenance yard and to train the technicians and operators specifically for DMU trainsets. Not to mention the volatile price of diesel fuel. Shame that San Mateo County voted itself out of financing scheme that would have allowed BART to serve the Silicon Valley better and more convenient than CalTrain and to complete the loop. I am no fan of CalTrain due to the cramped seats and harsh ride, especially when travelling at 70 mph. I never forgot the response from the conductor when the wagon was shaking so much at 70-75 mph: "Well, it's because of deferred maintenance." That was in 2005.

@@peteralbert1485 It's starting to look like Geary BRT isn't gonna happen, considering the shitshow that Van Ness BRT was (6 years to reconfigure a street!). To be honest I'm okay with that since Geary is the most heavily trafficked corridor in the entire city outside of Market/Mission, and it really just needs a goddamn subway.

@@NozomuYume Yeah...I would bet on the subway at this point, given where Link21's and Connect SF's proposals seem to be going lately: a subway under Geary and 19th Ave. In any case, the surface bus just got faster anyway with new BRT "lite" improvements completed along the Geary corridor.

@@blackchewy8435 I think we'll find out a timeline with Link21. It seems like the Geary corridor is the most likely route for the second BART tube. I guess it all depends on how time it takes to get the funding and planning and environmental review in place. How long would the actual tunnel itself take to build - ten years? BART's original tube and subways in SF and Oakland were built between 1964 and 1972.

I wish I knew why they named one M and another one N. Its so confusing over the announcement systems and its not much better on the displays when your eyes are as bad as mine. One takes me home and the other takes me to the middle of nowhere. There were so many free letters they could've used!!
