Great memories. Remember my first trip to San Diego and being blown away seeing people with their beach chairs,etc waiting patiently to cross tracks to beach.San Diego sta. Is a beauty.

1. My favourite 3:05, it ended up making the train out of Piedmont ( the Piedmont location is North Carolina) the pacific Surfliner 2) The EMD F59PHI we're in storage but remained in service[ about in the coaster commuter in North county transit city district ]

This train that you saw, is being use also in Europe, in Greece, they build hybrid rail out of 5 cars adding also the pantograph

It's derived from a diesel railcar that's made for branch line use in Europe. Germany, Denmark, Austria, Hungary, Bulgaria, Romania and Greece have them.

So many beautiful locations.. Sunset @6:16 was my favorite along with the Power move led by BNSF. Really enjoyed the video. Thanks for sharing .

Sweet shots! MTS is apparently retiring the Siemens SD100s (middle car on the S70s) at the moment. Will you be doing a farewell compilation video of them just like you did with the Duewag U2s?

Mostly all of them have been stationed or placed at the 12th & Imperial yard. Only about 13 of them left in service

Yep literally ace has them and Amtrak cascade and the Amtrak captal corridor and surfliner and others

Wow! I used to watch the trains coming in and out of Oceanside. Brings back a lot of memories of all of San Diego. Also would see them going through Camp Pendleton.

Really excited for the midcoast expansion. I'm sure you'll get some good shots when it's in regular service. I often ride the bike trail between old town and UCSD and love to see the coaster/surfliner pass by.

The new swoopy aerodynamic locos are cool, but I always like how the cab cars look super intimidating like a moving wall haha. I haven't been paying much attention to trains recently, have they phased out the P42? I use to see those all the time on the Pacific Surfliner.

Since they are still running Surfliner trains on a reduced schedule, they don’t need as many locomotives, so the P42s have all been returned to Amtrak for now. Thanks for watching!

Another outstanding video Mike. The old 645 diesels sound great on my car speakers. I noted that the Siemens locos hardly make any noise.

Some really great shots here! It’s hard to believe much has changed from when I started railfanning back in 2013. Although I’m not on the Surfline as much anymore, it’s still great to see all the upgrades as I know I would have better rides that are waiting to come.

They are barely used right now maybe in 2022 F59PHI will stop being used.

3001 and 3002 are both still around but have not been used much since the F40 retirement. They're on standby I think.

I went to San Diego like 3 months ago it was amazing! I saw an Amtrak Surfliner SC-44 and a Coaster SC-44 with the new cars! I was so happy!

Hey Mike, I just want to say I’ve been watching your videos for as long as I can remember. I love coaster and Amtrak and although it’s sad to see the F40PH and the P42DC’s go, I like the SC-44 “Charger”. When will you be visiting Metro North Railroad? Can you do it soon? If so, let me know what line and where.

The SC-44 charger looks modern and futuristic. I’ve seen it before in the Amtrak Pacific Surfliner livery and it’s diesel electric power unit sounds pretty good but it’s quieter than the P42dc and I could barely hear it when it accelerates.

What's up with the Surfliner having an Amtrak observation car at 9:34?

0:22 is my favorite clip

With future CAHSR planning to electrify Burbank to Anaheim for their trains, I wonder if and hope that electrification will continue down the Surf Line all the way to San Diego. Given this is the 2nd busiest passenger rail corridor in the country it would seem to make a lot of sense to do so. It could be done in phases, starting with LA to Anaheim then continue south to Laguna Niguel, then San Diego to Oceanside, and finally close the gap between Laguna Niguel and Oceanside. Unlike other rail corridors that are freight-owned, the Surf Line is owned between SCRRA (sans LA to Fullerton) in Orange County and NCTD in SD County, so electrification should be easier to implement. With the Caltrain corridor currently being electrified there should be a greater push to electrify the Surf Line too.

Everybody in San Diego and Oceanside, The 2 beach cities in California, are shocked to see the Coaster train models have completely changed, A long time ago, They looked very old, So that’s when they decided to have a demand of making changes on the Coaster trains, The interior of the new Coaster model is very comfortable. That’s all I could say since I haven’t went to one single Coaster train, Once. The only train I used to go to is a Sprinter train. Which is still a good train for people to travel in. Also 1 last thing. In my country, When people air travel, They travel in an airplane from just American Airlines, But in Mexico, They have more than an ordinary airline. Like Volaris, AeroMexico, and other airlines. (This is the longest comment I ever wrote down. So go with it)

What’s with all Capital Corredor San Joaquin cars on the Pacific Surfliner?

I couldn’t help but notice that it looks like the Surfliner cab cars have collector shoes on the right sides. Do you know what they might be for?

Not sure what you mean, but they are probably to activate the Automatic Train Stop equipment. Amtrak runs at 90 MPH between Oceanside and San Clemente, and the line speed is 90 MPH from Del Mar on north. FRA requires ATS for speeds higher than 79 MPH.
