    If a fire is large enough, next to a densely populated area the fire will need an Incident Commander, an operations chief and division supervisors for the basic geographical unit, the division, which is one portion of a fire's perimeter. If the fire escapes initial attack then it will need a plans chief, logistics chief, finance chief and more divisions. The ideal span of control on a fire is that no one be in charge of more than 5 resources or positions and it typically falls between 3 and 7 on a wildland fire. Supervising 300 engines would take 60 strike team leaders, who supervisor an engine strike team of 5 of the same engine type. Exceeding that span of control is dangerous as proved by decades of experience and analyzing. Search the topic "ICS" or "Incident Command System." Wildland fire management is more than meets the eye, unless you've been on some large fires. I'm retired from the U.S. Forest Service and firefighting was just one of my duties. I was assigned to over 120 fires in my career, in spite of only working 4 years in fire management at the beginning of my career. I learned a great deal and saw some interesting things.

    It is not the "Forestry Fire Department," it is the U.S. Forest Service. In this case the San Bernardino National Forest. When you video record fire resources responding to an incident you should be aware of the agencies involved, their function and jurisdictions. It would not hurt you to look up some of the designators on the sides of apparatus in the National Wildfire Coordinating Group "Unit Identifier Guide: Data Report." It explains all the 3 letter unit identifiers marked on the apparatus, such as "BDF," "BDC," "ANF," "CDD" and others in that area. Then when you see an engine with "AZ-ASF-E316" on the side of it you can tell it came from the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forest in Arizona and is Type 3 engine, Engine #6 on the Alpine Ranger District of that national forest. I enjoy knowing where fire resources are coming from. During the incredible 1970 California fire season I had to move over while driving on the 405 to let 5 Type 1 structural engines from the Boise Fire Department in Idaho roll Code 3 southbound near LAX. The bug hit me right there.

    @@pullovr When people make videos to inform others they should get their facts right. Fire management and suppression is not the main responsibility of the U.S. Forest Service. The agency's main responsibility is to manage the use of and maintain the integrity of wildland ecosystems. Thus timber, rangeland, recreation, wildlife and watershed uses are authorized by the U.S. Forest Service. Fire management is but one tool used to accomplish this goal, there are many others.

    Calfire usually sends a Battalion Chief, Air Attack, two tankers, one Copter, five type 3 engines, two dozers and two hand crews to a fire as Initial Attack units. Some of those looked like local government engines and some were federal resources. There is likely many others that were dispatched though.

    I watched the video several times & like it. You got great video of a great response. Some folks say too many chiefs & not enough Indians. Well, if enough chiefs arrive, one of them will assume command & put the others to work. People were commenting on excessive equipment being brought in such as the ladder truck. Once again, in the description it states a crash that caused a small vegetation fire. People need to understand that these are things that can quickly whip up into a large, out of control wild fire, & it is best to allocate the resources to getting that fire knocked down now.

    I wasn't expecting to see an emergency truck hauling a bulldozer. But this is in California, the brush fire capital of the country and for the people who live there, this is normal. They have seen too many brush fires and they know what a brush fire can do, so that's why you see such a large response.

  • @joeloveland6283

    @joeloveland6283

    2 жыл бұрын

    Battalion - in charge of 5 fire stations and a specific area covered by these stations District - in charge of several battalions and/ or a large geographical area, for example a county could have 3 or 4 fire districts within the county. Each district covered 5 or more battalions /small cities. Fire departments are based on a paramilitary command style.

    Each of the 50 states have their own laws on how emergency vehicles are to be equipped. Some like California requires only a steady red at minimum, others have different requirements and there are MANY different types out there that would make your head spin. I find that California pretty much leads the pack with sensible lighting laws and vehicle operation that is backed up with studies.

  • @joeloveland6283

    @joeloveland6283

    In California there are many areas where houses and other buildings are in or next to wildland /forest areas. The structure engines have greater pump capacity and hose size to use for structure protection as the fires burn through. Also basically all California firefighters are trained in both wildland and structure firefighting and can run a small brush fire from a structural engine if there is access. Finally, since there are more structural stations/engines, they are usually quicker to respond for initial attack and a large source of manpower. The wildland engines are lighter, higher set, and smaller so they can go off road and get into tighter spaces, but usually don't have the same pump and water capacity You can start a structure fire attack with a brush engine, but the are usually used for additional staffing for the fire attack. Hope that helps

    This was not only a fire. This was a vehicle accident that caused a fire. The ladder truck usually Carrie’s heavy extrication equipment. Both the type 1 engine and the ladder truck could be assigned to do structure protection.
