    This format is much improved. I noticed the overall length seems shorter than the old videos added together as you aren't having to do an introduction every time and re-cap what the other video had. It makes it more enjoyable and when researching a purchase it's great to be able see a single video. Thank you and keep it up.

    That's true. The only potential downside I see to the new format is that the multi-episode approach allowed for audience feedback to potentially shape the final episode in terms of what got covered. I have to work well in advance for this format to work, as even the text review needs to be finished.

    Dustin Abbott that makes sense. My guess is you will get a good feel for what viewers want in most reviews doing what you already do. Also when you use a lens extensively you are able to identify behaviors that viewers wouldn’t have predicted for better or for worse. One example I’ll offer is when you noted that the Tamron 35-150 is a potential alternative to a 24-105. I hadn’t considered that because they marketed the lens more as a portrait zoom and most reviewers repeated those talking points. Because of your review I rented one for my last international trip and got a lot of landscape shots I love.

    @@DustinAbbottTWI I like this new approach Dustin. Previously, I thought the videos were too long and went too much into technical detail. We really just care about IQ, AF and user experience. One suggestion I would make is to choose a different subject than the wall. I find the wall makes it difficult to assess IQ. I personally love the numbers/lines chart that Christopher Frost uses, which makes it incredibly easy to judge center or corner sharpness. Of course, you bring a wealth of knowledge and experience testing lenses which is priceless. So, if you can find a superior alternative to walls, like something with numbers or lines, that would make it easier to compare lenses imo.

    Awesome review Dustin. I have tried this on my A9 and A7R IV, it's a bit soft on the A7R IV but still very usable. The AF doesn't play nice with fast action or the tracking function but for 400 dollars its a great wide angle lens that doesn't break the bank.

  • @DustinAbbottTWI

    @DustinAbbottTWI

    4 жыл бұрын

    Tracking fast action with wide angles is a little tougher on Sony because (unless you are very close) there's no Eye AF tracking. Deeper depth of field makes this less of an issue, however, as most things remain in focus.

    Always love your through videos. They are both instructive and entertaining. I got the Samyang 18mm today and tried it out. I found that I preferred the Tamron 20mm more. I know there are 2mm difference, some say, maybe even 3mm, but I just wasn't that impressed with the colors, contrast, etc. Just hoping that Capture One will make a profile for the Tamron soon. I rarely shoot under 24mm and my other Tamron prime, 24mm works great and is extremely sharp with good pop. I'm just a stills shooter, rarely do video.I just had the tampon 20mm and Samyang for those extremely rare occasions when I shoot wider. But returning the Samyang to Amazon.

    New format was good. I have this lens, I bought it for exactly the reasons you stated. If I go walking I take my a7RIII with the 24-105 attached and all fitted to a befree tripod. I had the 16-35 GM but I always left it behind as it felt heavy for the little use it would get. so now I have Samyang 18mm, it just slips in a pocket. The 24-105 is good close up and I can always pop an extension tube in another pocket. If I feel the need to shoot longer than 105 then I have reach for the 100-400 gm and a bag. This little Samyang 18mm solved a problem for me.

  • @DustinAbbottTWI

    @DustinAbbottTWI

    What you've described is the biggest problem with larger, heavier lenses. It doesn't matter how good they are if you end up leaving them at home because you don't want to carry them!

  • @thscful

    @thscful

    4 жыл бұрын

    Hi Paul, I'd appreciate it if you can solve a problem for me. I mostly shoot landscapes at 24mm and really want to get the 24 1.4, but about 5-10% of the time, a wider angle like 18mm comes in really handy, and this Samyang solves that problem really well by being incredibly cheap and light. However, IQ is a top priority. I was considering getting the 16-35 2.8 GM or the Sigma 14-24, but they're so heavy and expensive, I'd much rather go with the 18mm + 24mm set-up, especially since I don't need to go wider than 24mm too often. I would really appreciate it if you'd be able to give me some insight into IQ diff bw the 16-35GM and the 18mm, especially in the corners. If the difference is negligible and only really noticeable at like 200% zoom, then I can get the 18mm. IF there is a significant difference, i.e. >15-20% improvement with the GM, then I"ll have to think about it a bit more.

    Your lens reviews really give us photographers a great tool giving us the information we really need. I am curious what the best IQ is in the 18mm range, does the 16-35 2.8 actually deliver a better image at 18mm? I'm assuming Sony will come out with some wide angle prime GM lenses, the 24mm is excellent but not quite wide enough for me. I already own the 15mm Laowa, I like it but sometimes it's too wide and it'd also be nice to have AF on a lens (although for landscapes I actually prefer manual focus).

I don't want spend a ton on glass so the Sigma 14-24 and Sony 16-35 are out. I wouldn't use them much and I know I'd regret it. @@DustinAbbottTWI Yes it is indeed. It is gonna stay in my bag. Small, light, so easy to bring along. It impresses me because of the sharpness on the edges. I was expecting less sharpness to the edges, but it is a quite strong performer. The vignet and disortion is there but easy correct in LR. The older Samyang lenses (50mm f1.4 or the 35mm f2.8 and f1.4) are not so good at the edges and give a not pleasant motion blur looking background. This one doesn't.

    It is crazy how accurate and let's just say "distortion free" this lens is while being a 18mm lens :O Love it! Also the price is mindblowing, such a great value. I'm so mad there is no similar alternative in the Canon line, even the EF 20mm f/2.8 is a piece of junk and more expensive. I'm hesitating so much between the Sony A7 II and the Canon EOS RP, because I really like Canon colors and the RP makes better 1080p and has more usable AF, while the A7 II has better dynamic range and the lenses which suitable for me are cheaper, and in this case, more exsiting. Even the Nikon D610 is in the competition (in my country those 3 bodies have similar price), but wide AF-S lenses are pretty expensive, and I really don't want to spend a lot of money for a one trick pony, because everyone say the video capabilities of that Nikon (or Nikon DSLR's in general) isn't really good for anything. I know some of you would say "just aim for the Sony A7 III because color and focus issues are pretty much solved with that body, even has decent 4K", but it is "out of my reach", I'm 29 years old, don't really have too many things, so even if I could get like an EOS R5 with 2 or 3 lenses, I definietly won't.

    Need some suggestion How is the samyang 18mm f2.8 on sony a7iii as compared to sony10-18mm f4 on a6400? I am planning to go on sony system. And i am confused between sony a7iii or a6400 because of that ultrawide lens. I have two sets in mind but I can’t choose which one to go 1. Sony a7iii+ tamron 28-75 f2.8+ samyang 18 f2.8 2. Sony a6400+ sigma trio + sony 10-18 f4 I mostly shoot in the range of 24-70 but sometimes I need that ultrawide lens(near 16 mm) for covering the whole landscape and some creative photos with unique perspective that ultrawide gives. I am not much into video or vlogging. Photo is my priority. F2.8 on full frame will give me sufficient amount of blur and low light capability. It would be much better to just zoom in and out on tamron than changing lens each time with the sigma trio. And it will be easier to carry one lens than carrying three lens while travelling. But If I go with a7iii and tamron 28-70 I couldn’t afford more than the samyang 18mm lens. If the samyang lens is as good as sony 10-18 I would easily go with a7iii but I don’t know if the photo quality of samyang is as good as the sony 10-18. since it is a cheap lens I have some doubt that can it give the quality like sony 10-18? It really depends what your needs and priorities are. I like the 18mm focal length better in many situations, though when you need to go wide, 14mm is fantastic.

    @@DustinAbbottTWI Ah, I see. You can always inquire about it to them though ;) But, they are probably wary/scared to send them out to reviewers, because it might get a very bad review, lol (heavy vignette, flaring and haze, low contrast... but at least it's pretty sharp and also very quick & quiet AF).

    Lenses like these Samyang primes and the two Tamron f/2.8 zooms for Sony are showing, that a full frame camera with capable but small lenses IS indeed possible. Maybe now the promises like "mirrorless will make systems more compact" are closer to reality.

    I have this lens and it works very well with the 24 Mpx A7iii. However I have found it to be bit soft on the A7r IV. But to be fair so does most lenses. (I admit to being a pixel peeper).

    @@DustinAbbottTWI Yes Dustin ;=) that's correct, just have to hold back the PP monster inside me. One other lens that actually impressed me even on the A7r IV is the new Sigma 24-70. It's really a work of art. I have never seen this kind of performance from any other 24-70 regardless of brand. Now I'm hoping for a new 70-200 Sigma Art for Sony with the same form factor as the Canon RF lens, but at half the price! ;=) / Thank you for all the effort you put in!

    @@efferoconsultingabprojects3500 That's the main problem with this lens from what i've heard. On the A7rIV it has some difficulty (corner not so sharp). The tamron 20 seems a better fit for the 61mp. Though, again, not everyone need a JPEG of such resolution. So i guess A7rIV + 18 is still ok for most of us.

When I've interacted with my audience the vast majority voted for this new format, and the feedback on this first release has been overwhelmingly positive. It sounds like you have the capacity for delayed gratification, which is rare on KZread.
