For the record, those who are criticizing the performance: You can tell that this is a wide range of students and a few senior students/masters who are all attempting to perform rather complex cuts requiring perfect cutting angles, timing and speed to accomplish, but they are still a slave to the laws of physics. Don't be harsh because they can't go through with a complex motion like the typical show-cutter can, those people train for years on those cuts alone to do them consistently. You never master the use of these swords in their given martial art, so don't be a douche and speak down to them for not having every damn move down pat, you couldn't do better after 5 years behind a handle on such a consistent basis, much less under the pressure of performance. I could take some of the best people from my dojo, put them on stage, and they'll perform like a rookie just because they get nervous performing in front of a crowd.

Other than that, in the rare occasions that a duel was handled via iaido, just like a knife fight, both parties died in the process. Meaning that anyone who knows anything about japanese swordsmanship wouldn't give the victory to any party in the practice of iaido, a martial art built around the idea of being able to defend oneself during an ambush or surprise attack. If you're dueling, your sword is already out unless you're an idiot, end of story. Maybe they'll be easier to defeat if their opponent goes to their final form and uses 100% of their power without holding back! But what if they had the power of true friendship on their side? What if they have faith in their fighting spirit? You get the point, so lets not go in to the second grader bickering over dumb anime tropes like the iaido duel.

Do it. You won't regret it. Start with a wooden sword. If you want to practice form, get a boken/bokken. If you want to train muscles, get a bamboo sword/shinai. It's not advisable to practice with metal swords. In inexperienced hands, it's likely to cause you to grind the flesh off your knuckles, or fracture a bone... not that I know anything about that (I do, and it hurts). I also personally suggest you get a good broom and sweep. A lot. Clean up everything around where you live. The sidewalk and the street. Sweep constantly to build strong back and chest muscles. It will help a lot.

It's a proven fact that the Japanese Katana is one of the deadliest swords ever created, in the right hands. I've seen testing on pig carcasses where one single slash cut 2 pigs in half cleanly and went 3/4 of the way through the third. I don't know of any other blade in history that can come close to this cutting power. And before anyone starts yapping off about where I'm from and that I'm biased, I'm Canadian!!! I've been in the martial arts for 30+ years, and I've used numerous different cutting weapons against many different anologs. Nothing cuts like a Katana!!! Hands down the best sword ever created!!

It's not the best sword. The fact that a curved sword cuts slightly better than a straight sword doesn't mean it's better. It might be the best sword for you but not for other people. For example I could kill way more people or cut much better beith a Han Jian than a katana. It's all about everyone's unique preference and style. Also double edged sword are capable of making many more cuts and techniques than a single edged sword due to it having a false edge. Which is why I prefer them. I am a strategist of many styles and I train 5 hrs daily (so you can trust what I say a little more).

Meh ain't no such thing as "best period". In tight confines a gladius would be more effective. In a field I'll take German zweihander. Katanas are great mid range swords but I'd still prefer a one handed sword because you have more reach than two handers.

They're not bad swords, but come on man. First things first, the forging technique that allows them to keep such a sharp edge also makes the edge brittle and prone to chipping. Yes, properly made and with proper technique, they're absolutely monstrous cutters, but so is any sword of the same time period with comparable blade geometry.

Cutting through tatami is already difficult enough but that last big one that must have been at least 10 inches in diameter was really impressive to watch someone cut clean through with one freaking strike. That’s some serious concentration and some serious skill that man had to cut through that.

That bend killed me to see :) been there a few times. It happens when you get too greedy for your tier ;) The multiple mat one was an impressive effort, he didn't get through, but he definitely did good. That last one was impressive, but it might not have been as impressive as it looked, judging from the way it looked and sounded when the cut happened. Didn't seem to have much mass or resistance to it (to be expected when rolling one as big as that). It was kind of sad though, to see the disappointment on the white haired man's face when the mat stuck to his sword. It happens to the best of em, but I understand the pride thing in front of an audience. It's one thing on the dojo floor, but another in public. All in all, I loved it. I don't know why, but these kinds of video's are some of my favorite on youtube. The inspire more emotion than most other video's... that and the sword envy...

Half of these guys are using extremely thin sheat metal swords which are not authentic and only made for show cutting like this as it makes it easier to slice through the tatami and takes less skill to accomplish. Loving the form of the older gentlemen that use proper swords though as you can see the technique has been practiced so many times theire bodies could almost do it on theire own from pure muscle memory even as age seems to take it's toll and reduces theire reaction time and hand eye co-ordination.
