The Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra and S22 Ultra -- seeing these at a distance and even *using them*, you've really gotta know where to look to tell one from the other.
Which makes this one of the more unusual comparisons we've done so far. Obviously few people will be upgrading directly from an S22 to an S23 -- though if you're in Europe, there might be one big reason you'd possibly wanna consider that.
For everyone else, maybe you're tempted between the very latest Samsung flagship.. and a cut-price deal on last year's version. So let's get into the differences between these two.

I agree. My s22 ultra is doing well and I got it since launch. Might consider the 24 but if it's not too big a upgrade then I'll slight stick with the s22 ultra. The camera is great and battery isn't a problem for me.

Exactly my s22 ultra is absolutely awesome as it was from day one and it's even better with all the updates the camera right now is better than the s23 ultra camera it's just had so many updates put them side by side The pictures are better on the s22 I don't care what anybody says you can see it when you put them side by side I usually change my phone every year at least if not every 6 months but I'm keeping this at 22 ultra for a while this thing is awesome

Have both and SD versions.. S23U has much better speskers, runs cooler, SOT gains are approx 3 hrs average, UFS 4.0 makes read and writes faster, is less slippery due, the front camera does 4k@60 and digital zoom is actually useful to about 30x .. I'm sure there's more but that's all I could recall from experience.. Has it been worth upgrading from a 512GB S22U to a 512GB S23U ? A resounding yes for me!

Except for battery (and I still can't understand why 10-20 percent more or less is big deal as most of us always have power source at home, in the car, at work) there really isn't anything S23 Ultra can do that S22 Ultra can't. I'd argue that even those with S21 Ultra should think twice before "upgrading". Don't fall for hype, people, "honest" videos are far away from real life usage.

I am seeing decent battery life with my S23U but I've gone from a 3 year old N20U (Exynos). You do have a point, reviewers are always amazed by [this year's model] vs [last year's model] battery life (now we can get a full day!) well woop, but I'm fairly sure they were saying the same thing the year before.

@@mixerfistit5522 I've upgraded from Note10+ to S22U and then got a good deal (at least that's what I thought) and got S23U. (I am in Exynos region so I guess I expected miracles). Let's say it this way - as I'm not a gamer there is nothing much these phones can do (except 120Hz) that Note10+ couldn't. Vibration motor is terrible, I still miss a lot of calls and notifications. Camera still suffers from same old Samsung stuff (shutter lag, unpredictable results, choppy video) that have been present on each of their devices I used. I actually think camera is the weakest part of this phone, and I'm not sure why Samsung keeps ignoring the problems for years now. Side by side Note10+ picture vs S22U vs S23U - I really can't see some big difference. For those who buy the phones mainly because of cameras Iphones and Pixels are still better solution. All in all - it's a good phone, but nothing more then that. Hardware potential is great and I think with some software polishing this could be great device, but hey, there are already leaks on S24 series, hype train once again...

@@udruzenjejazavaca When I went from a Huawei Mate 20 Pro to the N20U, aside from the screen size, it felt like a downgrade. That phone was very strong for it's time. As for cameras, I'm yet to find a circumstance where the 200mp and 50mp camera seeing are any use. Same with 108 on the N20U and to be fair whatever max settings were for the Huawei M20P were a similar disappointment. And that makes sense to me. My half decent Sony hyperzoom camera has about 12mp. It's the sensor size that makes the difference, surely that's where the future lies less pixels, more sensor. That said, I do find the battery an improvement, I'm fairly confident it outlasts my N20U (when it was new). I have battery limited to 85% as I charge overnight and that seems to be enough for most days, but I may change this policy with the 45w charging now. I think it'll be better to partially charge before sleep while catching up on some YT shorts (bad sleep habits!) and then fully charge in the morning allowing it to discharge over the day. I doubt it makes much difference though, my N20U was always charged to 100 every night for 3 years and although it's noticeably suffering now, I could still get through a days work and can charge enough on the drive home to get me through the whole day usually. Had I not found a deal on the S23U I felt was good enough, I'd still be using my old Note - and I still miss my M20P. Oh and regarding the vibration, I agree, I always miss mine and same with the N20U. My colleague still has the top N10 and not sure if it's the surface he leaves it on, but I can hear it vibrate from downstairs

@@mixerfistit5522 yeah, me too. I wouldn't pay the full price (got the free earbuds too) just because Samsung phones lose their value very fast. After more then 2 years...well it's better to give device for free then to sell it (no trade in in my country). I don't use 200mpix and 50mpix, as much as I don't use 8K recording. I can't really see the difference. Instead, I'd prefer "regular" 12mpix option with no shutter lag. Taking pic of anything that's moving (kid, pet) is still a mess and I use it more compared to pictures of flowers and buildings (which are main part in each "honest" review). Using Pixel 7 and 13 Pro Max - I know it can be much better. I think last real no compromises no "we will fix it with update" Samsung flagship was Note 9. People still use it. After that..well let's say Samsung knows that fan base is big and anything will sell. A lot of experiments and "it's good, BUT..." devices. S10+ had that pill cutout for "better selfies" - it was gone on Note10+ just after few months. S20 Ultra "camera with phone" ,as advertisments said, had that giant camera hardware error. Note 20/Ultra, presented after few months had different camera system. But no 120Hz and highest resolution at the same time feature. If you want that - you'll have to buy next model. And so on and so on... I think quantity of Samsung phones just ruins the quality. And, in last few years, competition is pretty pretty close, probably even better.

I went from the Exynos S22 Ultra to the S23 Ultra. As a fairly heavy user the longer battery life makes a huge difference to me and that alone makes the upgrade worthwhile, no more battery anxiety! @Philip Weiss Well for me it was the battery life that was the main thing. Lasts a lot longer. I feel confident taking the phone out for the day now and not worrying about battery. Didnt feel like that with the S22 ultra, always took a spare phone. If I hadn't been bothered about battery the upgrade probably wouldn't have been worth it for me. But it does feel generally faster navigating screens and opening apps and browsing with mobile data. Don't do games so can't comment on them. I haven't measured the difference so performance wise its a fairly subjective view. Battery efficiency wise probably about twice as long.

Chargers maybe all over the place and always finding outlet may be easy for you but if you're always on the go, don't like using cars, and would rather spend more time out and about instead of tethered to a charger then longer battery life might be a bit better than shorter life with quicker top ups. Admittedly this is where Samsung's dope wireless charging power bank comes in clutch. As every other phone, batteries on our mobile devices depletes over time. But there are factors that cause our phones' battery to degenerate faster than others such as usage, routines and most of all, temperature. I was an S22 Ultra user myself, and like you, I was having great battery life at launch. However, 3 months after I bought it, I notice significant decrease on battery life from 7-8 hours SOT, to 5-6 hours. After a year, it got to the point that the phone could not last me a day and I would have to charge it mid-day. I then attributed this to the poor thermal management of the SD8Gen1 chipset which is known to have poor thermal optimization and overheating. As you know, Li-ion batteries easily deplete if its frequently exposed to heat, hence the quicker battery degredation on S22U. I then decided to upgrade to S23 Ultra mainly because of the promise of better battery life of the 8Gen2. (and the free storage upgrade at launch). Almost 3 months into this phone and I can attest that this is way better than S22U comparing the same period. Im still consistently having 8-9hours SOT even after 3 months of intensive use. Again, I attribute this to the improved thermal management of the more efficient SD8Gen2 which resolved the overheating issues of 8Gen1. Therefore, I am confident that S23U will have a longer battery lifespan compared to S22U mainly because of efficient heat management. And while the looks of both phones barely changed, I must say that when it comes to the chipset's thermal performance, S23U is leaps and bounds better than S22U.

Depends on how much of a priority battery life is. If you can live with a single day and maybe switching to the Light performance profile then a refurb S22 Ultra would be a great way to save $600.

Smartphones have peaked. This is not interesting anymore. Im satisfied with my iPhone 13 pro max. Im not a fanboy, ive been using both android and iphones, hell even windows phone. Basically ive had a new one each year since the Lg Optimus 2x (best phone ive owned) But what ive picked up is that an iphone is built to last more than one year. All my androids have basically given up within that year.

Having had the S22U and now the S23U, it is evident that they are 95% the same phone. The differences are the primary camera and the chipset. The 200mp on the S23U has disappointed me, but it is year one, so it will undoubtedly improve with updates. But compared to, say, the one-inch 50mp of Xiaomi and OPPO, Samsung's take is rather bland. The only reason I changed was that I had a dumpster-diving Exynos S22U, a slow, stuttering mess with terrible RAM management and battery life, barely making 4.5 hours of SOT. Worst phone I have ever owned, and I could not wait to trade it in. It is shameful that the S22U was so bad, and even the Snapdragon version was sub-par. Qualcomm, no doubt overwhelmed with complaints from OEMs, dumped Samsung Fabs, and now TSMC SD8G2 is what we should expect. It is ironic that the S23U is getting so much fandom praise when it is better because Samsung was sacked as the chipmaker! The S23U is excellent but so are all flagships in 2023 as all no longer use Samsung-made chips.

All that matters is that 23 is greater than 22. Samsung could release the same phone every year and just increase the number by 1 and id pay for it. Id ever pay if they increased the price. Why? Because im not poor and i will spend my money to have a higher numbered phone than some brokie.
