Samsung Galaxy Ring Announcement: A Deeper Look

Спорт

Samsung has just announced their Samsung Galaxy Ring, and with it, provided approximately zero details, except a pretty picture. But sometimes, a pretty picture speaks quite a bit.
To set the stage, literally, they had just finished talking about a handful of Samsung Health software updates that’ll be coming over the remainder of the year, including a daily readiness type score, as well as slightly more detailed sleep tracking. At that point, the screen went to black, and the announcer said:
“And today, we’re taking the possibilities of Samsung Health to the next level, by bringing Samsung’s Health cutting innovations to a brand new form factor.
We’ve created a powerful and accessible health and wellness device, here to change the shape of future health like only Samsung can. Meet the Galaxy Ring.”
We see a ring rotate briefly in a few directions over the course of about 8-10 seconds with no voice over or further information. However, there's more than meets the eye here.

I always thought it would be Apple that would take on Oura but it turns out to be Samsung. Although I get a "Active lifetime membership" for being an early adopter of Oura, they blackmailed me into buying a new ring to get that "lifetime membership" (the 'Active' sounds like it might not actually last a lifetime) so I would welcome anything that hurts their greed moving to a subscription model. I like mine but can't recommend anyone pay monthly for it after forking out for the hardware. And if anyone from Oura is reading this: one shitty turn deserves another so there you go.

Is there any advantage to having these sensors on a ring compared to a watch? For example, could it be technically easier to get better oxygen measurement with a ring compared to watch or the other way around? If there is no technical benefit that would enable better tracking for oxygen, heart rate or sleep, I guess any ring wouldn't be very interesting to someone like me who already has a watch doing these things.

Minus the intense battery degradation, I love my Oura ring. However, I also wear a whoop band mainly for the fact that it has an alarm that works in conjunction with the sleep tracking. If Samsung manages to pack a tiny vibration motor in there, I’m jumping ship. Likewise, if Whoop would just give us the option to track steps, I’ll just wear that. I don’t really care for the strain score as after 3 years of wearing it, I still have no idea what it means lol. I know my Apple Watch can do it all, but it’s big as hell to sleep with and I mostly wear mechanical watches when I’m not working out. I just want one of these companies to do sleep, alarm, and steps!

Whomever joins the party will congratulate everyone including that neighbors, even if they just moved in yesterday, and thus have nothing to do with keeping me alive. I wouldn’t trust Samsung to track my health data. I’ve tried several versions of the Samsung watch. The exercise tracking is absolute garbage. It’s a grab bag of issues. Sometimes no gps lock. Sometimes gps lock but doesn’t actually track distance. Or it just stops in the middle of the run. Every version of watch has the same issues…
