Earlier this year Samson released their new USB/XLR compatible microphone, the Q9U.
In my new video I wanted to put the mic through its paces and find out how it stacks up compared to the Shure SM7B: an industry standard broadcasting microphone.

Honestly, the Samson sounded pretty similar to me using both XLR and USB. Sounded very clear and, even in the kitchen where there was some echo, it was still solid. I've been using the Blue Yeti for almost a year and have no issues with it but the review really sold me on the Samson Q9U as a potential next microphone. I couldn't really pick up on much (if any) difference between the Q9U and the SM7B so, based on nothing more than price point alone, the Samson is a clear winner for me!

It just sounded muddy to me
James, great job. To answer your questions, 1st I think the XLR actually sounded a bit better than the USB-C interface. However the USB-C wasn't bad at all. In the kitchen there was a little bit of an echo but I didn't really hear the background of him making a coffee nor grinding the beans so that sounded good in a "less than ideal" recording location. Lastly, in all honesty, I thought the Samson sounded better than the Shure in the sound booth. There might be experts out there that say I'm crazy but to me, the Samson sounded great. For a third of the price, why go with the Shure? That's my opinion on your review. Thanks again.

Thanks for your input!
Good review, James. The mic sounds fine, though to my ears, sounded a bit nasal, but perfectly listenable. Versatile with USB and XLR. SM7B clearly a lot better and brighter. My only comment on the Q9U was handling noise. Seemed to pick up every time you touched the table (office, kitchen and booth) through the mic stand, with a little too much rhumble in my opinion. If I were listening to a podcast/broadcast with that going on, I would probably tune out!

Well observed. I think Shure may have a built in shock-mount, whereas the Q9U perhaps doesn't - I agree thats noticeable. Not that you can mount it on a shockmount either due to the form with built in attachment.
I think this actually sounds just as good 👍
Awesome mic. great overview.

Thanks, glad you enjoyed!
Great review of the Q9U. Did I miss something or was the only comparison of the two mics in the studio (ideal recording environment)? The price comparison also makes a difference...but I'm just getting my legs under me.
Great job on your review of the Samson vs Shure. In my honest opinion the Samson sounded better than the Shure even in a location that isn’t conducive for recording a podcast. Thank you very much.

Thanks for sharing your opinion!
Would you recommend this or a condenser mic for podcasting? I think dynamic is preferable, based on the videos I’ve watched, but I’m not always 100% in front of the mic.. I do sometimes drift away slightly for research during recording. Any help very gratefully received, thanks!
imho, xlr sounds a bit hotter and cleaner. Kinda wish they didn't bother with the usb but that's just me. I only use audio interface for the best quality. The SM7B does sound better to me I'm afraid. Was hoping the Q9u would be a match but very close. I'd save up for the SM7B imo
Just wondering why you used what looked like a Rode windscreen on the Samson in the soundproof booth but not outside ;is it another plosives magnet like the Shure MV 7 ?

The windshield was supplied with the Samson Q9U
