Kaeshav(my son) really enjoys his lessons with Dr.Hall.He's been learning the piano for 2yrs 9 months and would never have attained what he has accomplished without the excellent teaching and dedication of Dr.Hall!Highly recommend his Skype lessons.

You son is very talented
An old video but very suitable for today's Coronavirus outbreak situation as many teachers cancelled taking piano lessons in person. A setup as relevant in 2020 as in 2014.
Lol dr. Hall isn't afraid to crack the whip when a lil tyke gets out of line! Great video, great idea, great lesson.
I've been debating whether or not to try skype lessons, and the insights this video gives are great. It will take time to get the money, but I'll definitely try this out in the future.
Thank you! Such a great lesson and set up! Thank you for sharing it!
That sure was fun! I'm impressed with how well that young man plays! WOW!
I love the way how you teach
Excellent idea not to mention that you are such a remarkable interpreter and in depth conoisseur congratulations and best of lucks
Thank you for this video, Dr. Hall!
Bon sentiment de partage, sur ce coure harmonique gamme . bravo !
I stumbled upon this video just to get idea for music distance learning/teaching and these exercises really inspired me. Great!!!
Really thanks for sharing your sample lesson. I am preparing online lesson for my student in Australia. It is so helpful and good information for me.
Hi Dr. Hall, I've learned more from watching your video's on method of teaching via webcam than any other source that I've searched so far (there've been MANY). I've been approached by established online schools, but they all seem to have a rather rigid curriculum, which. My philosophy is such that- naturally, there are many parts of any choice method (Alfred, Bastien, Hal Leonard, etc), in addition to scales (which you've given me some brilliant ideas). And I'm a stickler for my C.L. Hanon exercises. Up until now, I've strictly taught piano and voice privately in-person. Due to the nature of my spouses career with the Army, I find us moving every 2-5 years- difficult to build a traditional student clientele, which was initially how I began exploring piano instruction via webcam. I do feel, regardless of "method" (Alfred, etc), that the instruction yeilds the absolute best results when the instructor, while using the method book collection of choice (I've always been partial to Bastian, but not "married" to it), that being rigid- following only what the different books in a collection- is extremely limiting, and that it makes all the difference in the world to model my program for the individual student- yes, follow the Bastien method, but perhaps, when weaknesses present, pull from my library, and utilize material outside the Bastien books. I think all instructors do this on some level, but I find, while I do require students to work through the books, the longer I instruct, If I choose pieces, with the input of the student, that said student tends to learn more like a dry sponge being dropped into a pale of water, and less like a soaked dish rag, being dropped into a sink of water. I'd love your thoughts on that. Also, between Skype, Facetime (apple), Messenger video chat, and the google videochat app- while this video showcases skype, do you find it to be consistantly the best quality audio/video in general between the major no-cost video conferencing services? When your students give recitals- how, exactly, does that work? I know yout students are all over the world, do they each have seperate recitals, or do you encourage/require participation as a group, or in groups determined by level- and if in groups, could you briefly tell me how i could set up a remote group recital? If that's even possible. Lastly, I have a Yamaha P-2 Studio upright in which I practice, myself, and also give lessons. In addition to piano and voice instruction, I'm also one of the (apparently) very rare combination pianist/tuner/technician, which enables me to constantly keep my yamaha studio piano very well tuned. However, I also recenly bought the Yamaha DGX 660 digital portable grand with all 3 pedals. Do you think I should consistantly teach on one or the othet, or perhaps mix it up a bit? Thanks VERY much for your time in making the highly informative videos, and for any insight you may be able to share with me on my questions. Yours truly, CJ Mitchell Cjmitchell.ent@gmail.com
simply amazing!
I love ur piano, Mr. Hall.
i really admire your finger technique....quiet fingers and yet so powerful...
Amazing
Well done Kaeshav! How long has he been having lessons? :) Great stuff
Got you just random you tube , you came up to my desk, and there you are (hope my english is fitting, we speak Dutch in the Netherlands, goodbye from Albert.
I realise this is an old video but still interesting. I would like to see this kind of lesson with a fairly new beginner. I am looking to switch to online teaching because of Coronavirus but I'm not convinced it will be as successful as face to face lessons.
Please provide the spec for computer, camera, tripod etc... thank you it is useful for teacher like me
Wow the boy got skillz! :D
I suppose if the client had an additional camera over their shoulder that would be an added bonus (but more technical set-up and know how). If you had a new client who wanted to set up, how much out lay for a one or two camera set up including the monitor would you estimate?
That's quite impressive congrats !!! I have a case where a student hear my piano with a distorted sound, how would you fix that?
Skype has builtin noise cancellation for any mic its setup, it cut off the music when I played, how to disable noise cancellation on mic? I tried but there is no way I can do it, checked online , many users has the same problem on audio , please help.
Hi Dr. Hall, I am a teacher from VA and looking for a stand what you use for overhead view. Would you be able to give me the brand name of it? Thanks for help!
AWESOME!
I really need to start teaching, problem is, after doing all my grades I’ve completely forgotten everything. I just play pieces by ear nowadays.
Very cool, how do you toggle cameras?
What methods are you using to teach scales and warm-ups?
Please can you tell me what cameras models of your setup, and how you toggle or switch cameras in Skype. Also what kind is the tripod with extension arm? I'm planing to teach camera repair on Skype and need similar setup. Thanks, My name is Pablo

Hi, I see it has been asked but not answered, but can you please show how to switch between the cameras, thank you?
I learn the piano by myself. How do you show the piano on the roof ? Do you use a program ? i want to know that how do you show the hand arms and elbos.
Where could I find a tripod to hold my webcam like the one you have that shows the students your piano?

How much for your lesson is it yearly
There's so much you cannot do over an online lesson: How do you accompany your student? How do you play their left hand as they play the right hand? How do you count at the same time as they play? Something are quite challenging too like: How do you correct the hand position in young children? How do you teach a student to follow a metronome? How do you enforce a specific rubato as their playing? Anyone have any suggestions? Lets figure these things out :)
My friend told me about you from London
May I ask what the reason is he has a blanket over his piano, is it for protection? Also is it a special blanket or just any old one?

Usually we do this to protect the piano from getting to much dust 🙏🏻 🎹
I have 3 questions: 1. How do you have recitals with students that are in different countries? What other alternatives are there? 2. Do you have tips on how to get past the note learning/ keyboard geography stages with beginning students through skype lessons? I find video is easier with students who already know the notes. 3. What do you do if a bad connection interferes with the lesson? Reschedule...or refund? I am starting to do online lessons now. :) Thanks B

1. I don't have recitals 2. It's the same as in-person lessons. I don't see any difference. 3. Reschedule

It is recommended that you have either 1 or 2 sessions per week
Isn't there a way to connect your piano to skype so that the piano on "the other side" plays the same as yourself?
@BachScholar
9 жыл бұрын
+CubingPianos Yes, you can do that if both have the same software and if both pianos are equipped with the hookup that is needed. But this kind of technology is a hassle, is expensive, and is not even necessary to conduct effective lessons.

Hey there. Love this video and your temperment with your student your so chilled :0). I just wondered what programme you used to allow a two camera angle? I am going to be taking all my face-face students online with the coronoavirus and don't know how to get the two angle shots on Skype.

I don't think you can anymore on Skype. I don't toggle any more between views because it doesn't work (at least the last time I tried it). I just use the side view now exclusively.

BachScholar there is an app called as ‘many cam’ . It helps you to have upto 4 cameras streamed simultaneously with the individual licence . U can resize the windows, design your own layout too. I’m using that since COVID and it’s wonderful. Just like yours I have an overheard camera and a side view. Greetings from India 😁
