Sample Breakdown: J Dilla - Last Donut of the Night (Donuts)

This instrumental analysis took forever to finish. I was using the wrong sample, since it has to be the mono version. But I had to finish it because it is undeniably one of the best beats of all time!!

This is another one of the Dilla beats I was only able to finish the breakdown because of yall help on the "J Dilla is mind blowing" video! I am still stuck in a bunch of beats like Nah Champa, but I am slowly finishing the beats I've been stuck on for months! Glad I was able to finish this one. It is one of the best beats of all time IMO. I'm hella busy until Nov. 7th, so the next video will be just a chill essay video, where I'm trying some different edits on... but after that get ready for some C O N T E N T :)

I really appreciate you going to these lengths to break down these beats, but take it from someone who's been trying to understand these beats for at least 7 years. There is no understanding dilla beats, he's doing something next level on every beat. Even on this beat there is more to it that what you broke down, the guy is even more than a genius. He's doing shit on every beat that would make you wanna rethink your entire life. One hint I'll let you know, is the double layering of the sample he's using, using ASDR to just take the drums to boost the original drums in the sample.

Hands down my favorite Dilla beat - Its so damn emotional and its one of the final beats on a fantsastic album. I personally feel that the beats on donuts especially beats like airworks,, workinonit and time and many many others are some of the best and most creative sample Based beats ever created. I also think that donuts and the beats i just mentioned were not just Dillas final Goodbye to his fans and family, but a memento to beatmakers and DJs to remember. The thecniques used on this record by Dilla is phenomanal and there is still so much to learn from them for todays producers… he was and still is The king of beats imo

This beat was finished the day before he died. The man could no longer stand up or talk but he made this haunting instrumental as a final goodbye

I felt so much catharsis finding the version of the song he used on KZread last summer. I, for years, just wanted to know where “ooh baby, baby” came from on Last Donut

Congrats on finally getting to finish this one. Weidly I assumed you'd already covered this one. It's the small nuances I appreciate like "has to be the mono version".

it was the reason I was stuck! This suuuper rare mono version is the only version where the vocals are isolated from background vocals. Dilla for sure dug a lot in them crates

If not this year, early next year I will do a mixing video for these style of beats. THEN the goal will be for to really try to get as close as possible. I know it won't ever be one to one, but the idea is to learn and teach how we can get that feel right !

Funny thing with Dilla is that there so much unreleased stuff, he worked so damn much in such a short period of time, that every year I find something new!! Maaan one day I will try to do a top 10, but it will be damn near impossible for me to decide the order

Its a song Dilla previously flipped for "Fall in Love" called "Diana in the Autumn Wind" by Gap Mangione. The horns Madlib used come in right before the synth melody Dilla used. Amazing song used in two of my favorite tracks. Dilla and Madlib the 🐐
