Sammy Hagar Says 'Eddie Did Horrible Things To People’ On 2004 Van Halen Tour

In a recent conversation with AXS TV, Sammy Hagar reflected on Van Halen’s 2004 reunion tour, describing it as the most harrowing experience of his life. He attributed much of the turmoil to Eddie Van Halen's battle with addiction, which severely impacted his behavior.
“It was a nightmare. Eddie's actions were beyond appalling. He treated everyone terribly and acted like a complete lunatic. I’ve never encountered anyone like that before… at one point, he tried to smash the windows of a G5 airplane with a wine bottle while we were at 4,000 feet… and it wasn’t even our plane; it was a rental!”

A friend of mine was invited to a backstage party after a concert back in the late 80’s He claims at one point Eddie had gotten drunk and was fighting with Valerie Beetunelli. Next thing he knew a beer bottle was flying through the air and busted against the wall beside Valerie. He what was really screwed up is that he was shocked, but when looking around everyone else was acted like it was no big deal. As if it was common behavior.

Not really it's called rockstar or frontman syndrome. Most guys who get that kind of fame it goes to their head. Both Eddie and David were said to have giant ego's and hard to work with. What's bad is Sammy was originally brought in to counter how bad David had acted. Then he allegedly deals with Eddie's issues as talented as he was.

I agree with Sam. I saw this tour. It was the first time that VH ever played in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. Ed was clearly “plastered”, didn’t give a puck about anything or anybody. He was yelling at his guitar tech, the sound guy that was responsible for the stage monitors, because he felt that he couldn’t hear properly. During his “supposed guitar solo”, he got his guitar into a constant feedback and let it feedback for almost 10 minutes, while he was bent backwards, on his knees and sleeping backwards. Then, when he was going to change guitars or just didn’t like one, he would take it off and “throw it at the guitar tech” like he meant to hurt him. Also, at the end of the concert, he walked over, stould in front of a stage security bouncer and just jumped backwards at him. It was lucky that the security guy was big and he caught Ed around the waste, feet above the ground and I’m pretty sure that he told Ed to “behave”. This was the worst performance that I had ever seen him. I know his mom died shortly before, but he had no right to do what he did to his stage people and us - the fans that night. He must have been going through some severe turmoil in his brain. I felt for Sammy, Mike and his own brother that night, how embarrassing it must have been. It was the first time in 7 times that I saw VH, and I felt ripped off.

We actually saw something similar with Diamond Dave at a concert where he was clearly plastered before taking the stage and had an open bottle of Jack Daniels (maybe?) which he sprayed out on the first few rows of people. It didn't seem like he was really into it that night and it was a little disappointing.

So to answer your question, if I were told I had cancer, I'd be majorly bummed out, but I doubt I'd become as batshit insufferable as he reportedly did. Of course, had he not also been a lifelong tobacco addict, he might have avoided the tongue cancer altogether, thus rendering the question moot. (Ed believed the tongue cancer was caused by the metal guitar picks he would hold in his mouth while tapping. Maybe so, but there's no established science to support the claim. Chain-smoking, on the other hand, is a well-documented cause of tongue cancer.)

I read somewhere Ed saying he became so used to the drinking for so many years he couldn't relax on stage when he tried to stop drinking, and stage fright nearly took him over to the point where it affected his playing in a major way... it took some major getting used to for him. VERY SAD! From that point to the end of his life was a very sad ending to an otherwise near-brilliant career. I hope Edward made peace with his maker before passing. I too was at the Hamilton, Ontario show in 2004. It was a shocking decline from the Toronto concert months earlier which was excellent with no signs of trouble. I was unaware what was wrong in Hamilton yet I could hardly recognize the band and specifically Eddie. Even worse the arena was empty and lacking energy which shocked me given it was a Van Halen concert which would normally be "electric". Van Halen was huge in Canada and any VH concert was a genuine highlight to those who loved rock music. I have seen many, many VH concerts and all were very good except this one show in Hamilton. Eddie did thank the audience for their patience after his meandering guitar solo. He seemed to acknowledge he was all over the place that night. Eddie appeared to me genuinely apologetic for his "odd" performance. The band played the previous night in Montreal, Quebec and I assumed exhaustion got the better of the band. Little did I know something far more serious was going on. I must confess I did not sense a bad vibe between Eddie and Sammy that night. Tension within the band was news to me and details of the dysfunction only became available once the tour had concluded.

Sammy claimed 'Ed and I are best friends then why didn't you help him try and get sober? Instead wrote a book burying both brothers badly exposing eds drug problems that's a very personal private matter. He did it for revenge and to make money. That's just straight up evil. Exactly he had one sing I can't drive 55. If it wasn't for the van halen brothers he'd be cleaning toilets at McDonald's.He goes on these interviews on the and acts surprised and perplexed like,," I don't understand why Ed and Alex have a broom stick up their butts they won't talk to me I just don't know why" umm yeah you do low life worthless waste of human DNA you absolutely buried the best musical duo in the history of music who saved your career and that's how you repay them. He's going straight to hell in a hand basket. I can't drive 55 that song wasn't even good either. Ugly clown not funny either like Dave was Dave was gorgeous incredible body built jacked like Eddie incredible hair, write unbelievable lyrics and I didn't even think his singing wasn't that bad I lived for that one in a trillion god given scream. Blended in perfect with the van halen brothers music. The acrobatics kicks, splits he did it all. Sammy didn't fit in Van Halen. That ugly hair he wasn't entertaining and he was in the end evil still can't believe he acts shocked that Alex won't talk to him and Eddie didn't when he was alive. You absolutely buried them for no reason and never gave them a penny. That's straight up evil. Cold blooded. Enjoy hell when you get there. And he's doing that dumb tour that Eddie would never approve of and no wonder Alex isn't having any part of it he hates him for burying him and Eddie after they saved his career.
