I played in the band that followed this performance on the telethon. I met them both and got their autographs backstage at Caesars Palace. They were both very gracious and kind to this young musician. RIP

That was pretty good! They were on a tight rope there, Sammy holding on for dear life in the presence of The Divine One. He held it together, hit his harmony note impressively and showed proper respect for the greatest female jazz vocalist of all time.

If I know anything about the two of them, this was minimally rehearsed, if at all. It was just two wonderful wonderful singers following each other in full command of their art. We don't see this kind of performance anymore, let alone these kind of voices. We can only imagine. Just fantasize about Sarah singing Pink's "Glitter in the Air".

On a couple of occasions they did sing together. Didn't come out too well because Ella was so competitive with Sarah. Singing over her. Ella sang fast Sarah slow. Men can be more generous with women than women are

It was obvious Sammmy was in awe of her. I saw Sarah Vaughan perform for the first and only about this time, in the early 1980s, in West Palm Beach, Florida. Dave Brubeck opened for her. I noticed that she was missing a tooth, but in all TV appearances before and after, she wasn't, so maybe she was between dental visits.
