Jerry Jeff Walker (mostly a writer) wrote and recorded this song. He me a guy in a New Orleans jail who called himself Mr. Bojangles so he wouldn't have to give the cops his real name (LOL). But the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band made it famous, pretty good song, but imho, Sammy Davis gave it life. Every time I watch this version, and how mesmerized the audience was I cry. If you let it run another 5 seconds, there was a middle aged French or German guy with Dark hair who was clapping like crazy, sitting with his small daughter. This maybe one of the best performances I have ever seen. You can find Sammy performing at like 3-4 years old on KZread. He was top notch.

Sunshine & E, Sammy took a fictional character in song written by Jerry Jeff Walker of the Niiy Gritty Dirt Band, and made it. His it his own ,this the fastest and less dramatic rendition of the song. If you still like him check out Bill Cosby pay a comic/ spoof tribute using this song and see a more dramatic rendition. Nice reaction. Also check out Harry Belafonte rendition of this song.

I saw him live in concert at The Sahara Hotel in Vegas. So fun, talented and a very caring gentleman. (Met him backstage for a brief min, I was a teen in the 80s). ❤❤ RIP🙏

Good reaction. Sammy's performance feels somehow depressing and uplifting at the same time to me.

This song is not about Bill "Bojangles" Robinson. Robinson never spent one second in any jail. This song is about a down and out white man. The song was written by a white man. During that time, white and Black men would not have shared a jail cell in New Orleans, it would have been against the law to put them in the same cell together. Bill "Bojangles" was a highly paid star of stage and film, he was never down and out, nor was he a drunk who would have been in a drunk tank in some local jail. He certainly didn't dance for drinks and tips.
