📊 WHAT IS POWER BI?
Power BI is a business analytics tool by Microsoft. It creates a working environment suited for normal users, meaning tasks such as data extraction, cleansing, analysis and storytelling; these are made easily-accessible to citizen-users, and extendable for technical users. At face value it provides visually-stunning, interactive dashboards, but it’s built on top of so much more.

One of the cleanest and clearest explanation of these functions. Keep them coming :)
Thank you so much Fernan for demystifying the difference that has eluded me a long time. Parallelperiod and dateadd. Cheers
This is about as clear an explanation as is possible. Very well done. THANKS!
Thanks man, this is exactly that I was looking for. Keep it up!
You are one of the best tutors on Power BI, that's for sure. Keep up the good work, Fernan. Thank you very much
thank you for this clear explanation
Excellent explaination.
Great explanation! Thank you!
Nicely done!
Really great content! Tks for sharing with us.
FERNAN! It's you! I stumbled across your channel and this was exactly what I needed ! 🥊🥊🥊
Thanks , very clearly and insightful. Keep going on this
Excellent 👌
Clear and accurate explanations keep it up🎉
Backward comparison with SAMEPERIODLASTYEAR works just fine. What I've noticed is when you're looking at YTD vs last year. For example 2024 YTD would show you the totals up to June 2024 BUT SAMEPERIODLASTYEAR will show the 12 months total for 2023 instead of Jan to June 2023?

Very Nice explanation
You just gained a subscriber
great
thank you very much indeed! does it provide a similar graph as running total?
Thank you for the explanation, how would you compare the same day for example 1/2/23 is Monday but need to compare it 1/3/23 because its Monday?
Hi, @Solutions Abroad. Great Explanation here. However, if lets say I wanna achieve a result wherein I need to show, Sales in "SamePeriodLast2Years". I.e., if I change the date context from Qtrs to Months, it should work like SamePeriodLastYear, but I need to show the data for last 2 years, or lets say next 2 years... How can we achieve this result ? Simply put - I need to show 2019 sales, 2017 sales and 2021 sales, with the ability to change the date context from years to quarters to months and even to dates Would be helpful, if u could provide a workaorund here...
Explain it like I am five kind of explanation!
Fantastic!! But how can I get total sales MTD (i.e only up to the current day of the month) for a previous 2 years?
Hi Fernan. Having the most difficult time creating a line graph that compares multiple previous periods; by that I mean, it goes beyond a single previous period. If the user wants to select "range =3", then the graph will display 3 years previous periods with 3 lines. Do you have a video that shows how to do this? I'm searching everywhere. I feel like I'm close but I just cannot get to the solution.
Thanks! For some reason, as soon as I swapped the date for the month, the values of [SamePeriodLastYear] disappeared from the table, but total is still there and is correct. It's driving me crazy! It's works fine as long as I use date but I can't swap it to another column from the date dimension table eg year-month, or year. Any suggestion how this might be resolved? Many thanks!
Good explanation but for the demo file you have uploaded on patreon which asks money to join and unlock it.. disappointing.
I have been trying this SAMEPERIODLASTYEAR but Matrix visual is not showing any result , it is just showing total at the bottom of the column., that's it. Can you help me please? Plus in some cases it was only showing result in month wise data, not in year wise data
If the Date column is set to "Date Hierarchy" then the SAMEPERIODLASTYEAR is showing blank only with Totals in the matrix... Whereas with No "Date Hierarchy" it works fine... Could anyone explain why?
i dont know why my "Total Sales" cannot be determined
If we don’t have any sales for 3 March 2024 I don’t see sales for last year 3 March 2023 using this function
