Sam Zell on Economy, Law, and Entrepreneurialism

Sam Zell is one of the world's leading investors in real estate, energy logistics, transportation, media, and health care. He and University of Chicago Law School Dean Michael Schill discuss the connections between and impact of the economy, law, and entrepreneurialism.
Zell currently serves on the JPMorgan National Advisory Board, the Eurohypo International Advisory Board, the President's Advisory Board at the University of Michigan, and the Visitor's Committee at the University of Michigan Law School. His insightful analysis of economic trends and investments strategies has made him a perennial member of Forbes billionaire list. Zell has previously served as chairman for Equity Office Properties Trust (EOP), which was sold to the Blackstone Group for $39 billion.

During an interview this guy mentioned that the reason why he chose to get rich and become successful was mainly due to the fact that many people basically underestimated him, in other words, they took him for a fool or like a little nothing, so he had to prove them wrong. That hit home for me.

I find it refreshing that this individual can be successful within an economic system that seems to provide headwinds against entrepreneurs like himself.

I'm sick of communist Democrats complaining about "income inequality." Income inequality isn't a bad thing in and of itself. Yes, the gap between the rich and poor is growing but it's not because the poor are getting poorer, it's because the rich grow richer at a faster pace than the poor, but this is simply the power of compound growth and there's nothing wrong with it. The fact of the matter is, the poorest people in the United States today live better than the Rockefellers did 100 years ago. The poorest people today have indoor plumbing, electricity, air conditioning, safe drinking water, instant communication with cell phones, the internet, etc. In the 1920s, Calvin Coolidge, the President of the United States saw his son die from an infection in a small cut in his foot. The president had access to the best medical care in the world and his son still died from a small cut. That was less than 100 years ago! Today if you get a cut you just open up your medicine cabinet and put on some antibiotic cream and a band aid, no matter how poor you are. Income inequality is not the problem, ignorance is.

Love his zest for business but what a bunch of garbage on regulations and the inequality. Sure there is no society that is equal, we are talking about the degree of inequality.

“Inequality” is communist agitprop. The more you focus on “inequality,” the more inequality will get. Stop complaining and start learning and working. And isn’t it funny that the most unequal of societies are precisely those that are the most socialist and communist?
