    @@michaelgrimm2121 nah, they're meant to sound intelligent without conveying any actual information. They're geared primarily to those who fear the intelligent, but want to see their opinions reflected in the mainstream. But they also don't recognize actual intelligent statements. Peterson is what philosophers through the ages called (pejoratively) a sophist. He’s educated and a reasonably good rhetorician, and he’s really good to sticking to his story. The problem is that he’s full of shit. He’s part of a legion of people to argue in bad faith so that the power structure can be maintained. The only thing Sam said in which I disagree is that the rich/powerful want zero politics. They know very well that politics (they way the right uses it) is how they construct a narrative to legitimize their position in society.

    10000% this. The right thrives on «petty politics» like the «culture war». They create scapegoats, lies, disinformation about minorities, that turn the working class against the minority instead of against their actual oppressors. You’ll see millions of poor, working men vote against their own interests as workers, because some decietful rhetoricion in his castle somewhere said that «gay people are taking over culture». It’s insane. I’m not sure the demagouge even think they are doing bad in service of the dominant classes. I think they might genuinely believe that vulnerable groups are NOT entiteled to take part in the goods of society. As in some fascistic «natural order» that it is not only futile, but actually immoral to challange. I think many of them are actually pathologically and authentically fascists who think they are lying for a good cause.

In between, he lets his agenda flow into the relevant claims, the agenda stuff he formulates as a question, so that he can never be pinned down to a straightforward answer. Within this narrative, these agenda-fueled questions seem like part of the other statements and the listener thinks he has discovered a truth here too.

    @mikeytopaz4601

    Жыл бұрын

    Well, I though that he was rightly caught flat footed, and could've done a better job at regrouping and clarifying what Wagner was questioning, but he simply could've said that the modern liberal class is overly preoccupied with offending people; just a certain group, while they care not about offending another group. I'm sure that I don't have to spell it out as to which groups I'm referring. But honestly, he understands the impeachment process. I guarantee you that. He even said that impeachment and conviction "is not an unimportant distinction." But by "impeachment" he pretty much means whatever ramifications come out of it, including non-conviction. In any case, he's saying that there isn't much consideration for what happens when that segment of the population is disenfranchised, and impeachment alone was going to do that. And then Jan 6th happened, and you now understand Peterson's original point.

    😂😂😂😂😂 You are doing the same thing you of which accuse those people. They follow a flawless entity, you label an entire entity as on thing. Your opinion is meaningless if not refereed to something specific, because nobody is only one thing, every narrative has a level of depth, and if big groups claim explain the world, it has an intrinsic meaning, even if false (you yourself have a with a high probability a wrong picture of reality. It has happen every single decade of the last 100 years, in which axioms crumble and are replaced. Only ignorant people don't see it, because they are happy with the illusion of being the owners of the truth (which is only the last available truth, to them)). How detrimental are his proposals, how delusional it is, it is a matter of debate. If the average attendee in Oxford Union, that was crowded, was mainly highly intelligent educated people and were delighted (The same in Madrid. I have friends flying from several parts of Europe to those conferences). I would say neither the market segment you refer to coincides with reality, nor you are doing anything but to elevate yourself over a cloud of vapor. I would say cheap labels are the dopamine for the soul of mediocre narrow minded self centered simpletons (that are so frequent in humanities). If you want to debate a certain point, it would be my pleasure to humiliate you 😉 PS: I know it would be easy to humiliate you because the guy doesn't have particularly original views, he just communicates mostly mainstream science, so it is the people who consider him an intellectual who area strange, and people who deny he is, because they are just ignorant, because he is just a guy that talks quite evident things.

    Thought that it was long hanging fruit for Seder. Clearly the guy was trying to think through how to respond to the disparate, yet related, notions that Wagner mentioned. What's interesting to note, is that Jan 6th has happened since the Real Time taping, and this MR critique of Peterson's appearance on it, and without a doubt, shows that Peterson had a helluva point, yet one that Seder seemed to need to mock. This sort of sanctimony is largely what self owns liberals, such as the historic defeat of Clinton in the 2016 election.

Self-help gurus say that you become "better" when you follow societal standards, like dressing in a certain way, having certain relationships and earning as much money as possible. But why are those things "better"? The only thing that might make sense is becoming happier, but bending over backwards to fit societal norms and overthinking what other people think about you will most certainly not make you happier. I wouldn't call myself perfect, but i also wouldn't say i'd become "better" if i followed different values.

    Just because this polarization is more visible on Twitter now doesn't mean it hadn't existed before. What was likely spoken at dinner tables in quiet is now easily plastered as an opinion on social media. I'd argue that the Republicans bear a bigger share of responsibility for fostering this polarization to begin with when they undermined Obama's presidency for 8 years, when they picked a non-political real estate magnate/billionaire/entertainer as their election candidate over anyone else better qualified, when they shoe-horned in Conservative Supreme Court nominees even when they shouldn't have, when they ignored covid, when they supported Trump's exit from major multilateral trade/environmental deals, when they turned a blind-eye to far right rhetoric, to Charlottesville, to the Capital Riots, etc etc etc. Peterson acknowledges none of this, and probably doesn't care. He's an academic psychologist - Seder is right to question why JBP's political comments are taken seriously at all.

    *sigh* The ever-present, redundant refrain of the Peterson fan when any criticism is levied at him. “You don’t understand.” “You’re taking him out of context.” “That’s not what he meant.” “You’re straw-manning him.” Well, maybe if the guy didn’t go out of his way to be inscrutable, and conveyed his ideas like a normal human being, maybe there wouldn’t be so much apparent misunderstanding.

    @@blakemeads9225 You might have a point there. He definitely take the scenic route of getting to the point, and will always opt for an obscure multi-syllabic word when a short common word would have sufficed. I suspect he does it to make his ideas sound more profound than they indeed are. I suppose it confuses some people, and that some people don't know what he's talking about. I like it though. I like words have always looked up words that I didn't know when reading, so I have a big vocabulary and I understand what he is saying and I like it. I get a kick out of the way he talks, but I do sometimes find it ridiculous.

    @@peanutgallery7753 Christopher Hitchens took the scenic route with his language, as well, but I always understood what he was trying to convey. With Peterson, the dude is so all over the damn place, it comes across less like a brilliant mind trying to convey a profound idea, and more like a pseudo-intellectual quack who wants me to think his ideas are more profound than they actually are by pumping them up with a bunch of sesquipedalian nonsense. 🤷‍♂️

    @@blakemeads9225 What is so hard to understand? I could maybe explain it for you. He has a couple different things he talks about - one of them is sex differences, which is totally uncontroversial in psychological literature. It's like footnotes from a Steven Pinker book. He makes it controversial, but it is mainstream stuff. The other is where he is talking about archetypes and common story motifs, and how he thinks there are clues in them about how to live a meaningful life. This is his unique thing. It is not as scientific as the sex difference stuff, but arguably more interesting. Or, you might not be into it at all. When I discovered him a few years ago it was this stuff that I found interesting. To each their own. Hitchens was fun. Both men are better speakers than they are writers imo.

Republicans clung to Nixon for years even after his corruption was apparent. It wasn't until concrete evidence came out that they flipped. That's tribalism along the lines of what we have today. Look up some political cartoons from the 80s and you'll find plenty of polarizing stuff about Reagan. Bill Clinton was impeached for lying about a sex scandal. Then there's the shit that Sam listed about Obama. No, Jordan simply has no clue about what hes talking about. I hate to say it but I partially agree with Peterson. A political movement can to some degree pull from a larger sensibility of the population through better framing. This was proven by George Lakoff. For example, you can discuss the idea of free or debt free college by bringing up Thomas Jefferson because wrote the outlines for both the public school system and the university system. And there is a long standing way of thinking about this called Jeffersonian Republicanism. I think Yang for example with UBI in some ways has evoked a synthesis of left and right thinking. Government intervention that provides freedom not coercion. A smart politician can convince many Trump voters for Medicare4All with a better framing that appeals to the right wing. For example that it will promote entrepreneurship by freeing people from a 9 -5 where they feel that they can take greater risks without loosing a safety net. As far as I am concerned Sanders was foolish to call himself a Democratic Socialist when he could have at least called himself more accurately a social democrat, in the very least. I think the left can also create a much better frame for identity politics by evoking old school universalism rather than adopting new school intersectionality. The logic being that all human beings are created equal (universalism) but are still not treated equally and we wanted to do better. And we want wealth redistribution to increase equal financial agency as well as increase democracy. Voters operate out of narratives and political identity. If a politician reasons with their established narrative they have a much better chance to win elections.
