    As a Chelsea fan it's very clear now the direction that the owners are moving in. When they first came they thought Brighton was the be all and end all. The wanted a model like Brighton's of buying young unknown players from some not well known league to turn for a big profit. They've now realised that model doesn't give you success. They have slowly edged towards City Group model and it looks like they'll continue to head that way. Joe Shields (ex city talent chief) has been given much more of a say now over signings compared to Stewert and Whitstanley, Neil Bath has left and is likely to be replaced by City's ex youth development manager and they've hired Maresca who was a Pep understudy. We'll see if it works.

    I think Sam’s frustration is fair and probably in line with my frustration with this Chelsea ownership If the philosophy is the same as the Abramovich era which to win at all costs then why overspend on inexperienced players who need steady years of development under one coach and then have them sacked after 1 year, then hire another one. If the ownership were serious about winning then they would purchase winning players and not sell the players who literally won the UCL It makes no sense!

    You must realise we had to sell most of those Champions league winners don’t you? The squad was stale, a mish mash of players from different managers and were on huge wages that didn’t want to be there. We’ve only spent big on a few young players and most likely they’ll come good. If you buy experienced players you lose money on them. I believe the balance is somewhere in the middle. We did buy experienced players when they first took over for TT and they didn’t work. They fired the coach because they didn’t see it working between them and thought they were better off trying something else.

    If you read any of business analysts looking at successful business one of the key reasons for success of Hewlett Packard in the 90's was "MBWA" which means "management by wandering around". So I would suggest Eghbali is doing this to be seen to be interested, learning about training/tactics and the human interaction. This is also shows the players that he is interested and shows he is not an Ivory Tower owner. Football pundits are so arrogant they feel they are the only ones that know anything. They need to realise Football is a business and needs to make money and they need to entertain the customers (fans) and make them win to make the business make money. The age old adage "customers make paydays possible" comes to mind.

  • @monochromaticspider
    @monochromaticspider28 күн бұрын

    Chelsea in the Roman era had very little philosophy. It had a "winning culture" but that's not a philosophy in any kind of strategic or tactical sense. It doesn't tell you what players to buy, it doesn't provide a guideline in terms of what abilities to focus on or how to line up or what to do next. It's an abstract, much like the SAS "who dares, wins" is a nice motto but not a philosophy for embracing missions with no planning. If we have to state something that approaches being a philosophy, it was the frankly some times ridiculous focus on short term optimization. There was never any focus on building up, never any focus on thinking long term. It was always just "win now". And it just doesn't work long term, which is why Chelsea cycled through managers, chopped and changed, and managed to send Mata to Man Utd, de Bruyne to City, and Salah to Liverpool. Imagine if Chelsea had been just a little bit patient and Salah and Bruyne had played on the same team as Eden freaking Hazard? But switching focus to the Toddler crew, they bought Chelsea at a couple of billion and they want to make that money back with interest, but part of the deal is that they can't sell for another eight or nine years. That means making the club gain quite a lot in value. Winning a few trophies would be great but it isn't essential. Being perceived as a "big club" is. Tesla is the most valuable car company in the world and they're not even selling that many cars. Why? Because they've convinced everybody that they are in fact a tech company, and the whole car selling thing is just incidental. The Toddlers fired Poch, and I reckont he biggest reason for that was that there just wasn't any obvious way he'd take the team further. And taking the team further, showing progress, is required for Chelsea to get back into the "top club" bracket instead of being "mid table". Poch's style was chaos. It was the only way he got performances. That obviously isn't sustainable. Pure chaos does not build a good brand. Tiki-taka, on the other hand, is still something that makes everybody think of Pep and Barca. That's potentially awesome branding. Can Maresca pull it off? Who knows? It's a gamble. But the owners are big capital investors. Gambling is what they do. Going with Poch for another year wasn't looking too rewarding. Trying something somewhat radical? It has risk for sure, but potentially also a huge payoff. And we have some very good players at this point, who are tied up long term and who do know each other pretty well. And Maresca has an entire preseason.
