Sam Kerr Comes To Ellie Carpenter's Defence Against Women's World Cup Trolls | 10 News First

Спорт

Matildas' captain Sam Kerr has fired back against trolls who've targeted teammate Ellie Carpenter with vile online abuse in the wake of Wednesday's FIFA Women's World Cup defeat to England's Lionesses. While millions across the nation have only respect and admiration for the Matildas, some cowardly critics have forced Carpenter, whose defensive error led to one of England's three goals, to restrict her social media.

As an Englishman I find this just as abhorrent as any Australian would. The Matilda’s did a magnificent job on the pitch, capturing the imagination of a nation in the process, and that’s all people should be talking about. I know who I’ll be cheering for in the 3rd/4th place game. 🇦🇺 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿

Carpenter was fully at fault for 1 goal. And was partially at fault for the other 2. She played one of the worst games for a defended that I have ever seen. They love the praise and adoration they get from the fans, then they can handle the criticism. It would be one thing, if the criticism wasn’t valid, but he genuinely lost the Matildas the game. Her defense was shameful.

@@javiersilva1577 Nonsense, the first and third goal were scored by players, who weren't her job to take out. Plus, what happened to the midfield before goal number 3? Kerr alone should have scored 3 times, Raso had a 100% chance as well.

Funny that, strikers can make a lot of mistakes and forgiven for missing "sitters" but defenders and keepers are often slated for just one. Did Ellie make more potentially match defining mistakes than Sam? Not having a go at either they both gave their all, everyone is human, they played their hearts out.

That is the life of a goalkeeper, which is why there is often a 'goalkeepers union' where they defend each other outside of the game in the media. A striker can miss chances at 0-0 and they're still in the game, the same isn't said for defenders/goalkeepers.

As someone who played a lot of sport when I was younger, I was very disappointed by some of the finger-pointing by former players appearing on some of the Australian media coverage. These comments may have been said in the heat of the moment, immediately following the game, but I still think they should have known better. I'm an England supporter, but I think the Matildas are an incredibly exciting team, who have a great future ahead of them. I look forward to many more battles between our two sides, and like many others I will be cheering for the Matildas tomorrow.

The team's defence suffered due to poor communication between Fowler and Kerr, resulting in unavoidable mistakes. Carpenter's blunder cost us a point; the coach was slow to make necessary team changes, which in this case could have brought back the team's momentum sooner. Kerr missed several scoring opportunities, and I might add vital ones, which ultimately led to their defeat. It is important to note that any form of harassment is unacceptable, and in my honest opinion, I do believe people have taken it too far in the social sphere like they always do. The British team's success can be attributed to their consistent communication and keeping track of each other's positions.

Carpenter played her heart out in this Tournament, she`s an amazing talent, it takes a team to win a soccer game, not 1 person apart from a striker`s job, which is the position to help win a game, lay off Ellie Carpenter.

Carpenter didn't do a that bad job the defense all had to pick up slack after losing Kennedy. If anything Polkinghorne was terrible worse on ground but even in her defense she has had zero mileage this world cup and was not reading the play well and getting caught out of position loosing her footing on every defensive exchange. But you still can't blame someone that had no time on the pitch and wasn't gelling with Catley or Carpenter the defense was a mess. That's where England caught us with our pants down. If Kennedy was there between her and Catley and Arnold had things covered previously and were well up to the task against any team. Its a shame Kennedy pulled out at the last minute. Does anybody know what happened to her yet ? We need to focus on a stronger defense as our mids and forwards are pretty class. Kennedy Arnold and Catley need a bit more help in their department.

That's awful and no human being should be subject to that. If she was a man though, the media and fans would all turn on him and he would be expected to deal with it with only the support of family and team mates. Glad at least half the population gets a bit of media support.

To be fair, I was critical of Carpenter's whole tournament. She was consistently out of position, or late to defend, and her turnovers were for too frequent. Her passing game was well below professional standard in every WWC match. Is she to blame for the Matilda's loss? Not singularly. It takes a team to win, and it takes a team to lose.

There's just misunderstanding here for the critics. You know very well that one team has to lose, and it was unfortunate that the dice fell onto the Matildas. Besides, for a team to make to the 4th place in the world cup, the Matildas were superb. Congratulations Matilda.

Tbh, I don’t believe in insulting people, but , polkinghorne and carpenter should have been benched to begin with vin and de Edmond killed it when they came on, they did more damage, they worked more as a team.. and it’s also not about trying your best it’s about being the best, and they weren’t.. I’m sure they’re nice people but they need to be replaced, this is the World Cup, not club sport

Part of pro sports is being heaped with praise and adoration when playing well and being criticized for massive blunders. The days of not being able to criticize a player because she’s a woman and deemed more sensitive are over and it’s sexist to think women can’t handle criticism.

@@DONER_KEBAB_1234 The ref's need to stay objective though and not play favourites, it affects the result. It's like the Butterfly Effect. Even something as simple as not calling fouls for one compared to the other. A more 'masculine' female ref (i.e. dictated by testosterone and logic) would be preferred if it's gotta be a female.
