I felt Sam's pain too! I thought it was rude of Stephen to do that. If he couldn't or wouldn't drink, he should have let Sam know & handled it differently. Sam didn't deserve that.

I love Stephen, but that interview was a mess. So many things to talk about and Stephen chooses to be disrespectful and boring. Everybody knows that Sam is sexy, the meaning of Sassenach, the scottish accent and etc. That's not news. Stephen reduced him to stereotypes. Sam is such a nice guy and he deserves a better interview.

Let me explain - A sassenach in an English Person - just as An Albanach is a Scottish person and not an Inlander !! a Nach is a person male or female as in my passport Eireannach - Irish person

I don’t usually have the energy to be offended on someone else’s behalf but seeing Stephen pour that soda into the Scotch like that activated my defence system.

If he didn't want Sam on the show, he shouldn't have invited him. Pouring that sugar-free, glorified horse piss into Sam's scotch was absolutely rude. The interview, in general, was the worst I've seen so far on The Late Show at any rate. Colbert, you are MUCH BETTER than this.

Yeah it was really off. I don’t know the guest he seemed fine on the show itself but there was something seriously awkward going on there. If you don’t like the taste of the scotch you just take one sip and say yum and that’s it. I like Colbert but it was weird to see him drown the scotch in a fizzy drink and then mock it. Very bizarre there is definitely something going on there.

"What's he doing?" - Mouthed Sam Heughan. You can also audibly hear the audience groaning and some even booing. That was straight up disrespectful. The scotch looks great and he ruined it by not even having a sip before diluting it.

@@penguinista I'd want to see some proof of this, and it would be a relief if true. But whether scripted or off-the-cuff "humour" it missed the mark. Our instinctive take was obviously shared by many. It just seemed weird and uncharacteritically mean-spirited. If the guest was Oliver or Stewart, different story.

If it was supposed to be a joke, they didn't take that fact into consideration & it was executed poorly. The rest of the short interview wasn't any better on Stephen's part. I still feel that Sam was disrespected and Stephen should apologize.

@@kimberlyrobertson5025 Well, my issue is purely with Stephen cutting the whisky. a) It´s disgusting, and b) It´s kind of disrespectful. Either don´t promote the product at all, or suck it up, have a sip and compliment the guy. The John Oliver quote was the first thing that came into my mind, and in his voice, too :)

This whole interview was so sad. Colbert didn’t knew anything about the guest, nothing about the scotch, the show, himself. 0 effort on knowing him and 0 effort in the interview itself and in top of all that, you go and put soda on his own scotch? That’s disrespectful man, if I was Sam, I would left there.

Tomás Glavina Yes, Stephen is often invested in his guests, but he told Catriona last year that he’s never watched Outlander, and he sadly has made no attempt to know anything about it...or the actors. It felt like Stephen also had a bias toward Sam being just a sex symbol, and Sam deftly moved back to the series itself, and the story it wants to tell. It was a rare bad interview, and not because of Sam.

If you notice, Colbert doesn't have ice in his whiskey he drinks during his monologue. What the hell was with the ice and the garbage pop? I am pissed at Colbert. It didn't have to be Sam. It could have been any one and I still would have been angry about how Colbert acted and I like him generally. He was just plain rude and disrespectful. Sam has worked hard to get where he is at and no one knows that better than Colbert how hard it is to get there. He needs to remember he is not the only one that has done the work.

That was easily Stephen's poorest interview, and seemed a bit hostile towards the guest. It was a mess at a minimum and the way Stephen treated his Scotch was absolutely rude and insulting. I would not be surprised if Sam's agent refuses to let him come back in the future. Stephen didn't just botch the interview, he actually wronged Sam by how poor form it was. I'm very disappointed in Stephen on this one. We hold you to a higher standard Mr. Colbert.

That was the strangest interview. It was so completely all over the place, rushed to do so many bits, and oh gracious, THE FRESCA. They shouldn’t have let it even air.

This was the worst interview ever on television. Sam did not deserve this at all. He was presented as a pretty boy by Stephen, why? His character is deep, courageous, smart loving respectful I can go on and on. And jeeees don’t even get me started on what he did to his whiskey 🥃!!! WTF was that for? There was such an animosity in this haphazard interview!

I’m really pleased to see that so many others on this thread sensed the poor taste in Colbert’s behaviour towards Sam. I’m shocked that Colbert was such an unprofessional (rude, unprepared, un-researched) “host”. I’ve seen him act more gentlemanly to reality show “stars”. Also, the speaking line with smoulder face seemed like a weird flex on Colbert’s behalf so he could have an excuse to show off his cocktail party Scottish accent trick.

There s something off with middle-age male talk show hosts and good looking young male guests...They get obviously dead jealous. Same thing happened few weeks ago with Jimmy Kimmel and Henry Cavill...Same rude, under the belt hits throughout the whole interview..Stephen, get it together man, you ain t running for Clooney of the year, you are talented and that s more than enough

Stephen know everything before hand. Trust me. Think about the stupid lines Colbert had Mr. Heughan read. Stephan was out to prove he had a better Scot accent than Mr. Heughan. He rehearsed it and I wouldn’t be surprised if he hired a coach to help him get the accent just right. Didn’t anyone notice Colbert celebrating after he read his lines, as if he won the challenge. Colbert only ended looking silly and jealous of Mr. Heughan.

It‘s amazing to me how Stephen is very into proving how ‚cultured‘ he is, particularly with English guests (all the Shakespeare all the time) and then he does this (with a Scotsman whose work he deems too low-brow).Yeah, nope.

Big fan of Colbert, but this was weird. I admire Sam for keeping his cool in the face the highly disrespectful treatment he received. Did we just get a glimpse of the real Colbert...or can he explain his behaviour.?

I was very excited to watch Sam on the show, but was disappointed with the way Stephen Colbert treated Sam. Felt he was very disrespectful. Its not like he never drank the neat Scotch/Whiskey on the show before, with Matthew McConaughey and more. Past few episodes I felt Stephen Colbert has become more rude to his guests. Could be that he has actually tasted it before the show and thinks it sucks. Just because a celebrity makes something doesn't mean it's good and you should waste your money on it. Also, could be fresca paid for a spot on the show and this is what they decided Stephen should do. You guys are getting overly excited about a scripted show as if it's live and organic.

I was embarrassed for Sam, who was more than calm, enduring the debacle quietly. It’s October of 2022, and I am STILL STUNNED. I MAY JUST FORGET I grew up in S.C. 🤨

Everyone who comes on his show is there to promote something. So, why did Colbert do it?

Colbert is a comedic talk show host so it didn’t surprise me with the Fresca. Sam just rolled with it like “ok you’re crazy”. Sam... a genuinely nice guy. Slainte Sam. I’ll be having mine straight up.

Sam is such an amazing actor! Theatre trained, they could have talked about that, as Colbert seems to know a lot about theatre . Sam is also a gentleman and a wonderful person who works a lot for charity (MPC, Blodwise) that could have been mentioned too. And why on earth did Colbert disrespect the scotch like that? 🥃 I don't drink alcohol, but I found that very weird.

Sunflower Watermelon Sugar High I feel like there must have been something that happened behind the scenes, this was bizarre and off form for Colbert.

My regard for Stephen Colbert has plummeted after watching this interview. Outlander is a terrific show and Sam is a fantastic actor, not just a sex symbol. I’m almost finished watching the fourth season of outlander and Jamie has his clothes on almost all of the time, so for Colbert to have made that remark about having trouble finding a shot of him with his shirt on was just ridiculous. There were so many questions he could have asked about the show, the actor’s previous history, his addition to the production team, etc. , but no, all we get is disrespect and rude behavior. Was Stephen jealous or something? That was awful!

Stephen Colbert really needs to work on not appearing so obviously uninterested in the guests he doesn't care about. Seen a few interviews like this... it's pretty rude.

Scotch bit aside, this was an awkward, rude and half-assed interview. Like, Jimmy Fallon level but make it mean and sexist. 3 years of covering Trump ad nauseam must have gotten to Colbert. Not a squealing diehard fan but really, I felt bad for the poor lad.

wannawannawanna I’m a fan of Stephen and don’t even know Sam but I was embarrassed by Colbert’s behavior. The man seemed very sweet and Stephen was absolutely rude to the point of insulting. I’m shocked.

I have to agree with everyone ! Stephen was rude, dismissive and underwhelming. With this kind of behavior, I have to reconsider watching the show in the future. I doubt that Jimmy or Seth would be such a poor host.

My goodness! I cringed, and it appears by all the comments I was not alone. This is not the Stephen we have come to know. Seemed like Stephen had some beef with him and Stephen was forced to do the interview. Not cool.

You really should binge watch. It is one of the best shows ever. Every episode is jaw dropping. Old time shows were not my thing either, but i instantly fell for this one. You are really missing out if you do not give it a try.

꧁Cat G꧂: My friend has been onto me to watch this show. 5 years later I have started watching it and I am so so impressed. With the story, production, actors, cinematography. I am obsessed now. Truly a magnificent show. And having watched Stephen for years this was one bizarre interview and certainly not his best. And as for the Whisky segment. Very strange.

Yikes!!! I actually gasped when Stephen poured the pop into the scotch. Poor Sam. Very awkward interview.

He already ruined it with the ice in the glass But then proceeds to dilute it with pish juice.

Heughan's face when Stephen poured Fresca into the whiskey is ME, every time I see Germans adding Fanta to their beers. I feel your pain, dude!

OMG that's bizzarre and hilarious. In Spain people often assumed I would make Te Americano by steeping tea in hot milk (and water maybe?) and I was like, I don't do that...I don't think ANYBODY does that....I have never heard of anybody doing that 😂😂😂

Usually it‘s Sprite though, to be somewhat fair, never personally seen anyone do it with Fanta.

How could the writers not have known what Sassenach means ? It is literally one of the first things he says in the show. Maybe they did it to make him explain it but it would have been so much nicer to make him feel included if they would have done that easy research.

That was awfuly disrespectful

This was such an awkward interview. It felt like they were both uncomfortable with each other. Maybe it’s just me but I find Stephen (whom I absolutely adore watching) has lost his mojo recently. He looks tired and it feels like he’s just going through the actions of hosting the show. I’m also perplexed about the whisky and fresca thing. Even if it was scripted, it wasn’t funny.

Yeesh... little cold to Sam about his whiskey. Damn, and mixing it? Jeez, rude. I don’t drink but if I was having a guest on a talk show I would’ve at least tried the pure product. Sam is always so polite, but damn Steve wasn’t polite at all.

Sassenach?? Obviously Colbert has never watched even one episode of Outlander, maybe why it was all a bit of a hopeless effort on his part.

Why wasn't Sam promoted at the top of the hour? He is as big a draw as James Marsden if not bigger (for a lot of people). And the segment was way too short.

If Colbert was still at the South Carolina Improv and TV Host Finishing School for Young Gentlemen he would have been marked down for that exchange, I can tell you.

@UThink UCan Can you read? "then added the soft drink." A person buys you a beverage, you should try it before giving it to the bartender to add Coke. I love Steven but the fact that the beverage was the product of the guest makes the offense even worse.

I was also so disappointed with Stephen Colbert's behavior. Bravo for keeping your cool under pressure! Ps. Can't wait for The Sassanach to come to the EU! :)

Can’t believe Stephen missed out on talking about his guest being actually named for Samwise Gamgee.

I really like Stephen he usually gives really good insightfull and intersting interviews .... I don't know what happened there. Didn't put as much efforts as he does for other guests, that's a shame... I felt like watching Jimmy Fallon...

Second time this week I am unimpressed with Colbert. It's as though, now that he doesn't have enough to snark over the the guy in the WH about, he's snarking anywhere else he can. Stephen, maybe you're not as funny as you think you are. Judging from comments on this clip, an attitude adjustment might be in order.

SC has had many a glass of spirits (neat & on rocks) while hosting ... WTF was this? Honestly, I found it rude. The guy is your fricking guest. Do you draw on musicians’ album covers? Do you change the title of an author’s book? Seriously, why the hell would you do that to a guest?

I generally love Colbert but I found him to be extremely rude and ungrateful with Sam. Sam brought him a gift and Colbert totally insulted him. You could tell by Sam's reaction he wasn't happy with the behavior but Sam being polite and easy going handled it with class. I always like Colbert but I found this unacceptable. I understand Colbert has his own whiskey but that is no reason to not taste another whiskey with respect. Actually I think he owes Sam an apology. I hope Colbert's head isn't getting too big. That has wreck a lot of people on TV.
