Sam Fender - That Sound - an exclusive live performance for Vevo DSCVR ARTISTS TO WATCH 2019, an annual series highlighting those that are shaping the future of music.
It's very rare to see an artist so fresh on the scene and so young in his years, pen songs with such bravery and substance in their meaning. Yet for Sam Fender, the unassuming 23-year-old, this is a conscious decision. Paring his gravelly deep voice with hard-hitting songwriting and gritty indie riffs to create genuinely weighty tracks. Lyrical themes around male suicide, mental health and toxic masculinity, are subject matters that even the most experienced songwriter would be hesitant to tackle. Track “Dead Boys” highlights Sam’s brilliance to bring these issues to the forefront. Forming these issues into a captivating indie ditty, that will no doubt spark a conversation and create awareness. As to Sam it's important for him to write songs with conviction, authenticity and subjects close to his heart. It's these core beliefs that will connect Sam with new fans around the globe, as they’ll no doubt relate with his messages. Sam has the potential to use this incredible songwriting ability to connect with, and be a voice for, millennials. As his songs truly have the substance to represent their struggles but then at the same time, are also filled with stadium rousing guitar riffs!

HE IS AMAZING! I love how he raises issues that many people assume as taboo and find difficult to talk about it. Sam using his time to speak out by cleverly using his talent is incredible. Sam has to be my favourite artist of all time, he has an angelic yet deep voice for our generation and for the future. Im glad he won the British Critic Choice Award. (i envy his musical talent ☺️) ♥️

RKaur XO I was born in 1970, ‘my’ generation passed away (Prince, David Bowie, George Michael, Michael Jackson). Still adore Prince (music), Bowie (personality and sound) and G.M. (voice) and what they did for the music industry and my heart. Sam Fender sets a new sound, his voice is mesmerizing (you put it wonderful RKaur!) and lyrics outstanding. And his personality? Someone you wish all the best in the world! Funny, wise, very honest and heartwarming. Seen him 3 times now in the Netherlands and he is the new man!
The one thing Britain is still good at, producing quality home grown bands. Shame we don’t export anything else!

Aye, Sam's happy to talk about Dru being a "Drum God". But he's a little bit embarrassed about nicking him from another Geordie band...
If he plays this at the Brit awards he will piss on everyone's fireworks.

I found him being played on BBC Radio 1. I was genuinely amazed at how good his voice is and also the quality of the songwriting and lyrics. I've been getting so fed up with "Urban" music (painting a broad stroke there I know) playing on the wireless almost constantly for years now and I haven't discovered anyone new that I love since I first heard Alt J on the radio. Not comparing the two whatsoever but that was the last thing that really made me listen. Thankfully there are people like Sam Fender making music that is both great and able to be played on the radio. He'll surely go far.

i found him about a year ago when youtube showed me an ad for dead boys. i downloaded the song onto my phone, listened to it for about a week then forgot about it. then, in march this year, radio 1 played play god. i loved it. then i realised the name sam fender rang a bell. i started listening to dead boys again and play god, but not really anything else. and then i slowly got listening to his other stuff, and now i love all of his songs.

I swear the music gets better and sam gets more attractive each time
the sound on the lead guitar is just immense. So unbelievably good, unique.
Hints of simple minds, tears for fears. Everything great about 80/90’s music with a modern twist. Excellent

It sounds like he listened to a shed load of that era/style, bought a couple of Killers albums more recently, put his own twist on it and made this absolute winner of a song. That voice is beautiful too, a perfect ratio of power and delicate. Hard to achieve but he's done it! He's a serious talent I can see for sure.

The cult, and the intro is pretty much paradise city by guns and roses
Serotonin stole the moment The best of me was left under the bed sheets On that somber morning Dying for some REM My mind has always struggled With where have I been and where am I going When my head comes crashing down They were waiting at the bottom Trying to claw me down beneath it all Every night I beg that sound It’s the greatest revelation It’s the only thing that keeps me grounded I need to hear that sound I need to hear that Loaded vampires butter me up Drop names and sniff up residue While boasting ‘bout their revenue At home I face these green eyed beasts Everybody wants to leave But no one wants to see you do it When my head comes crashing down They were waiting at the bottom Trying to claw me down beneath it all Every night I beg that sound It’s the greatest revelation It’s the only thing that keeps me grounded I need to hear that sound I need to hear
Finally getting a recognition he deserves.

I'm predicting his album will go in at no. 1 in the UK.
Thankful for BBC Live lounge because if it wasn’t for them, I wouldn’t find this treasure. He and his band needs more recognition!
His music reaches my veins, heart & soul. On the one hand, I wish this would stay as something that is musically my secret, but with this explosive sound I know it's just a matter of time. Sam, your music is beyond meaningful.
Probably my fave version/video of this one. I just love it - come back to it repeatedly.

He’s quickly become one of my favourite artists of all time and he doesn’t even have an album yet! He’s so aware and knowledgeable and being acutely aware of some things can leave one upset with the world but he turns it into art. Such amazing music from such a young lad is honestly a blessing, so thank you Sam for creating and sharing your experience and VEVO DSCVR for highlighting such a talent.
His voice is crystal pure. 💛
For some reason this makes me think of U2 in their early years. I love it, it sounds so good.

One of the few rock songs of the last twenty years I actually enjoy. Very late eighties/early nineties.
whoever mixed the drums, you have won for the rust of the year😪🔥. sam fender is one of my new favorite artists.
Love the classic rock vibe it's got to it, like late 80s to early 90s.
This kid is a mix of so many good sounds. Best album I've heard in years. Sam fender will save Rock.
Sam Fender is an outstanding lyricist and musician among all the crap that´s being produced nowadays. Sharp minded. Love his work.
Just the most terrific music of this YEAR!!!
Besides that he is bloody talented this is another KZread comment section I enjoy. Just like Hoziers videos there are only nice people here and I love it. 😁
So... I didn't expect him to sound THAT GOOD live. That being said , Sam Fender has just become in one of my favorite artist
