Salton Sea SRA Camping and Visit to the Dos Palmes Preserve

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Mid-December 2021 finds us camped at a favorite snowbird location. The Salton Sea State Recreation Area near Palm Springs. In the video, I give you a look at our camping location called Salt Creek, the terrain, and the wildlife. Later we took a short drive to nearby Los Palmas Reserve to check out an oasis of natural palm trees.
Salt Creek is primitive camping with no hookups but has garbage cans, portapotties, picnic tables, and some fire rings. The current rate is $10 a night in a self-registration box. Water and a dump station can be found a few miles down the road at the Headquarters campground and visitor center.

    Totally fascinated by this place, can't wait to make it down that way now that I'm on the West coast. Hell, I might buy some land and move to the Sea when I (try to) retire in ten years. You can actually (kinda) still afford California property there. Amazing. Cheers!

    Hi Ray! When I was a small child, we used to go to Salton Sea with neighbors who had a home there way back in the early '60s. It was kind of nice back then. We visited again during the late '80s and it was so sad looking. The town was in very poor repair. Our neighbors bought their home thinking they would retire there, but it never worked out for them. I don't know if they were able to sell their property or what happened to their home. But, it clearly looks nicer now than it did 45 years ago. So glad you are having a nice snow bird trip! Merry Christmas to you and Ann!

    You are sitting right on the San Andreas Fault. The Eastern and Northern ( as you travel northwest) hills have many sprimgs (Desert Hot Springs) that emerge from the fractures in the earths crust. There is another palm oasis just North of Palm Desert that has ponds with a pup fish found only there. I cannot imagine a greater difference between Where you live on Vancouver Island and where you are staying. Different beauties. Cheers to you!

    At 220 feet below sea level, they could build a large siphon pipe with a gate valve for flow control and fill the sea with ocean water since it's salt water anyway.

    www.usatoday.com/in-depth/graphics/2021/06/11/salton-sea-drying-up-infrastructure-projects/5243837001/ The most commonly discussed idea is to build a canal across the U.S.-Mexican border that connects to the Sea of Cortez, 125 miles to the south, and import water to the Salton Sea. By comparison (although much more narrow and shallow), a sea-to-sea canal would be more than twice as long as the Panama Canal.Such a sea-to-sea route has been promoted by businessman Gary Jennings, a founding partner of the Sea to Sea Canal Co. Another proposal submitted by Agess Inc. includes flooding 142,000 acres of a dry lakebed in Mexico called Laguna Salada and creating economic development in Baja California. Sending ocean water across the desert wouldn't be an easy fix, and any plan would need to negotiate agreements with a variety of stakeholders on both sides of the international border with Mexico. Even carefully laid routes would need to traverse private land, communal farmlands and Cucapá territory. On top of the permitting and treaty hurdles, an exact dollar amount isn't known, but estimates have suggested costs for a canal project would range into the billions of dollars.

    The Salton Sea is replenished with nearly one million acre feet of salty farm waste water every year from 500,000 acres of farm ground.. Approximately 10,000 tons of salt from farm run-off is delivered in a watery solution every day by the Alamo River and New River.

  • @LoveYourRV

    @LoveYourRV

    2 жыл бұрын

    Not really, so far we have seen about the same or even less than in previous years. But we aren't RV park campers when we travel south and do a lot of off-grid type camping in natural type areas so maybe that's why. We generally avoid the busier boondocking places like Quartzsite and the Colorado River LTVA areas. As for all the new RVs. They aren't really set up for dry camping very long and newbies don't know much about it. Also, many Canadians decided not to come down this year due to Covid concerns. Cheers, Ray

    Corvina and Mecca campgrounds are a little closer but not much. There is a boat ramp at the headquarters campground and a small bay. The lake has receded over the years and the ground isn't firm enough for RVs as you get closer to the edge. I used to see kayakers 3-4 years ago but haven't seen many lately, maybe its to salty now or other nasty stuff in the waters. Try Googling "Salton Sea Kayaking" Cheers, Ray
