Saltatio Mortis (latin for dance of the dead) is a german folk metal band. They founded in 2000 and started by playing music on medieval markets and as street musicians. The Pack that survived the first battle and going to adventure are the band members. The Captain is the Singer Alea, the guy who was killed by the arrow is Luzy one of the bagpipe players, the last survivor is Falk, he plays the Hurdy Gurdy, the guy who died at the tree is Frank the bassplayer, the guy who sent Alea away is the drummer Jean and so on. Beside playing on big festivals and concert halls now, they still can be found on medieval markets playing for free. They still have strong ties with the whole medieval and Larp (Live Action Role Play) scene in Germany. Thats why they are able to produce such an amazing video. Most of the actors are volunteers and friends bringing their own equipment and working for nearly no money. Alea is also an avid sword fighter from his active days at the medieval markets. The song/ video and the whole new album is a homage to the biggest pen and paper game called Das schwarze Auge (the dark eye) for their 40th anniversary. Every song is based on the game. The Finsterwacht are guardians protecting the land from the Orcs and to warn the surrounding. The chanting at the campfire was a prayer to the DSA Goddess Rhondra to protect them, the more people sing, the stronger they get. There si also a second song from the Finsterwacht album released called Schwarzer Starnd (black shore) featuring Faun, which is also very good. Most of their music is in german, but they also have some songs in english like Pray to the hunter (also awesome video) and The Dragonborn comes feat Lara Loft, I would also recoment My mother told me, pretty good song and awesome video.

Music videos have been taken to a WHOLE NEW level!! Thanks Toe. I doubt I would have come across this banger without you. Anyone who says reactors serve no purpose or are just trying to get clicks from another creator's work are dead wrong. Thanks again for the great reaction and Happy Sunday!

Haha, love your reaction 👍 Don't forget, Germans and Scandinavians like Denmark, Sweden and Norway share the same mythology and language group, just a little bit different. The Scandinavians are also Germanic, to be precise North Germanic, while Germans, English, Dutch and Austrians are West Germanic 🙂

Thank you for showing your reaction to that song again it was the one that I requested on the livestream and I just love it so much. I came upon it unexpectedly as it was a random play on Amazon music one night so I thank them for that. Amazing reaction David and I'm glad you liked it so much.

Saltatio Mortis are really great!! I know them for sooo long and saw them on several medieval festivals all over Germany. Yea, since they sing in German their international appearance is relatively rare. So thank you for your reaction, although the song is in German! I really like your comments a lot. 😀

Great reaction! :) A bit of background: It's the first single from Saltatio Mortis' upcoming concept album Finsterwacht ("dark watch"), an hommage to German tabletop RPG Das Schwarze Auge (DSA)/The Dark Eye (TDE) for it's 40 years aniversary. The box contains the CD, a novel (one of the authors - Bernhard Hennen - is the one, who dies on the field after handing out the map), a tabletop adventure book (choose your own adventure style) and dice. Saltatio Mortis is a German medieval rock band, but they also mix in different music styles. The second single (Schwarzer Strand/"black beach") and the third single (Feuer und Erz/Fire Ore) are already out, and there are 2 more to come before release of the box on May 31th. There are also (German) making of videos for all the three music videos. Finsterwacht are a line of towers/beacons in the mountains of Finsterkamm, as last line of defense between the lands of humans and orcs (those are the creatures in the video) at Heldentrutz, a part of Weiden in the Middenrealm at the continent of Aventuria. Their function is to warn the people as seen in the video. Saltatio Mortis (latin for "dance of the death") is the group trying to reach this goal in the video. The video took 4 days of shooting, with a lot of LARPers - which is why they have such good costumes. The choir at the beginning and end is from Prague orchestra. Hansi from Blind Guardian sings at the chorus, sometimes alone, sometimes with Saltatio Mortis' lead singer Alea (the blonde, bearded guy).

Hello David, long time no see. This is a great song/video for sure. Very rare to see a video like this being made today, but very appreciative. And as you might remember when you had this livestream I was in Stockholm watching .......Blind Guardian.Great band, great concert. They don't really have that many music videos, but if you want some song recommendations go with Majesty, Mirror Mirror, Nightfall, The Bard's song, Curse of Feanor, Somewhere far beyond and of course Mordred's song which is my favourite song by them (especially the live version, v=v0lPIgbOQJs).

I don`t know what`s the reason but german metal music vids are so cracy: Rammstein, Saltatio Mortis or Faun ( the last less metal but with a real swagger and really good music vids) and others are of such a cinematic quality... I´m biased as a german metal fan, but I don`t know many bands that can do this and a lot of that are german

I LOVE hearing original music done in an imaginative way. The story and cinematography are Sabaton level.

This song and the album with the same name is a collab with the Ulisses Spiele GmbH. Ulisses is a publisher for Pen and Paper Roleplay games. They merged to promote the pen and paper system Das Schwarze Auge (The Dark Eye) Finsterwacht is a special region on the continent Aventuria where The Dark Eye is located. The songs on the album are perfect for a roleplay evening even if they don't directly refer to the dark eye. in this special collab box there is this album, bandmember cards, a book, a solo adventure and character sheets and Alea is one of the playable characters.

Great Reaction. This song (even more so in combination with the video) is so freaking epic and it's a pity that peopleshy away from it since it's in German, as I think the whole story is rather self-explanatory eventually. As HinterdemAugeDSA alreay pointed out, there are two more videos out for the project already, but those are - well, different. Feuer und Erz (Fire and Ore) I think is very similar in style when it comes to the music, but sadly, it got an impressive, but no way Fantasy-related video showing the band working with the Prague symphony orchestra for the album. (As Feuer und Erz is basically about Dwarves, everything else probably would have been a bit of a challenge - to the budget and probably also otherwise.) Can't wait to watch (and listen to) the remaining songs.
