Salt & Tar: Episode 92-Hottest Day of 2020 Thus Far🌞

Happy Video Thursday! Spring is here and that means more workable days than not. It's always exciting to watch the weather change. It adds new motivation in the air. But then, we realize just how tired we are. It's been a long project. So this year we're trying to take some days off! Crazy idea. Every week we take the hottest day and make that our day off to play. This week the hottest day of 2020 thus far was that day. 80 degrees and it was the perfect day to take the dinghy out with Reid (Garrett's brother) and Ellie, make some tacos in the gosun, and share some brews. Rejuvenated Garrett started a new project on the boat, building the electrical box. Sometimes you need to step away, even for a day, to be able to keep going. You get more work done that way too!
Thanks for joining us!

There was once an old sailor my grandfather knew Who had so many things which he wanted to do That, whenever he thought it was time to begin, He couldn’t because of the state he was in. He was shipwrecked, and lived on an island for weeks, And he wanted a hat, and he wanted some breeks; And he wanted some nets, or a line and some hooks For the turtles and things which you read of in books. And, thinking of this, he remembered a thing Which he wanted (for water) and that was a spring; And he thought that to talk to he’d look for, and keep (If he found it) a goat, or some chickens and sheep. Then, because of the weather, he wanted a hut With a door (to come in by) which opened and shut (With a jerk, which was useful if snakes were about), And a very strong lock to keep savages out. So he thought of his hut … and he thought of his boat, And his hat and his breeks, and his chickens and goat, And the hooks (for his food) and the spring (for his thirst) … But he never could think which he ought to do first. And so in the end he did nothing at all, But basked on the shingle wrapped up in a shawl. And I think it was dreadful the way he behaved - He did nothing but basking until he was saved.

Ha ha Garrett, did you really think that you could just slam together an ugly plywood box and be happy? Accept that you are a perfectionist and that you wouldn't be happy until that little box was pretty enough to go on your boat. Love you guys.

Thank you for another great video. It is important to always give yourself time to recharge on any project. While I have only worked on building two skiffs, I found that treating the project like a regular job (I hate to use that word) made it go much smoother and faster. Working 6 to 8 hours a day and then stopping, thinking and planning the next day's work and taking at least one day off each week made a huge difference in both the enjoyment of the work and the progress achieved. You two are doing a phenomenal job here so keep moving and you will be done sooner than you think. Take care and stay well.

Like You I'm always working on a project and I've found when i get stuck this works for me . 1) I put all the tools away 2) I clean the job site 3) Make a task list detailing materials i'm going to need 4) Walkaway from it for a while 5) After the air clears I come back and admire the good work in-place and try to focus on small pickup work items that have be bugging me remember : As the native said "You don't eat the elephant in one bite " Your boat is looking great , keep it up !

You're doing great! For the (un)-fortunately handy person, every big project reaches a point where it seems like you'll never finish. Just know everyone goes through the motivation slumps. If you haven't already, take 30 mins and do a brain dump.... make a list of all the little tasks. It clears your brain of all the things holding you back that you have to try to remember. I'm not a list person, but I've found it helps me when I reach that analysis paralysis stage (4 pages of items currently on JUST our sailboat re-power project). Cheers!

I hear you Colin. I am 62 with over 45 years of being a mechanic. My property and house need work, I have to leave stuff until the summer because of our weather. Summer is here and I want to be doing other things like biking. I find that I can look at a project for a silly amount of time planning it out instead of just doing it. I set my goal for the day, when done, get out for a ride. It is amazing how a couple of hours of cranking away can clear the mind. Starting tomorrow, the paint comes out. Groan!

Garrett jokes that we were 23 when we started this boat and he feels 63 now... progress not perfection and even 3 hours of work, if that's all you can muster, is more done than yesterday. I'm glad Garrett's allowing himself to have fun when we take time away. A year ago he'd be miserable at the boat or away because he'd constantly be thinking about the boat and that's NOT taking time away haha Balance right!?!? R

So last fall I bought a small Tanzer 16' boat in need of refreshing plus a beaten old trailer. Both need TLC but is fun to me. And yes, the house is serious needed TLC too. But, heck, fall will come and it can wait. The wife is not on the same groove though.... At all !

The cherry would make an awesome counter top in the galley. I made a cutting board of cherry, walnut and apple that's held up exceptionally well. It would also make great trim for your cabinets, door & drawer fronts. In addition to the floor. So many options, so cool to have that in the wood pile.

I built a boat and had some of the same feeling after a while. If you think too much about what has to be done it is over whelming. You have to take one small project and do it and forget about the rest. Boats are built one small project at a time. You have to live with the fact that boats are never really done.

You both need around a weeks holiday to re-charge your batteries, ideally in the boat but that will take too long to get it to a point where you can go sailing, so pack-up the truck and go for a break for a week. Yes, paint for now to get her out to sea. Always time for more wood work during annual haul-outs. Great to see some off time beach clean-up and picnic time. How dare Garret grab your cheek with that muddy grabber, hahaha. Looks like it was a lot of fun and relaxation. Doesn't look like that toilet is compatible with the "Squatty Potty" (tm). Oh the things we must give up for for life choices. Haha. Yeah, a shower would definitely be nice. Just rinsing off in sea water all of the time will tend to turn one's skin to a more leather like covering with all of that sun exposure. You know, a real salt tanned hyde type deal. Anyway, thanks for bringing us along again. Love the idea of cherry butcher-block counters in the galley.

You're not stalling or lacking energy, you're processing. I find that I do this when I have something like that sole to work on. You know, just KNOW, that if you don't think through all the other things that will go in there later that there's gonna be that one goddamned thing that you shoulda thought of that will require ripping up that sole that you just finished fitting. And that kinda thing is a true gumption trap; the gumption just drains right outta you. So don't beat yourself up at all. You're making this up as you go along and holding all the trade offs and dependencies in your head as you work. That takes time and care.

Paint and go. Don't import exotic wood. Maybe go get it from the source. If the sink can slide then so can the head and you have a nice shower.

From a project management point of view, if a task is required to get you to your goal (going sailing) it's said to be 'on the critical path' for the project. The interior panelling isn't on the 'critical path'.

cherry is not very rot resistant at all, because of all the sugars in the wood. If you use it coat it well with oil or varnish.

Try focusing on spending x time working on something rather than finishing x. Then you are never disappointed or worries about falling short.

Make a list of the most important things that need to be finished, so you two & you sailboat can be self sustainable out on the open ocean. When you lay down to go to sleep, have a pencil & notebook, & that is a good time to brainstorm how your going to do things. Write them down. When you are working don't stop until you have completed that particular task or job. Finish everything inside the boat, furniture, galley, head, sleeping quarters ect. Finish everything you need to put the rigging up. The way the world is going with covid & riots Martial Law could come into effect. It would be nice to at least see the two of you, your dog, & your sailboat make at least one long passage. Perhaps you could come to Hawaii, I live on Oahu. It always good to see a build get finished & someones dreams come to fruition. May peace, love health & happiness be abundant in your lives.

I enjoy watching your videos since quite some time and admire your boat building efforts. Now I have a question: I have difficulties to understand, why you didn’t leave room for a bigger size head and shower on this self designed boat? To me a decent size “bathroom” would be rather important particular when used as a permanent home. But I’m not a sailor at least not yet.😉

You might have mentioned it but are the remainder of the ports on back order? Did you say that they were actually made to order? It's the little jobs that slow things down but suddenly things come together and that's another area finished. Hopefully you don't just slow things down because the next job is a likely to be a bit of a pain. Yes we've all done it. Good progress and god work as usual. I know you are way ahead of this so hope to see a major update soon. Take care. You're some of the few who's enjoying Corona!

Hi Deluk, we have all the ports on hand but we were waiting for more butyl tape to arrive. We've had the material now to keep going but Garrett's not ready to continue yet as it's become a real pain to install them and he's started other projects to give him some space haha (in real-time he finished the last two earlier this week, you can check it out on our instagram) R

Maybe the last task for the day is to decide what gets done tomorrow. When that task is done, that day is over. For me, thinking about the whole to-do list was a good way to get overwhelmed. Of course there always will be a hell of a lot yet to get done. It's a boat. They live, and they evolve through time. They want you to work on some new project as long as she's floating. For me, "one day at a time" is the only way to stay sane. Especially on a boat, "done" is a word seldom spoken. It's not safe; gremlins might be listening. My strategy was to conceive of doing the jobs in layers of refinement. "Good enough is good enough for now. It will get better the next time through, more refined. Maybe I'll strive for shipwright quality when it stops being a thing, and starts becoming a work of maritime art. Or not. We're not Harlan and Wolfe. They can do it all at once. For me, it always took more than one time through. Knowing this, I didn't sweat not getting it "done" today. Not as much.
