Salt & Tar: Ep.132- How Do You Steer That Thing?

This is a Ruth-less episode... I'm out of town with my niece so Garrett tackles come solo projects AND does all the filming! He focuses on the boat's steerage. He shapes and mounts the rudder cheeks as well as transforms an old tiller, donated by a follower, into being the perfect helm for Rediviva. His goal was to be able to properly pilot ourselves to the haul-out dock. Under our own power and steering with a legitimate tiller we succeed! Stay tuned next week when we beach this ship.
Thanks for watching!

"Just a little wave." 🖐👋 LOL. There is no way that was 17 1/2 minutes. It went by much too quickly. Man, that tiller cleaned up so beautifully. Any wax/grease on the mating surfaces between the tiller and rudder? Moving under her own power to the haul-out dock... man, that has to be an awesome feeling to not be tug-boating her with the inflatable tender. CONGRATS! Haul-out, get her pressure washed, dried, painted, let the paint dry, and back in the water in roughly 60 hours, that's a lot of gettin'-er-done in rapid fasion. Hope the weather cooperated with you guys for the haul-out. See you next week. 😎🤙🤘✌🖖💪👏👏👏👍😉

Seriously, it's an excellent channel and if someone hasn't followed from the beginning there is a ton of addictive binge watching right there. Seeing them build the boat from scratch is fascinating, and there's something incredibly personal and endearing about the process. Even though I obviously wasn't involved in the build, I have this strange attachment to Rediviva because i've seen how she's all put together. It also sets this channel apart from the plethora of other boat DIY channels that exist. I'm totally cool with boat DIY, I follow a stack of those channels, but S&T is in a whole other league.

I would like to see two thick bronze reinforcing fender washers on the outside of the rudder cheeks to help hold it together over the tiller... That rudder head in a seaway is constantly stressed back and forth and in a knock-down can hugely stress the the small washers now on it...
