Salmon Fishing the Kenai River

Salmon Fishing the Kenai River
The last fishing day of our 2021 fishing adventure in Alaska. We were told we needed to check out the kenai river for salmon fishing. Under geared, no waders - lost, snooping around where we shouldn't - typical adventure learning on the go and having a blast!

Not bad for a day of not knowing what we are doing -- or WHO'S HOUSES we were snooping in!

Yup, long leader and 3/0 hooks. We put our weights on a three way swivel hanging from leader. So if you get snagged you will just lose the weights. Egg hook knot with a little yarn is great. Where were you? Near the campground or??

That's a Kens tackle rod! I was there two years ago spent two weeks watching the locals bring in Reds on either side of me I never did catch onto "flossing" I will definitely use a fly rod next time instead of getting an aching wrist, personally I much prefer fishing the Silvers.

I agree with you - just a weird thing - we did NOT have the right gear but renting a rod for half a day was better than nothing!

I'm one of those locals that'll show up beside you after you've been fishing for hours, and catch my limit in 15 minutes, while you're wondering what in the world I'm doing to hook them. Ask me, or any of my neighbors, and we'll show you how it's done. The best way for a tourist to catch reds is to take 5 minutes watching for the guys who are catching, then ask for a hand. We're friendly folks, for the most part. Until you go snooping around our houses trying doors. DON'T DO THAT! EVER! Unless you want to get poked full of holes. You'd be hard pressed to find a household here that doesn't have firearms, and snooping around the way you did will usually bring them out if someone sees you. That creepy feeling you had was for a good reason...

I was wondering the same thing why they were poking around like that. When we move, I'll take some pointers from locals

Yup, here in Alaska, if we suspect your car-jacking, we can shoot you right there next to our car. I dip-net for food - I floss for fun.

Not sure confident in the water yet at 52 years old. BUT, the fish are coming in next week. Going to be a massive run!! Let me know where this was please. Thx.

It’s NOT a “weird way to fish.” Flossing is an extremely logical method…but as you admitted, you don’t know what you’re doing. Shelia has caught more that a few by flossing….you were blessed to have her school you.
