Salman Rushdie and his wife Rachel Eliza Griffiths confront past attack in new memoir

Award-winning author Salman Rushdie describes his new memoir as a "reckoning." In 2022, he was stabbed in the neck and abdomen more than a dozen times in western New York and lost sight in his right eye. In Rushdie's new memoir, "Knife: Meditations After an Attempted Murder," he writes about the attack. He and his wife, poet and author Rachel Eliza Griffiths, join "CBS Mornings" for their first joint live interview.
Each weekday morning, "CBS Mornings" co-hosts Gayle King, Tony Dokoupil and Nate Burleson bring you the latest breaking news, smart conversation and in-depth feature reporting. "CBS Mornings" airs weekdays at 7 a.m. on CBS and stream it at 8 a.m. ET on the CBS News app.

@@fredyflinstone9522 "I grew up in a kind of environment in India where everybody’s kind of multilingual because you have to be. But basically the language we spoke at home was mostly not English, mostly Urdu." - Salman Rushdie Can't put the link, google it. Urdu and Hindi are two sociolects of the same language. The only difference is non-basic vocabulary, Urdu takes mostly from Persian and Arabic, and Hindi from Sanskrit (e.g. ilm vs vidya) because Urdu is used by Muslims as their native language or the lingua franca of Hindustani Muslims, and Hindi by Hindus. However music and bollywood heavily uses Urdu instead of Hindi since Urdu is seen to be more appealing to the heart -think of ghazals, while Sanskrit has too much of an intellectual or philosophical air. That said, in everyday speech ther two are practically the same, especially since Hindi does retain Perso-Arabic for many everyday things, the distinction is only crystal clear in the higher registers. I was aware that the "average Urdu speaker" would not like Rushdie, but I wanted to thank him in his mother tongue since one's mother tongue has a special place in one's heart. I was probably too eager to make him feel at home, to give him a nice gesture in a place where at that time there were barely any foreigners. Good thing, he surely doesn't remember every interaction, but I'll never know what really went through his head that time. BTW Urdu is not native to Pakistan, it originated in Central India, especially in Lucknow whose dialect is still held at the highest prestige among Urdu speakers. There are 50+ million native Urdu speakers in Bharat and 16 million in Pakistan, most of them muhajirs (1947 refugees from India).

What more do we need to know ( but there is much more ) about the toxic culture and relgion of the Iranian Mullahs than this vindictive, evil, energy they put out into the world. I have to admit to be overjoyed that Rushdie is processing what happened to him and turning it to his favor and standing up against the regime and powers that threatened him. Hes so well spoken with a fantastic capacity for listening and response. I don’t see any oddness with him being with a woman half his age and from a different culture. It’s all about a connection and compatibility in personality, temperament, interests, energies and a quality of spirit with the same ‘getup and go’. I'm not to keen on the way Gale interviews or maybe it's just this interview. She wasn't at all warm, I think is the adjective I'm looking for. Slightly blunt but maybe that's her way.

It happened in Australia too, a priest was preaching and another Muhammadian man came and stabbed him several times. In France, a priest was beheaded by another man from is lam ic religion

That doesn’t mean it is the same as the reasons behind those attacks. It is clear you know little about the issues. They are not called “Muhammadian”. They are called Muslims. Also, I am sure you don’t even know which book he wrote or what it was about which relate to the the attacks, which have occurred. Also, stop trying to spread misinformation and assumptions about other attacks. It really shows your bias. The incident in Australian was of an Assyrian priest, not a Christian one. The attacker was also not a man but a 16 year old boy. The police called it a terror attack, but we don’t know what caused it or if perhaps the priest had done something to the teenager….who knows. At this time, there doesn’t seem to be any information related it to being religiously motivated. I actually think the attacker is also of Assyrian descent, although he is Australian, too. You made it sound like a Muslim did it since are trying to connect it with this story. They aren’t even related stories! The issue in France was related to France’s political involvement in conflicts in Syria and Iraq. Yes, the priest was killed, but they did not behead him! They cut his throat, but there was no beheading! Stop spreading misinformation and conflating issues.

People can pretend they don't see the obvious all they want. Gale has to call out the one time they touch, very briefly. But if you live in the real world whatever they have going on between themselves it isn't what you'd call "Deep Real Love" probably an agreed arrangement
