I have owned several tikkas and sakos.I purchased the A7 roughtech several years ago it’s basically the same barrel and action.Had the same issue with accurracy,but i kept shooting it and about 200 rounds it started shooting moa and better.not a ideal situation,it is the only rifle from sako i own that i had to do that.Thanks for great reviews

I own a S20 hunter in 300wm it is a beautiful rifle to shoot with minimal recoil, it easily shoots sub MOA groups, the thumbhole stock is very comfortable and in my opinion helps accuracy. I also own a Lithgow LA105 in 6.5 which is a deadset laser to compare it against.

Thanks for the honest review, and showing your grouping, there is a clip where they show the release of the rifle and a few people shooting it but they don't show the target

I think the Tikka T3x is the ticket. I took one in 7mm-08 out of the box, scoped it, and took it to the range. I got a .75 group with Barnes TTSX 120 grain. As little I shoot it impressed the hell out of me. I can only imagine if someone reloaded for it. .50 or better or easily.

i have a precision s20 in 6.5 creedmoor and had exallant groups in 3 shot and 5 shot all under .5 moa but not tested factory ammo. i reload 140g burger vld target at 2.820 oal and 32g of adi2208 using redding dies. will be reviewing also. purchased 120g nosler bt to test with adi 2209. i also did barrel clean after every shot.

Hi Ozzie,great review,I have s20 in 308,my thoughts overall very similar.Long time sako user,there things to like and dislike about this system.Like yourself,I've shot a lot over years,as I'm getting older group sizes seem to get bigger.Biggest help I've found is holding down pressure on forend,not comfortable to do do on sandbags but group sizes reduce by 50%.More noticeable on heavier recoiling calibres.Noticed quite a muzzle flip on vid.Im getting sub half inch(3 shot) groups with handloads.Sorry,I don't mean to tell you how to shoot!Cheers

Sako S20 243. Sako 90 grain soft nose= 5 shots in approx 0.4 inch at 100 yards. If I could put a picture up I would. Great rifle for the money and should not be under estimated.

I had similar feelings with the review S20 rifle I shot as well. Shot brilliant with the Sako ammo, 1.3" at 300yds. But all the other brands of ammo I used were average at best.

I have my sako S20 in 6.5 creedmoor and must say i am not experiencing any accuracy issues , i have been shooting homeloads of 143g hornady ELD x with 41.5 g of reloader 16 and after a bit of experimenting with different seating depths i am sub moa out to 600 yards, its definatly a case of finding the right ammo for the job.

Damn, I've got to wonder if you have a hotline to me - this was exactly the model I was looking at for my next upgrade :) I will admit I'm a sucker for that thumb-grip stock; it reminds me of the old H&R Handi.

Sweet looking rifle. Like the design. I was reckon Tikka is not a poor man's Sako but rather the Sako is a very rich man's Tikka. But I would like a Lithgow given how smooth and solid they are plus accurate given the reviews. Love this review like the others. Some very nice rifle out now. Still I am happy with my Win70s Push Feeds in 24wssm and 330 Dakota. My BSA 222 is very smooth too.

How did you solve the problem with feeding cartridges from the store, or did it remain an unresolved problem? I just bought the same carbine in .308 caliber just yesterday and after watching your video I was a little puzzled, I made the right choice in general or not ))) Please tell me what barrel twist (barrel rifling pitch) the version has S20 hunter .308 and what weight does a bullet fly more heap?

Great and honest review. One would expect much better accuracy from a Sako! It’s a sad day when a Ruger American or Mosseberg, $300-400 rifles can out shoot a Sako. I appreciate your honesty, keep up the good work!

Wasn't expecting those groups 🤔 Honest as usual Oz , hard to explain . Maybe a bedding in period , just surprising given a Sako. Thumholes are not warranted on centerfire hunting rifles , blame Blazer 👌👌

Mate check the action screws I had similar problems with a steyr scout ... did up action screws and it pulled it in from 2 inch groups to 0.3 inch lol I understand the scout has more chance of a barrel touching than that rifle .. in which i assume must of been happenin as one group like 2 shots would be far left another 3 far right... so assuming in one of those instances the barrel was touching as i fired

Good objective review & just goes to show that even quality brands can throw the occasional lemon. Back to the shop with it...

What is the barrel tenon thread diameter and threads per inch. The threads that screw into the receiver. Consumers may need to replace the barrel after the warranty period and a usable thread for after market barrel makers is a go or no go for getting this rifle.

Why did rifle jump so badly when fired on that shootingrest ? Did you bother check the action screws ? Having that many fliers and still grouping 3 shots , makes one wonder if the optics or the shooter are completely in order ? Hae been shot the rifle, 5 rounds Lapua Cartridge, 150m 23mm .

Ive one in .308 with the 20 inch barrel, im using 150 grain hornady sst superformance and i must say ther going great, when i zeroed i was getting half in groups of three at 100 yards, this did separate more than i liked at 300 (6 inch groups) but i believe it was down to the rounds as opposed to the rifle, all in all im very pleased with it and will prob reload my own in time, 👍

The accuracy guarantee is 3 shot MOA. 5 shot guarantee only applies to a heavy barrel model.

I would think that it's just the case of finding the ammo it likes. What are the chances that it likes the first type of ammo you pick up?

@@marks1014 Just my opinion but at the range Ozzie was shooting out too and with the ammunition he used I would say that 90% of rifles on the Market would shoot better than that particular SAKO. I've never shot a rifle in my life which shoots Winchester ammunition even remotely acceptable , the stuff is shite however the rest of the brands he used were all decent brands and the point is he was only shooting out to 100m... I've used a SAKO 85 a fair bit and have a Tikka but that was dire in my opinion... :-)

Not the first review I've seen where they struggled to get under an inch groups, plus the fact its on the heavy side for a hunting rifle.

Entire issue with tests like this that rifles are individuals. And I dont doubt that other might cherry pick rifles for review. Give it a couple more groups and it will probably shrink alot. Seen this with sako rifles before, and other makers to. S20 is premium by american standards but are mostly low-mid range in europe.

One other note When I tested Berger 130’s, they were .5 but would get the odd flyer (3+” away) and I have found that with every caliber I have tested factory Bergers: inconsistent

I'm a huge fan of both sako and tikka. Owned several of each. All have shoot extremely well. It's weird that one doesn't. I read alot of people talking about how the tikkas are better. Here's the deal. Tikka is made by sako, in the sako factory right next to sakos. Action and barrel are exactly the same. In every detail. Sako wasnt as popular here in the states, mostly because of the high price tag. So they took the same barrel and action and put them in cheaper stocks, and lowered quality control to get prices down. And tikka was born. In the factory every sako is hand checked and checked by zeiss machines. Over 200 check points. Plus shot by a shooter to verify the 5 shot group and the rounds are loaded 30% over. Tikka just gets the hand inspection and 3 rounds.

Same here, zero problems with accuracy. Few corrections to information stated here: Sako and Tikka rifles are indeed manufactured in the same gun factory in Riihimäki, but excluding the barrel manufacturing, their components and actions aren't the same. Production lines are independent e.g. Sako 85 actions come in six different sizes, whereas T3X has just one action size, hence the X in its current model name. T3X heavy barrel models, as Sako rifles, are tested for five shot MOA accuracy for 100 meters by factory specialists, other T3X models with three shot testing. Precise quality measuring is performed for all produced receivers and bolts.

A Gun shop I visited called the S20 a pimped Tikka! I have not shot it, only handled it in a shop. I liked it. SAKO smooth bolt, very Nice adjustable cheek rest and a very good grip, but Plastic feeling. If it was 500 grams lighter with oportunity for top feeding the magazine, I would have bought it. Ended up with the X bolt pro SS tungsten instead. Love this rifle but cant get my head around how Browning made such a heavy trigger with no shoe grip pattern. It breaks perfectly with no creep, but it it just something with the trigger feel I dont like. Waiting for an aftermarket spring.

It is not really pimped Tikka. Accuracy wise Tikka and Sako are quite similar, the main differences comes from materials used. Sako tends to make more sturdy rifles with better overall quality which makes them also heavier. Tikka then again makes rifles using more modern plastic with tad less overall quality, which makes them lighter. Now to understand the quality differences with these 2, i guess i compare S20 to Tikka T3 Tac as they are in the same category. S20 is designed for long distance competitive shooting and costs 2200 Dollars (about). Tikka T3 Tac starts from 1400 Dollars and goes up to 2000 Dollars, depending on the setup, and it is designed for law enforcement usage. So when i say Sako has better overall quality and they make more rugged rifles, i say so knowing that Tikka is also very rugged and high quality rifle. It is like trying to find differences between 2 gold bars =D

Tikka and Sako is the same factory.. probably the same barrels even. The S20 is just a hybrid Sako 85 and Tikka t3.

Recently bought a new tikka T3X .270. Cant get it group at all, even with a $2000 scope and 6 different kinds of ammunition. I wouldn't get tikka or a sako again.

@@jamesschmidt6788 there is always rifles that are bad. I dont know about your specifics, but a scope wont make a rifle group better. They test ALL rifles in the factory with 3 shot groups. There should be a card with information about load and group size. You have something loose or something you do wrong when shooting. T3X and SAKO is known to be good rifles so your case is nothing i would put against them.

Is the trigger guard plastic?

What about the Sako MOA guarantee?

Those groups made me sit up and take notice,..but not because they were good. I am surprised at that,, as I guess you were too. I wonder if SAKO would like to check out that rifle and let us know, why we should buy an S20.

Hi Ozzie , i enjoy watching lots of rifle reviews but have been surprised that a lot of them don’t seem to perform as accurately as they claim . This might be comparing apples with oranges but a lot of guys can hit pellet on pellet at 40 yards with Air rifles ( not me though Lol ) , and i’m pretty certain they are no more skilled than yourself ! Are firearms generally a bit more inaccurate than Air rifles or is it the longer distance 100 yards plus that opens up the groups ? Kind regards

Accuracy is a function of distance - a good rifle is sub minute-of-angle, or less than one 60th of one degree. At 100m that is about 29mm, or 1.14 inches. At 200m you double that measurement (2.28"), and at 400m you double it again (4.56"), and so on. Realistically speaking 1MOA is plenty for a hunting rifle.

I have the S20 in 7mm rem mag. I like to develop 2 different hand loads and have a cartridge tuned for long distance targets and hunting/ general use. When I first bought the gun I was running factory loads because I didn’t have the kit for loading. Die’s, brass etc. the gun shot pretty average with factory loads and I was a little disappointed. But I eventually got the kit needed to do hand loads and tuned the cartridge for the tightest groups possible. I can now shoot sub MOA 5round groups at 100m and 1 MOA at 200m. Might not be competition grade but it’s above average. You just need to take the time to find the load that works best in the rifle.

S20 Sako are definitely "competition" grade, if not, it's the loose nut behind the trigger.

A question just out of internet, how hard is it to find ammo in oz right now? Almost impossible to find ammo here right now.

@@chrispeterson1247 Thats a shame. we had a short period of people buying in bulk but because australia has had so few cases of Covid, life is pretty much back to normal. in my state for example we havnt had a single case for months. plus we have significantly less firearm owners in australia. and you need an active firearm licence to purchase ammunition.

Well, I WAS going to buy one in 6.5 PRC, but don't want to take a chance now after seeing this video.

I have one with leupold scope 3-15 had. 0.9 factory ammo at worse. 7:19 My hand loads are 0.3 inch. My Sako hand loads are 0.33 inch .85 for. Factory 243 in Sako A7.

When/if I get one of these and it grouped like that I’d be so pissed.

How much is it

@OhSoddit if you live in South East Queensland just head over to Cleaver Firearms, there plenty of ammo there but they don't stock the sako ammo

Wow, was not expecting that accuracy issue. I had watched good reviews from the UK before, but they where all using Suppressors and that would likely change your barrel harmonics a good bit.

Harmonics perhaps but i bet on recoil. Some people cant handle recoil at all. They are to used to do free recoil on bench, and when there is some kick they are nog as good at handling it, making the rifle recoil diffrent each time.

They are dead accurate. Get a few shots down the range to wear the barrel in a bit, pick the ammo your rifle likes or re-load and you will get it down to 0.5 " group no problem.

Great review. Honestly, I don't know how Sako got such a great reputation for accuracy. I have a Finnlight in 7mm08 that has never impressed on the accuracy department, although it has other virtues. I doubt there are actually that many Sako 85's out there that can honestly meet that 5-shot sub MOA level, especially once the barrel gets hot. I would have liked you to have removed the barrelled action and had a look at the recoil lug design- the Finnlight doesn't have much of a lug, quite different from a Tikka. I suspect that does nothing for accuracy.

Hornady precision hunter 143 grain try that and do another review

I would think that there is something wrong with that aprticular rifle or scope.

nah, theres not. Probably just a new barrel, SAKOs mass produced rifles are not really match quality nowdays. Better then many cheap american makes sure, but in european standards its quite modest. Shoot 5 more groups and the barrel will probably gather up.

Just a silly question. Why do they call a 30-O6 a 30 odd six? That to me is like calling a 308 a 3 odd 8. This must be just an American thing I’m guessing.

It actually called thirty aught six not odd. Aught meant zero in old days I guess.

Isn't anyone going to point out the obvious? The puny Steiner 2-8x42mm scope - how do you think that helped groups at 100y? My 6.5CM Sako has a 5-25x52 Swaro and shoots sub 0.5 MOA all day.

FWIW, I average ~0.6 MOA shooting off of bags and/or bipod, albeit with handloads.

I just bought one 6.5 CR and was virtually bullet hole in bullet hole in 10 shots and was .1 the next 10 Use quality ammo like Hornady 147 Match Find the factory ammo that the barrel likes $200+ rings and the scope you choose HAS to cost at least the price of the rifle ANY rifle you buy Don’t Miss!!!

Any factory rifle is a lottery! Buy 5 & keep the best! 😛 or find the best gunsmith & build a custom rig... it's where most accuracy chasers end up!

@@davep3163 I just buy Tikkas. Seems to stack the odds in my favour. Although I have my eye on a Howa mini in .223- should make a nice walking varminter.

I expected the Sako to preform better. However as a Tikka fan it’s going to take a lot for me to purchase a different centre fire brand

Love the reviews as always. In this case i still love my black wolf in 308.

Try changing up your hold with the trigger finger. I see a lot of the time, right handed shooters tend to pull slightly right when fully curling their trigger finger in that way. Shots also seem consistent with this problem. Good shot otherwise. I would recommend using just the tip of the trigger finger. Hope this helps.

a savage axis for $300 us at walmart shoots sub moa with just about anything you feed it. To bad because i really like every detail about the S20 presion in 300 win mag. Looks like i might just deal with a cheap sloppy action and get an axis and drop it in an oryx chassis. would be cheaper than the s20 and i wont be dissapointed in accuracy.

I have S20 Hunter in 6.5 Creedmoor. My rifle is very, very ammo picky, to my annoyance. The only ammo I can shoot one or sub-MOA is Norma Golden Target 143 grain. I have not tried TRG, but anything else I've tried is between 6 -1.5 MOA. So, I wish I could be more impressed with it; my version actually sucks.

I’ve got an M18 in .308 with a wildcat moderator, & a Zeiss V4 scope, damn rifle is amazing for the price.! I paid £675 including the rings & 3 packs of RWS ammo.! 🇬🇧

My mate has a Mauser M18 in 308 & we were both very surprised at how good it is for $900! it groups great with most factory ammunition his farther just put a deposit on one last week as-well.

3 holes touching and two fliers, I would chalk that down to the shooter (regardless of skill), or what you got Lucky 3times in a row?

Great review.....I appreciate the honesty and objectivity. I was very interested in this model, but after giving it some thought, I believe that I prefer the simplicity and economy of a basic Tikka T3x or perhaps one of the enhanced Tikka rifles. I actually dislike all the unnecessary modularity of the Sako S20......more trouble than it is worth.

If you want same accuracy but like simplicity, there are Sako 85 models (there are many). Difference between Tikka and Sako rifles are mainly with overall quality and weight. S20 is designed for competitive long distance shooting, while 85 models are for hunting so they are not about modular design. Enhanced Tikka models like Tac are even more modular and complex as they are designed for law enforcement use and thus resembles more Ruger Precision rifles.

Glad I watched this review mate, was about to pull the trigger on buying one. They look amazing but I couldn't justify spending that much on a hunting rifle if it can't even make sub moa at 100 yards on a hunting cartridge, especially if I'm trying to shoot deer out to 400+ yards/meters. I own Tikka T3X, ordered S20 in 30.06. I will let you know about accuracy. But it is the same company and factory Sako/Tikka, and S20 is hi-end T3X. There has to be something wrong with this scope/ rifle. There is no way it shoots so badly ....

I'ts kinda too heavy to be a normal walkabout hunting rifle, but too light, especially the barrel profile to be a precision range rifle.....

So many better shooting rifles out there for multiple hundreds less straight out of the box. Smooth actions arent the be all to end all accuracy is way more important
