As a person who is bad at fighting games, watching high level play without commentary? I wouldn't even know what was going on. It'd feel the same as when I play randos who beat me helplessly and I stand there like "But WHY am I losing?" Just like watching high level speedruns without commentary. You can't even go "OHHHH that was a frame perfect wall-glitch" unless someone tells you. I need the commentary.

The title of that paper "Consequences of Erudite Vernacular Utilized Irrespective of Necessity: Problems with Using Long Words Needlessly" was clever, the author makes the same statement twice, once using more fancy language and once using more plain language, and by doing so highlights the issue straight away.

Funny, i remember Aris on stream during last year's Tekken world tour finals. he noticed how differently spag and tasty steve use the make some noise line. Spag used it with a please and Aris said that you dont beg the crowd to do that. command them like how tasty steve does it

I think that part of the problems with general esports is that there is no way to spectate traditional esport games like you can with fighting games. In FGs, you always have 100% of the context other viewers have as far as what is visually happening on screen. However, with other games, shooters in particular, is that it's so hard to capture the action, or talk about what 10 people are doing all at once before things start to blow up. This means that commentating and spectating go hand in hand, and is much more of a team effort than two or three dudes talking about what's happening. Another problem is the nature of team over 1v1 games. In 1v1 games, it's easy to talk about individual people if you've done research and watched their matches. However, with a team, this is much more difficult because even where you can research individuals, how they play together is often not something you can see up until matches. Scrims are usually private in esports titles, and there is a lot of secrecy because unlike FGs where the meta stays the same, and everyone builds each other up, due to patch cadence, meta reading and meta defining are both active parts of the competition. Because of this, most casters don't have access to real footage of the team playing that isn't from the last week, or last event, not to mention how differently players play when they have a team they've rehearsed plays with versus just playing pugs compared to FG players playing pugs. :Lastly, FG events always happen in sequence. Someone does a move, blocked or hit, the other player counters or the hitter does their combo into whatever situation follows afterwards. Occasionally people trade, but those moments are hardly significant, since the followup is usually a reset to neutral, or one person finding the better option, then that's all they need to talk about. In most esports titles, many things are happening concurrently, and it is extremely difficult to pick out the exact most important event for any given moment. For example, if two people get shot in Valorant simultaneously, what can you even say, especially when in a game where things are happening concurrently, the Jett is also already dashing in to cause chaos 1 second before KJ ulti goes off and breach is doing some flash to help the Jett get in. Essentaill, the large majority of esports titles provide unique challenges that no game in the FGC has to deal with. Most esports being team games with social dynamics involved, casters having to have synergy with not just their co casters, but spectators as well, and the fact that everything tends to happen at once makes esports very hard to commentate well. You really need a full team of well prepared individuals to create a good esports cast, not just two people who like a game a lot and synergize with each other.

That's an interesting point. RTS games can be affected by this as well because players are multitasking faster than casters can keep up, sometimes. Makes me wonder if those games would benefit from post production commentary where the commentators comment on footage that's already been organized and edited. You lose strong genuine reactions to live events, but you gain a huge amount of legibility.

The Black Plague were such an iconic duo in the SSB Ultimate community, they were just wandering around with their minds without being obnoxious or disrespectful while still being able to follow the match in some kind of way and come up with the funniest catch phrases or exclamations, similarly to what Aris did for Tekken 7 or Bobby Scar did for SSB Melee. Damn, great people and great times...

Love when my commentators are just big ole fans that get to talk about hype matches. A lot of the FGC commentators do this right. Love it. I think it's why Joe Rogan was really popular at the beginning of the UFC. He was a fight nerd having fun and I think it's the same reason most people dont enjoy a lot of football commentators. They are to professional they have way to many opinions.

I've thought about the "Yes and" idea when it comes to commentary. There are exceptions, right? I've commentated small locals with a less experienced player that will give incorrect information. I feel it's my responsibility as the more experienced player to correct them as to not give any misinformation to viewers. How would y'all handle the situation?

Not a commentator, but I've been in similar situations where I felt like someone needed to be corrected (a boss, a co-teacher, a fellow panelist, etc.) but I didn't want to swoop in too hard on the person in front of colleagues or an audience. Usually, I go with, "Oh, that's interesting. I had the impression that it was . Can we get some confirmation/clarification so I make sure I have my facts straight?" This way, you take heat off the person and make it more about getting to the truth. I take extra effort not to shame a person because sometimes people just have a wrong idea and they're not out to be malicious or anything. I've been wrong myself, so it's not like I want to be put on blast for an honest mistake. Even when being gracious, I only pull this off when I think there's something important enough to warrant correcting. Trying to harp on others for every last detail isn't a good look, nor does it help you build trust in a community where you have to work alongside people. With my aforementioned comment on clarification, it will only be effective because people I work with trust that I am out to get things right rather than bring other people down to make myself look good. So some social capital is important there. It's less effective around people whose egos are so weak that they can't even handle fact-checking, though. Professionally and personally, I try to avoid such individuals.

You can correct information or steer the viewer towards the right answer without a hard "no that's wrong" But yeah it's definitely important to make sure the commentary isn't mostly misinformation

A commentator commenting about a commentary video this is so meta....more than the MvC2 character select screen.

It really depends on how good i am at the game i'm watching. If i'm good at it im only interested in commentary from other people who are also really good at it as well, in such cases i've little interest in hearing basic play by play commentary as i'm perfectly capable of understanding what's happening on my own. If im new to a game or only at the beginner level having some hype dude doing basic play by play is incredibly helpful and definitely boosts my viewing experience. A solution would be to have different streams commentating the same match, one stream is for beginners and one stream is for people that are at least intermediate at the game. Obviously i recognize that for smaller esports like fighting games having multiple commentating desks might be too costly and maybe i'm also in a very small minority feeling this way. I haven't played Dota for years but back when i did, i found myself often just muting the commentators because all they did was scream(trying to hype things up ofc). There were a couple of exceptions though where i left the commentating on like when Merlini(ex pro) for example was commentating. A problem with SFV that dota doesn't have is that if you mute the commentators you also mute the ingame sounds. In dota you can keep the ingame sounds while muting the commentators when watching a match from inside the game client. I've found myself wanting to mute SFV streams but keeping them on regardless because i want the ingame sounds, watching a totally silent stream is too much basically. There are commentators i like and would like to hear more from and there are commentators id rather stay quiet.

Dash on the LCS desk does that anchor voice, but I dont feel that disconnect when he talks. I dont know if theres a nuance to it, but I guess its a case by case basis.

He's a host, rather than a commentator, so it fits his role much better. You'll notice most of the time he's directing questions to analysts who will talk normally, or to players and interviewers or whatever, who will talk normally. His job is more or less to be the hype man.

Man, just coming to this video now and I'm just thinking of Yipes in the DBFZ national championships. Dude stressed repeatedly he hasn't been playing for a while, and while he brings the hype well, it feels like hes not into it. He was paired with good co-commentators and it was entertaining, but man.

​@@lilacrain3283 Yeah, to be fair it was rougher in the start, by the end he had kind of brushed up or was at least faking it well, and he was *full-on* bringing that hype only he can bring. Like no hate on Yipes, dude carried a LOT of the commentary in those tournaments, and did it without a strong knowledge of the current state of the game. But for me it underscored how important it is to get more/new commentators who are knowledgeable AND hype. A couple of the US commentators were doing their best, but none of them felt very polished. Of course, I'm kinda sleeping on Tyrant and Damascus just bringing it every session for the Europe leagues, lotta great work there.

I appreciate commentators cus I could never do that I think I’m actually too analytical i would scare away everyone watching with frame data and complex terms. I also love using complex language too.

re: the comment about game knowledge for commentators at 16mins onwards. I think for fighting games it's particularly important to know because so much of what is happening in the player's heads is based on their - really really detailed and non-obvious, frequently! - understanding of the details of the situation. Knowing that a situation is a spacing or frame trap, the kind of advantage you're getting, that kind of thing is much much less obvious in a fighting game than seeing somebody hit a sick nasty series of headshots. The more that player expertise is about structured situational knowledge the more value you get from an expert commentator! And, on top of that, fighting game extreme performance also frequently requires expertise to understand. Incredible timing - eg hitting a series of 1frame links - is not necessarily obvious to the non expert viewer or even a mid level player who doesn't know the character. Incredible accuracy in raw mouse movement or incredibly well executed mass micromanagement, on the other hand, is a much easier form of expertise to assess for a non-expert. So an expert commentator gets you hype about both the mechanical and conceptual parts of the contest! Again of course people need to separate "is it possible to be a good commentator without much expertise" - to which the answer is always yes, if you are charismatic and entertaining enough - from "is it really helpful to have expertise and is it a requirement for doing certain kinds of commentary".

When you disagree with the other commentator, you can always say "That might be true but, [info about the other team / player]" (Make sure your info has the same tone and feel as what they said.)

The commentators are usually former players in sports, but with gaming being a young genre and most old timers moving on from their game because of the game losing relevance or simply becoming coached or streamers. Theres a lack of competent commentators. None of the rules will ever change in football, football doesnt have a shelf life. But even league of legends will fade from relevance at a point and patches and meta changes constantly. Only on rare occasions do you get things like yipes, mike ross, combofiend, sajam, t. Steve etc.

I feel like most see this as fine. Might depend how big your channel is also. If you take footage from tournament like of spookyschannel. Ask him first and see what they say. They wont mind if you send a dm with this question. But there are people that take footage from the sfv replay and talk about it as part od their content and I havnt seen issues about that. Most issues are: direct copying of streams before the owner could upload it themselves. Stealing ideas or tutorials and making them thr same and ussing their orignal footages. Specially when the channel that does it is bigger and thus actively steals a portion of the potential viewers. So personally I think your idea is fine, I cant see it take away potential revenue or credit.

12:30 James Chen in particular really struggles to drop a thought when it's not important. As recent as the Asia CapCup qualifiers he spent an entire round talking about something unrelated and his co commentator had no choice but to just sit in silence as the match went on. I'm sure he's aware of his habit but it's off putting to see him continue to prioritise his thoughts over what is happening on screen.

i might be in the minority on this but i really wish i had the option to not have commentary in fighting games. I guess I'm just a boomer because when you asked "have you ever watched top 8 without commentary" I went "YES and I miss it". I used to watch melee sets and AC matches in the 2000's when they were just uploaded raw to youtube. This isn't a big deal with bigger, well-produced events/streams, but for smaller ones, sometimes the commentary just sucks?? people never talking about the game, they don't know shit, missing hype stuff, zero analysis. The worst thing tho is when this bad commentary just prevents me from paying attention to the match myself. And sometimes I DO just wanna watch gameplay footage. If only streaming services have multiple audio streams or some ability to choose whether certain things are there like commentary.

There was a Twitch Rivals event for a niche melle slasher game called Mordhau. None of the commentators knew much about the game at all, and it made the viewing experience pretty bad for people who cared a lot about the game. The whole event was kind of a shit show in general because they invited a bunch of variety streamers, with the exception being a player from one of the top teams in the world. Dude with 5k hours in the genre vs a bunch of fairly new players didn't make for a very exciting tournament.
