This has always been my very favorite classical piece. I was amazed and delighted to discover this beautifully photographed live performance of Saint-Saens 4th piano concerto performed masterfully by Lorraine Min and conducted memorably by the fantastic Tania Miller. I just wish I had been there on that night. I have been asking the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra to present it for years. The first movement is stunning in its understatement and gentleness. In the second movement the recurring melodies found throughout the piece become bold and triumphant. I don’t care to argue about which of the five piano concertos by Saint-Saens is the masterpiece. I’m more interested in experiencing what touches the human heart. This is some beautiful and very memorable music. And what an ending.

I do think Saint-Saens is underrated. He is often regarded as being a lightweight. No, the underlying structure is there, and the developing of themes is there. Perhaps, typically of French Romantic composes, this is not obvious, but both are there. Plus, there is the surface beauty which is rather obvious. I like all 5 of his piano concertos, but the 4th is my favorite.

About forty years ago my classical record club's monthly selection was Philippe Entremont playing Saint-Saens' piano concertos No. 2 and No. 4. I wore out the LP. I fell in love with love with the two piano concertos. Later, when CDs came out, I purchased a two-CD set of Entremont playing all five of Saint-Saens' piano concertos and play them often while walking with my mp3 player. I must agree with other commenters that Concertos 1,3 and 5 are also great concertos. Saint-Saens is by far France's greatest classical composer and his music should be played much more in concert halls. His melodies are beautiful.

A musician who at the age of 8 played recitals in which people could call out for him to play one of the 32 Beethoven Sonatas, Camille Saint-Saens had an auspicious beginning to the music world. His music is always sane and beautiful. He is no Beethoven. He is just a magnificent composer and, in his day, a fantastic pianist. He is highly underrated as a composer and people need to recognize his depth of ability. His piano concertos are indeed underrated and they shouldn't be.

The antiromantic Saint Saens writes here a specific kind of masterpiece, something which is not romantic, but looks rather like variations on a choral-type theme (this appears clearly in the end). The pianist is in the right tone: she does not drive the attention upon her, but is in perfect synergy with the orchestra.

I am a great admirer of the music of Saint-Saens. I see that some have mentioned that Saint-Saens is to some extent underrated. I agree. The common reference to Saint-Saens as the "French Mendelssohn" doesn't help, as I think Mendelssohn is underrated as well. There was a dedicated and developing classical practice during the 19th century; and can be traced from Schubert through Mendelssohn and through Saint-Saens. Wonderful performance. The piece requires both a crispness of execution and full command of the tonal potential of the instrument. Mission accomplished.

I grew up with that same recording by Entremont, which our family got from the Wordl Record Club some time in the 1960s. Like you I nearly wore the record out. I've always liked this no.4 better than no.2. When I was 17 the contrary motion octaves in the last movement were the most electrifying thing I had ever heard.
I love the Saint-Saens concerto's. It's deeply emotional, beautiful played. The French composers are also top. It's wonderful
I had never thought of Saint-säens as a genius. This concert, however, had the power of making me reconsider my mind. It's a superb masterpiece. This perception has longed for decades. This is a concert basically based on a single theme. If such a commposer is not a genius, I don't know anymore what a genius is.

Personnaly I love Saint-Saens music too. But it is true that he was known as the " more genius composer inside the ungenius " or " the biggest composer inside the little one" !!!

Saint Saens greatness has always made dummies of his critics.
Love this concerto... But everybody is talking about 1,2,4,5... Poeple, please take some time to listen the third, its a really stunning masterpiece, it has so unusual melodies, great epic and powerfuls moments... One of my favorite classical pieces of all time

I have yet to see a video performance of his 3rd here on KZread It is indeed a remarkable piece of music and most certainly underrated!
I wonder one of the reasons this concerto is rarely performed is because of its difficulty ... Ms Min delivers!!
A difficult composer to play and she does it so excellently. The orchestra under Miller is well adjusted to the pianiste's style and tempi throughout too. A truly great performance.
What a treat!
Can you imagine the tremendous joy of the composer hearing and seeing such a brilliant and perfect fluid presentation of his composition?
Wow!!!! Standing ovation!!! Bravo!! Amazing performance!!
At the top of my personal list of favorite piano concertos with the other 4 composed by Saint-Saens.
It has been a long time since I heard Lorraine Min play! She is the full package! Sensitive playing, strong knowledge of the music, beautiful looks and very charming. Thank you so much for posting this!
A polished and technically brilliant performance of the Saint -Saens Piano Concerto No.4, by Lorraine Min.
So touching, so beautiful, all the comments.

Your symphonies are nice too. They tell a 'story', and that's great.
Every time I hear this magnificent concerto I question why it is not played more often in concert halls (at least where I live), other than it's fiendishly difficult for the pianist. Bravo Lorraine Min and the VS!
What a magnificent performance. Ms. Min was in the zone. A perfect connection between soloist and orchestra.
Perfection indeed !
Truly, a dynamic performance!
Saint - Seans wrote this beautiful piece! Ms Min’s playing is wonderful! Enjoy the piece and ignore the critics! Intellectual fashions come and go! Good music is always good music!
Congratulations Lorraine; both for your channel and for your performance.
An autstanding performance from both the soloist and the orchestra. The symbiosis is perfect.
Saint Saens is great, indeed, and this splendid rendition of his 4th proves it. We, who love Music, should be given more chances of enjoying his music.
The fourth pino concerto of Saint Saens is perhaps the most original of the five. I always perceived it as a vast elaboration of choral-llike themes. Lorraine Min, a pianist whom I did noy know, I must confess iy, is an extrordinary interpret of this rigorous concertto.
Great rendition of this concert by Lorraine Min. She plays vigorously and is always in command.
I like this performance
I liked the idea of the composer in the way he connected all the movements in one single piece...
beautiful performance of this two artists and orchestra..
A gem of performance by Lorraine and the orchestra!
I had the distinct pleasure of meeting her sponsor on an Amtrak train trip who turned me onto this incredible musician. I thank Gene and am so pleased to have heard this amazing talent and orchestra.
Superb performance- and the key central section (around 12:00) taken with great romantic spirit as it should be. This compares with my favorite recordings: Collard/Previn, Malikova/Sandering and Casadesus/Bernstein! Thank you for this wonderful performance of one of Saint-Saens' finest concerti!
What I find fantastic about this recording is the pianist’s clarity. That’s something that’s really lacking from the others here on KZread imo. I haven’t heard of her before, but will definitely be checking out her other recordings. Great work!
Just beautiful all around. Superb playing by everyone here.
I'v ealways loved this concerto. how come nobody play it?
The G minor is most often played. However, this one is gem.
For fans of the last half of the concerto, it starts here 13:45 . Movements three and four. III. Scherzo in C Minor; IV. Finale in C Major
6:48 Just beautiful !

Saint-Saens' best piano concerto. Beautifully played.
Quelle magnifique prestation.
Lorraine does justice to Saint-Saens!
Nice!
Magnificent!

Thank you Miss. Min. This was my first encounter with the Saint-Saens Piano #4, the Victoria Symphony, and your talent. I enjoyed your playing with the orchestra, not over the orchestra. Very nice partnership between all performers. I think I need another listen, or two.
I love this piece and Min does a great job!
Beautiful ~~~♥♥♥
I played this with you this weekend in the Clinton Symphony. I was simply amazed at your talent and performance!
Magnificent rendition of this superb work. Thank you for the discovery
Once Ms. Min set the pace for the theme of the Allegro in the second movement, I knew we were in for it. Met the extreme challenge of this daunting composition with both grace and power. Bravo.
Wonderful piece and a sensational performance!
This is my favorite of the Saens Piano Concertos; it's his most original piano concerti in my opinion.
Bravo ! Wonderful performance !
It`s so great. Thank you very much.
Fine performance of a very good, underrated piece. Such great tunes and superb architecture. A ‘proper’ piano concerto!!
Good, strong playing where needed; sensitive with feeling at others.. Enjoyed thoroughly. Would like to hear more of her playing.
Wow! Stunning performance from Ms. Min in one of the toughest concertos in the entire repertoire to coordinate with the orchestra. Tania Miller was with her every step of the way. I thoroughly enjoyed this and I have heard some abysmal performances of this concerto from men here on KZread, proving once again that it often takes a woman to do a man's job. At the end Ms. Min kinda looks stunned, like she's thinking to herself, "We actually pulled it off." Which they did, in spades!
Incredible !!! - Thank You
Well, this is exactly what i call "a jewel""
Espectacular, grandiosa.
Het is een van mijn favoriete pianoconcerten. Zoekend in You Tube kwam ik deze uitvoering tegen. Verrassend! JUST AMAZING!!!! IT IS THE MOST BEAUTIFUL ALIVE VIDEO FROM THIS GORGEOUS CONCERTO...
Splendid!
beautiful Lorraine, Saint-Saens to the true classic listener is not unpopular as remarked below comments. this sounds similar to the Organ Concerto the accomplished listener and the composer is not underrated at all.
excellent!
My favorite Saint Saens Piano Concertos are the 2 and the 4; the 5 is next, but 1 and 3 are cool too.
Applause covers the last minute of the video.
Mon préféré parmi les concertos de Saint-Saens...
I have several recordings of this concerto, the oldest is with Alfred Cortot, another almost as old is with Alexander Brailowsky and this performance by Ms. Min is as excellent as those of the pianists of the past !

The Saint-Saëns piano concertos used to be played in Brazil but I have never been to a concerto where this concerto was played live. In São Paulo it was just played once or twice many years ago.

Magical....!!!
Saint-Saens' music is very interesting; there is a lot to learn from him (as a music professor). Some people think he's superficial, but so what! He covered all the spectrum of classical music, and his works are very remarkable.
@morphixnm

I think those who say his music is superficial can"t hear the clarity of his genius.
Parabéns Lorraine Min, video com som e imagem de primeira, (congratulation here from Brasil)

The No. 4 is my favorite of the Saint- Saens piano concertos. After listening to it on my car's CD (Phillipe Entremont), I put it into my computer at home and came up with Lorraine Min's simply masterful rendition of it. I was just mesmerized just as I am listening and watching it now. Oh, Ceil!
