SAINT PAUL DE VENCE | Hilltop Village in the South of France

SAINT PAUL DE VENCE, FRANCE: Exploring one of the oldest medieval villages in the South of France, the amazing hilltop commune of Saint Paul de Vence on the beautiful French Riviera.

I caught a local bus from Nice to Saint Paul De Vence in the South of France to explore a tiny little village perched on a hilltop overlooking luxury villas and Châteaus on the French Riviera. It really is a different world up there!
Walking through the narrow stone streets of Saint Paul de Vence was an enjoyable experience and although the commune is visited by millions of tourists every year it hasn’t lost its appeal or charm. Once through the defensive wall I got lost in the maze-like alleys and passageways, and although it’s great to be lost in such a fabulous place it isn’t long before you stumble upon one of the busier streets again - back to civilisation perhaps!
I walked the main street Rue Grande, climbed up onto the ramparts to admire sweeping views across the Côte d'Azur, photographed the Fontaine de Saint-Paul-de-Vence, visited the tomb of local painter Marc Chagall, browsed paintings and artwork in a trendy shopping street and toured the village church which is the tallest building in the commune. For such a small place there really is so much to see - and it’s a pleasure to see it!
I should also say that because Saint Paul de Vence was built on a hilltop there are magnificent views across the rolling fields and nearby mountains - both from a few places inside the commune and the ramparts that surround it. There’s nothing better than to be walking along a narrow street and then suddenly get a glimpse of those views when you least expect it - watch the video to see what I mean!

Oh wow, this is my kinda place. I loved how you could walk up on those walls and over that arch too, despite the lack of safety railings. I couldn't help but giggle over the entourage from the cruise ship (when you travel as much as us, you just know when they're from a cruise ship) and ironically I was just thinking, it reminded me of Kotor in Montenegro when I was in a walled city, a cruise ship had docked, and cruise staff were going round with the number paddles with hoards following them... cut to the next scene where you say it reminds you of Dubrovnik. Not the same, but I saw huge similarities between them both and they're so close to one another. Can fully understand why the bus was packed getting up there as it's an adorable place to have a nosey around!

Yes I'd say Kotor and Dubrovnik are very similar - you certainly know when there's a cruise ship in! Ha yes at least you know you're in the main tourist zone when you start to see those little numbered signs 😂

@@MattWhitingsEurope thanks, it just looked a bit dull, but based on your video we plan to go in September. Also, what drone do you have and do you need to get any permissions to fly it.

It was fairly cloudy all week but hot. Good weather for exploring, I would think that in September the weather will still be warm and bright. In terms of drones, I use a Mavic Air which I've had for over 4 years and is still going strong. There is a helpful page here which notes some of the drone regulations in France... uavcoach.com/drone-laws-in-france/ . Drone rules can be quite hard to understand sometimes, it's always best to do a little bit of research before you travel. I often find that if you're sensible people will leave you alone. Sensible = don't take off or land in busy areas, avoid flying close to people or sensitive buildings/areas, comply with any local signage, don't fly over 400ft (unless you know the country allows it). There are some really good travel (small) drones out there at the moment, I guess I'll end up replacing mine in the next year or two, we'll see. Are you thinking or getting one?
