Saint John of Matha | Stories of Saints
Saint John of Matha was a French priest who co-founded the Trinitarians, a religious order dedicated to redeeming Christian captives from Muslim enslavement. Inspired by a vision, he and Saint Felix of Valois established the order in 1198. The Trinitarians collected alms to ransom captives and vowed to remain in perpetual prayer for their freedom. Saint John emphasized charity and humility, working to alleviate suffering. He died on December 17, 1213, and the Trinitarians continued their mission. Saint John of Matha is commemorated for his dedication to mercy and the liberation of those in captivity.
